johndubchak··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
This is a non-starter from the get go. Water will remain an unsolvable and unsustainable resources regardless of the number of times you pull that wish out of your ass.
johndubchak··on Robert Sapolsky on Depression (2009)
Self-compassion is key in combatting a lot of that negative self talk. Always ask yourself, “Would I talk this way to another person?”

If the answer is “no” then maybe it’s time you stop treating yourself this way and react with more internal kindness.

johndubchak··on Hire-to-fire at Amazon India?
I feel for all of you in this thread that work at Amazon and complain of the poor conditions. There are no shortage of stories that point to a very large problem in that company, for certain. However, I believe the underlying theme, if there is one, is incompetent Management and Leadership.

This is systemic in Technology companies because, to me, the “bean counters” try to run the companies like a basic Manufacturing organization of commodities where line items and people are substitutable things and can be dialed and tweaked at the planning stage.

johndubchak··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
Sadly we do, they're just called drones and they are used to kill people. (Sorry, don't mean to be so dystopian)
johndubchak··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
That "brake for no reason" is a big one. I have a 2015 GMC SUV that has "adaptive cruise control" which I (used to) love.

Since my last service, it seems they've updated it and it's far more sensitive than it used to and seems to break in many situations where it previously did not. What sucks about that is the vehicles behind me are caught off-guard with no obvious signs of the need to break and then the jackass in the GMC SUV slams on his breaks.

johndubchak··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
Twitter is not owned by the Government.
johndubchak··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
Your argument is completely flawed. Twitter has no Civic obligation here. As a Corporation they have a fiduciary responsibility, not to the President or his messaging, but to its broader users.

The fact that there was hate speech by a user, in this case the President, means that Twitter acted in support of its broader platform. It has no obligation to the President or to support his preferred communication platform for hate speech.

johndubchak··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
Twitter also has its Terms of Service and we are all expected to follow those. There have been many that have been banned from Twitter for violent and/or hate speech. What makes the President any different? Why should he get held to a different standard?
johndubchak··on I logged my activities at 15-minute intervals for the whole year
But, to that point, why not just ask Alexa or Siri. I’m certain they have increments at a finer granularity of time than every 15 minutes.
johndubchak··on NSA Exposes Tool Used by Russian Hackers
Apologies, app posted reply to wrong comment.
johndubchak··on NSA Exposes Tool Used by Russian Hackers
It likely has everything to do with our current President’s inability to strike a diplomatic tone in any public discourse.

Please don’t down vote me for an obvious statement, but I do feel the maturity of Political discourse was brought to the school playground level with the election in 2016.

johndubchak··on Gig workers are organising in tech-savvy ways
Let's get 'atter.
johndubchak··on Conversations with a six-year-old on functional programming (2018)
Now that would have been fun to watch. Nicely done!
johndubchak··on Swift: Google’s Bet on Differentiable Programming
I have to agree. Google suffers from a really bad case of ADHD when it comes to creating anything for consumption by outside developers...there is a long list and Dart and GWT are just two that stand out because there are large codebases out there that suffered because of these decisions.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Go has made it this far - I mean, it's a great language, I get it, but Google is fickle when it comes to things like this.

johndubchak··on Göttingen researchers identify existing drug with potential to treat Covid-19
If it's a drug that blocks entry of the virus into human cells, wouldn't it be ineffective on already infected human beings?
johndubchak··on Why I Procrastinate (2019)
Clearly you’ve never struggled to the extent someone has where they finally HAD to reach for help.

I love that a large group of people that are well and don’t have ADHD seem to think they can tell people with ADHD that they’re full of shit and really don’t have it.

johndubchak··on Specification for the D Programming Language
Plus he's no longer involved with D.
johndubchak··on Leaving Pittsburgh because of industrial air pollution
Not at all. He talked to a County official that confirmed the Industrial Pollution, cited an app that has other anecdotal accounts by others in Pittsburgh. His article isn't simply a one line about smelling something.
johndubchak··on Laptop OEMs – make a proper high-end AMD laptop
Very true and. I understand your point. I was trying to suggest that you cou take an AMD motherboard and 3D print some sort of adapter that would adapt its form factor to fit the particular form factor of the existing chassis.

At least as a PoC.

johndubchak··on Laptop OEMs – make a proper high-end AMD laptop
Excellent challenge to the big OEM's. I doubt many will give it a second thought.

What I'd love to see is some of the gifted and talented Makers we've seen in 2019 whip out their dremels and 3D printers and say, "THIS is what I want!"

Couldn't you take a chassis with a high-end screen and fabricate a mount that would accommodate securing an AMD board to the existing mounts of a previous Intel board?

I know I sound naive, but I haven't looked into it yet. It certainly seems possible from a basic engineering standpoint.

EDIT: my horrific grammar

johndubchak··on Spyware in macOS

johndubchak··on Half an operating system: The triumph and tragedy of OS/2 (2013)
Did you ever install Windows NT from the 27 floppies it came on?

Yep, I did.

johndubchak··on The Great American Eye Exam Scam
It was an obvious joke.
johndubchak··on Microsoft's “Love” of Linux
I use Linux exclusively and have since 2003. Also, I don't put any of my work in google drive/docs/GSuite for anything. Google simply has enough of my life, I'm not giving them my business data as well.
johndubchak··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
The primary reason for the single Apple supported AppStore is platform control and by that I mean they can control quality, security, content (remember Steve Jobs said he wasn't making a product for people to stream PORN on) and the type of apps that are permitted. This is a big part of the brand.
johndubchak··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
> Unmoderated free for all app store

I think we should call it Android. Given that, and a lack of a closed ecosystem, is why Android is hacked as much as it is, which is why I would never get rid of my iPhone in favor of an Android device - well, that and the lesser quality hardware, of course. But I think you see my point.

johndubchak··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
> I strongly support some government action to change the current state of affairs with regards to the App Store being the only way to get apps on iOS

A very slippery slope that will not end well for anyone, i.e. Apple, end users, and developers included. This is something I wouldn't advocate for personally and I'm not an Apple fanboi. I don't particularly care for the closed ecosystem but it does create security advantages and Apple is making efforts to protect users more so than greedy Corporate interests when it comes to data and privacy rights.

johndubchak··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
I think this point needs to be highlighted here:

No power = no cell coverage

Landlines are a thing of the past and for the most part that means that people lack the ability to call for help beyond your basic 911 service.

So we’ve effectively tied two pieces of critical infrastructure together and made one dependent upon the other.

That needs to be addressed and resolved.

johndubchak··on Paypal Withdraws from Facebook's Libra Cryptocurrency
Likely because these types of anecdotal accounts get no press coverage.
johndubchak··on Over twenty percent of cable TV bills are bogus fees, study says
Not to challenge your assertion but I really am interested in any additional info you can point me to on this. Thanks.
