johanyc··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
The core issue with renewables is reliability. Who cares it's cheap when it doesnt produce energy when I need it
johanyc··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
You need a reliable source for energy. Pumped storage is not. They are mostly good for dealing with the fluctuations of energy supply and demand. It crucially requires water to operate. You can't do much when there's a drought. Also, did some googling. The world’s largest pumped‑hydro storage plant (Fengning, China) stores nearly 40 GWh, delivering 3.6 GW for about 10.8 hours when full. Thats not even a day.

There are really three options for reliable baseload: coal, gas, nuclear. Pick your poison.

johanyc··on iPhone Air
It's also a bit weird that iPhone Air being an Air is more expensive. MacBook Air and iPad Air are the cheaper options in contrast
johanyc··on How RSS beat Microsoft

johanyc··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
No. It means model training is transformative enough to be fair use. They should just be asked to pay them back plus reimbursement/punishment, say pay 10x the price of the pirated books
johanyc··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
If they legally purchased them I dont think why not. IIRC they did borrow from libraries so probably not every book in Google Books
johanyc··on VibeVoice: A Frontier Open-Source Text-to-Speech Model
The Chinese is good. The Mandarin to English example she sounds native. The English to Mandarin sounds good too but he does have an English speaker's accent, which I think is intentional.
johanyc··on Google can keep its Chrome browser but will be barred from exclusive contracts
> The decision said that Apple's deal with Google to be the default search engine was "exclusive" because it established Google as the default out-of-the-box search engine.

johanyc··on US halts work on almost finished wind farm because national security
> The purchase of the 433.3 million Intel shares will be made with funding from the $5.7 billion in unpaid grants from the Biden-era CHIPS Act and $3.2 billion awarded to Intel for the Secure Enclave program, also awarded under Trump's predecessor, Democratic President Joe Biden.

From an article which I lost the link to. Their logic of free is that those grants are approved already, before Trump's intervention US gets nothing, after US gets 10% of Intel.

johanyc··on Orion Browser
Are there other browsers that use tree tabs
johanyc··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
They would. The main reason has always been the location. It’s right at the doorstep of China. It’s the same reason when Russia tried to install missile in Cuba, Americans dont like that. Cuba “crisis” is actually a US centric term. Also on east coast of Taiwan, theres a deep waters, submarines can enter pacific ocean much more stealthily.

Everything else is just bonus to them. Semiconductors, supporting nationalism, you name it.

johanyc··on Cloudflare to introduce pay-per-crawl for AI bots
> the problem is the human cost of a transaction. The mental overhead of deciding whether I want to make a purchase to consume every piece of content […] > When someone on the internet tries to sell you something for a dollar, how often do you really take them up on it?

It depends on how micro they are. Your example of $1 is quite big. It should be cents or even less.

Several examples. When using chatgpt api, do you really worry how much a short q&a session will cost you? Do you stress whether to turn on the light in your room or not (electricity cost is also micro-transaction if you think about it)?

johanyc··on Meta's Llama 3.1 can recall 42 percent of the first Harry Potter book

johanyc··on OpenAI dropped the price of o3 by 80%
> Or is the price drop an attempt to cover up bad news about the outage with news about the price drop?

This makes no sense. No way a global outage will get less coverage than the price drop.

Also the earliest sign of price drop is this tweet 20 hrs ago (https://x.com/OpenAIDevs/status/1932248668469445002), which is earlier than the earliest outage reports 13hrs ago on https://downdetector.com/status/openai/

Could that end up being the standard flavor? I’m a bit annoyed by the differences between flavors
johanyc··on AI video you can watch and interact with, in real-time
Yeah. Why throw away a perfectly fine 3d engine
johanyc··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten better
Anything you wanna the retain the knowledge of. Basic usage is remebering shortcuts, names of people, apis, you name it. More advanced usage is you can break down complex concepts into atomic cards, which helps you remember how things work.
johanyc··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten way better
Every anki card is just a webview. Its very possible to call an api
johanyc··on The cryptography behind passkeys
Yes it’s then two step verification not two factor, a bit less secure but a lot more convenient (age old trade off between the two). The benefit you get compared to having only password is that it’s now time based instead of static.
johanyc··on Judge said Meta illegally used books to build its AI
Everyone knows the training data is stored in some way in the LLM. The point is the use of the copyrighted material is transformative. Remember google books, it literally shows photocopy of pages of books but the court ruled it’s fair use. A simplified explanation is book vs search engine and book vs ai chatbot are very different from each other.
