johndoe489··on It’s time to give Firefox another chance
I am definitely willing to give it a shot but they need to fix the dev tools.

I'm on 56 atm in Windows 10 / 16 GB RAM / Core i5-3570K and for whatever reason when I press F12 to open up the console it is really sluggish and takes a good whole second to draw itself.

Does 57 solve that?

That said I could see myself just using Chrome for development and FIrefox as main browser. I did the opposite for a while until Firebug was phased out and Chrome Dev Tools became better.

johndoe489··on Consciousness Goes Deeper Than We Think
Let's not even get into "matter" and modern science which already undermines the notion that things are solid...

Let's just get to the point:

If EVERYTHING in the universe, everything in reality is "matter"... then what does "matter" mean anymore?

It may as well be magic. Harry Potter material. No difference. Because this "matter" exists in nothing.

You are in a building, in a city, in a country, in a continent, on planet Earth, in solar system, itself floating in a galaxy, itself floating in the "universe" ... itself floating in ... what?

Nothing.

At which point you call it matter, I could call it "consciousness" (in the author Bernardo Kastrup's meaning then, as a underlying field to everything), some may call it "god". We can also just call it magic. Poof! Here we are.

johndoe489··on Firefox marketshare revisited
I originally switched to Chrome soon after it came out because it was fast.

I still use it today because usability wise it's just better for me.

I can't for the life of me get used to a separate search box. The "omnibar" is simply fantastic. Coupled with turning off "search suggestions" in the Settings, you have a wiki on hand pretty much. Anything you type will match a personal bookmark, or a personal search. Or title of a page visited earlier. This means I don't need to make bookmark in many cases. I can also manage omnibar to give optimal results by making random, useless searches in a private window, which again, is so easy to use in Google Chrome (Ctrl Shift N). And then if a search match is inconvenient for speed or just not useful anymore, just shift+del to remove it.

Firefox completelty lost me when I looked back and it was like version "52" instead of the version 14 or something I was one, just a year or two later. I was like "what the hell??" "WOW what are all these amazings updates they made?" Only to realize barely anything changed at all.

And lately they just lost me completely as a developer. They wanted to integrate the Firebug extension, arguably the most useful aspect of Firefox for developers. I kept using Firefox for firebug for years, while Chrome was my main browser. But since they integrated it, it just performs worse. It's so damn slow and unusable, meanwhile Google console just gets better and better.

johndoe489··on Medium and the Scourge of Persistent Sharing Bars
> When people click a URL and see that it’s a Medium site, their reaction should be “Oh, good, a Medium site — this will be nice to read.”

Is John Gruber that gullible? Most startups out there are led by someone with a "messiah syndrome". They all believe they are going to change the world; but really it's all about money. Find a "niche" and then juice it till it bleeds, they have no other purpose everything else is just PR. Or worse, "rationalization" where the person actually belives all their own bullshit.

Medium's builtin design and clean UI also gives an aura of professionalism to a lot of shitty writing.

Good luck getting a feed that works for you. My feed was continuously assaulted by random feminist rants with clickbait drama titles.

I also love how they write completely meaningless update notes for the iOS app. Eventually they were called out for it on the iOS app when they posted a huge block of morse code in lieu of actual update notes. Then in the following updates, they add some sarcastic message in their iOS update notes mocking their own users who were unhappy with their random/meaningless update notes. What a bunch of losers.

Also their recommendation system sucks. And your feed routinely gets articles "recommended for you" without any reason given (some say "because you follow Such-and-such-Tag, but many don't).

And even putting my rant aside, what do we have to gain from centralizing all expression through a few controlled gates like Facebook or Medium? Who gains from this?
