johanyc··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
Seriously why does Anthropic have so many shenanigans? I once wanted to try claude code coming from codex, but seeing these made me lose any appetite. Plus they are not open to the broader ecosystems like not reading .agents folder etc

> I don't know that I buy that it's "planned obsolescence".

I'm responding to this. It might be worth it for your wife. But if for a lot of people, paying $100 to revive a 6 year old phone is a bad deal, then it's planned obsolescence

johanyc··on Tim Cook's Impeccable Timing
> In short, I think Apple has made a good decision here for short term reasons, but I don’t think it’s a short-term decision: I strongly suspect that Apple, whether it has admitted it to itself or not, has just committed itself to depending on 3rd-parties for AI for the long run.

I'm not so sure it's smart to rely on others for such a major paradigm shift

johanyc··on Not buying another Kindle
There wouldn't be so much backlash if they didn't end downloading ebook support from the website.
johanyc··on OpenAI ad partner now selling ChatGPT ad placements based on “prompt relevance”
Yeah I'm confused too. Google is pretty much doing the same thing as it did when they started monetizing search.
johanyc··on OpenAI ad partner now selling ChatGPT ad placements based on “prompt relevance”
I don't remember them ever saying that. They did say ads will not affect the response, like the ad in Truman show: https://youtu.be/6U4-KZSoe6g
johanyc··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
It's planned obsolescence through price. Your wife paid >50% of the phone's value just to replace the battery. Many people won't think that's worth it. It could have been a $30 user replaceable battery.
johanyc··on Claude Opus 4.7
Weird. I never had that issue when writing code.
johanyc··on AI assistance when contributing to the Linux kernel
Llm can but do they? Is there any evidence that they spit out a piece of code verbatim without being explicitly prompted to do so? NYT v OpenAI for example, NYT intentionally prompted to circumvent OpenAi's guardrail to show NYT articles

You can throw the physical book away or recycle it as paper. Buying them is just to make payments for the pirated books.

johanyc··on The cult of vibe coding is dogfooding run amok
> The question is, will the market care? If software today goes wrong in 3% of cases, and with wide-spread Al use it'll be, say, 7%, will people care? Or will we just keep chugging along, happy with all the new, more featureful, but more faulty software?

This is THE question. I honestly think the majority will gladly take an imperfect app over waiting for a perfect app or perhaps having no app at all. Some devs might be able to stand out with a polished app taking the traditional approach but it takes a lot longer to achieve that and by that point the market may be different, which is a risk

johanyc··on The cult of vibe coding is insane
That has never happened to me. Did you try that a long while ago? I only had that issue with Gemini

On a more fundamental level, I think something is wrong with the American education system and results in so many low information voters who believe any words from their "hero". And fixing education takes decades to even see the result.

They definitely can vote for another Trump-like guy and they have proven it by voting Trump back the second time. Honestly this is crazy to me this can even happen after Jan 6. The Brazilian Trump-like President went to jail, yet Trump returns to the White House. My take is this trust issue takes at least 10 years to recover, most likely more.
