johnnyfived··on SafeDollar ‘stablecoin’ drops to $0 following DeFi exploit on Polygon
Nobody that's ripping on tether in here is going to short it lol, they're not that confident in their own words.
johnnyfived··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
It's absolutely crazy to me to see such a technical community not understand or care for finance, investing, and crypto. The sentiment in discussions about crypto border on fearmongering and complete misunderstanding, while I see little to no discussion about investing in general.
johnnyfived··on Software Developer Shortage Is Coming
I'll believe it when I see it
johnnyfived··on Accused murderer wins right to check source code of DNA testing kit
How would a team of independent reviewers even go about examining source code of this scale? How can you possibly find bugs that aren't super obvious?
johnnyfived··on NordVPN disables features when you turn off auto-renew
I agree with this very much, and it's becoming pervasive in other industry spaces too, like streaming services imo.
johnnyfived··on Netflix's Annual Reports (10-Ks) used to be a work of art. What happened?
Seems like an interesting thesis to test. Does internal brand recognition (annual reports that consumers probably won't see) carry any weight? Because consumer brand recognition sure does.
johnnyfived··on Vole.wtf
You have to click the page to even see anything at first? That's neat
johnnyfived··on I Think Beethoven Encoded His Deafness in His Music
I didn't read the article (yet) but this seems like a great summary of it, thanks.
johnnyfived··on All problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone (2014)
Why is it the top article when you can't even read it without a Guardian account?
johnnyfived··on A man who posted himself to Australia (2015)
Need a movie of this guy's life.
johnnyfived··on A tool for recovering passwords from pixelized screenshots
Why is this advertised for passwords only? It should work for any pixelated text. Just because cracking passwords sounds like a cool use case? This project is shooting itself in the foot. Plus it's not like passwords are ever pixelated on-screen, they're generally stylized as asterisks. But sweet leet hacking skills bro
johnnyfived··on Product Marketing for Engineers
I feel like I must not be good at marketing because I find the emojis to be a massive turn-off / distraction from the content
johnnyfived··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
Idk why you were downvoted, this is totally true.
johnnyfived··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I started an open-source project in Python called Restless, to get more experience in both NLP / ML and security. Restless is anti-malware that's "always watching" (every time a file is modified or created, it's automatically sent to the classification pipeline, which uses a hierarchical attention network trained with PE header data).

https://github.com/jddunn/restless

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to speed things up with multiprocessing (Keras doesn't play nicely with that). It's definitely a proof-of-concept project as opposed to something that's a enterprise-level tool (otherwise probably wouldn't write it in Python heh). Mostly I just wanted to make a sick-looking CLI for once.

johnnyfived··on Zoom accidentally sent meeting host transcript of coworkers private chat
Lol. That being a default feature is such a blatant oversight. I can't believe this is the first time i've heard about it
johnnyfived··on I turned my entrepreneur journey into a game
I think this is a super interesting idea. It feels like the natural progression of this would be a set of UI tools to rest on top of JIRA / Trello, or a new task management platform of its own. Basically, a way to create the "gameplay" automatically in the UI
johnnyfived··on Show HN: HNTerm – Browse Hacker News in the Terminal
This is awesome, but not sure why pressing o / O on mac (catalina) doesn't open anything.

A dark mode would definitely be nice, but I think there are some larger UI improvements that can be done. Some basic ones would be better padding and spacing for legibility, and making use of the large empty spaces for additional content. And being able to see the number of comments a post has without clicking on it is a must.

I really like this project and the credits system in place. If you're open to the idea I'd be down to collaborate on some of the frontend / design work. Feel free to message me.

johnnyfived··on Olivia: An open source chatbot build with a neural network in Go
This looks cool but there's not a lot of documentation about how this works or how the bot reads in the training data.

There's the example file here: https://github.com/olivia-ai/olivia/blob/master/res/intents....

But trying every variation of "hi" doesn't return any of the correct responses from the online demo. And Olivia doesn't seem to do text normalization (stripping out punctuation), so saying "Hey." instead of "Hey" or "Hey!" doesn't work.

Currently looking for full-time work or contracting opportunities. I've been coding for over five years and have about three years of experience in the industry professionally. I'm a full-stack developer with strong design skills, though I prefer to focus on the backend, and I have experience with machine learning. I've successfully built multiple complex projects involving natural language processing and computer vision.

johnnyfived··on Show HN: Dimage.js – Never settle for two dimensions
Looks like this could easily be extended into creating UI widgets (for example left / right arrows could rotate it by X degrees).

That's pretty awesome, it opens up some new video game-esque possibilities for web design

johnnyfived··on AI Can Detect Alzheimer’s Disease Six Years Before a Diagnosis
No questions here, but you guys might be interested to see the implementation I took with this, where I also used machine learning for Alzheimer's / dementia diagnosis.

https://github.com/jddunn/dementia-progression-analysis

I was using OASIS's public dataset so I only had ~150 images to work with, instead of ~2000. I used transfer learning from ImageNet's dataset to try and get usable results. I also had super limited testing (15-20 patients), but got ~60% accuracy with ~13% false positive rate.

It could be useful to apply those same transfer learning techniques in your team's model.

johnnyfived··on Show HN: Frame, notetaking app that can answer your questions
At the moment I'm pausing development to focus on other things, but there are a few features needed to really make it useful.

Eventually I'd like to add in building various text corpora by parsing the entire collection of the entries, by selection of entries, and by tags / groupings. Currently, the analysis isn't taking advantage of the recursive data structure of the library.
