joering2··on Lockheed is now tracking phones and walkie-talkies from space
bingo. it either landed somewhere secretly or crashed. In both situation there was nothing aboard, secret cargo or important politicians, that would justify unveiling of their capabilities to track everything everywhere at all times.
joering2··on Lockheed is now tracking phones and walkie-talkies from space
At the end of this video: "We never forget who we're working for."

If you have to put this disclaimer into your work, we already have a problem.

joering2··on BitTorrent pirates won't receive ISP warnings in NL, but details can be revealed
Sadly it seems to be a pattern with many initially good organizations that go rouge under the pressure of their rapid popularity. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers comes to mind, also if you read on last few years on Spamhouse you will get goosebumps.

joering2··on .US harbors prolific malicious link shortening service
The whole thing about .us needing real name and address of a person and you cannot hide your identity is hilarious. Everytime I had someone spamming me from .us and their data were obviously fake (Registrant name: Tom Cat, Address: Local trash can), the registrar didn't even bother replying to my emails. This has happened with GoDaddy and Dynadot, NameCheap (which is outsourcing all their support to Eastern Europe countries like Russia, so these people are actually looking at your sensitive data) cannot talk for others.
joering2··on Gmail, Yahoo announce new 2024 authentication requirements for bulk senders
if you mean the email marketing software for political campaigns, then yeah sorry you are toasted (your email is) - they resell lists and spam everyone into oblivion. Apparently (as per Can-SPAM Act) politicians are (obviously) exempt from spam practices, so if you are mailing on behalf of politician or his campaign, its all wild west no limits and no rules apply.
joering2··on Gmail, Yahoo announce new 2024 authentication requirements for bulk senders
You joking right? The amount of text messages spam I receive now on Verizon, and some 8 months ago before on T-mobile is staggering.
joering2··on Carl Sagan's Rules for Bullshit-Busting and Critical Thinking
Slight OT, but his suing of Apple was such a douchery move, I will never be able to understand how such brilliant and humble human being would want to entangle himself in such radicicolous petty and frankly baseless lawsuit.
joering2··on Samsung disables customer phones remotely, holds data hostage [video]
Is this news specific to Samsung? Doesn't iPhone have same feature? I mean why would we assume all these devices stolen from California Apple stores should keep working like nothing happen??
joering2··on CS50 Lecture by Mark Zuckerberg in 2005 [video]
What strikes me the most here, is that Mark is extremely knowledgeable, collected, speaks eloquently and seem to understand how business world works. Mind you, this is a 21 year old kid...

By that time, Facebook went through first round with $12 million in funding, but yet just so few people showed up to this...

joering2··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
anyone can point me to a decent list of what exactly these objections were?
joering2··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
Back in 2009 I used to date a girl in Connecticut. She was attending Yale. She was a very nice person but very sloppy. She would always break something or spill something, it was her nature. One day she told me she's running late with school stuff so "meet me at the lab". I came in, got thru security and went to her lab. There she was feeding some 200 mosquitoes sick with malaria, buzzing in a rather small jar, all packed there nicely. This was her assignment for 3 weeks that she had to do twice a day. I could never get over the fact how little security was in place and how, if jar would break, there was absolutely no way to catch them all, in the middle of summer, with all windows wide open. I will never forget this story...
joering2··on Tom Hanks on the rewards and reality of making movies
I wonder if there is a worse way to go? I mean even getting your skull crushed in car accident seems lights out in less than a second. Jumping into a volcano I can imagine you stay alive for some 10 seconds or so before you obviously pass out but not before tasting lava in your stomach.
joering2··on Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (2014)
It will always boggled me why they dropped it on cities of citizens? Why not bomb their biggest military factories, wiping out their capacity and warning - next we coming for your citizens. Wouldn't that be more effective (assuming Japan would not surrender) and more humane ?
joering2··on Wang Computers 'David and Goliath' Commercial (1977) [video]
Wait, but how did you know no records were missing? In other words - how did you know everything WAS printed?

btw: funny you can still buy those hard drives: https://www.amazon.com/Quantum-FB540S-FIREBALL-540MB-SCSI/dp...

joering2··on Suspicious iOS KeePass Client
Just my 2c. I don't trust any cloud keypasses myself, and you shouldn't either. The way I been doing this is having a regular text file with all my passwords that is then encrypted by veracrypt and encrypted file container is then hosted in a pCloud. I used to do it with DropBox until one time their new version stopped doing bit-by-bit comparison, something pCloud does.
joering2··on Tech executive Bob Lee led an underground life
"Hellfire Club of debauched aristocrats"

Where did you read that??

joering2··on Tech executive Bob Lee led an underground life
I thought twice before submitting this, but I believe the article is an interesting one. To me story of Mr. Lee and Mr. Hsieh are a lifetime lessons on how not to allow fame and fortune to drag me down one-way street to the point of fatal self-destruction. I think I personally learnt from their stories and I think this article benefits HN society.
joering2··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
I would like to vouch for Xerox laser printers. Not only they don't identify your printouts with tiny yellow markings/serial number, but also they gladly accept off-market toners, and places like Amazon have many different brands that race to the bottom of price making it easy to try out what works for you. I am on my third Xerox laser printer and couldn't be happier.
joering2··on Revolut CFO quits after auditor BDO warning
Punchline: “IT systems weren’t designed in such a way that would allow for IT or business process controls to be effectively tested throughout the year.”
joering2··on Go with PHP
I think its a great reminder to code with whatever you feel comfortable. For example, my last project I did in Centos/Apache/PHP5/Code Igniter 3.1 with some WASP for protection I did for 12 years and sold few months ago. It checks out against Qualys Server test and ImmuniWeb very well. I sold it for close to $10MM with annual revenues of $1.6MM. The last question the new owner asked me was "what did you program it with?". They mostly want bunch of boring excel spreadsheets seeing where I am, how the sales are sustained, and how do I believe it can grow. On the final day, their IT guy showed up. He looked in silence through 45 minutes of my code's presentation, which is very much mix of OO and not OO, and his only words were "I don't like frameworks if that was me I would start the whole thing from scratch".

So you never know what or whom you gonna get, but the bottom line is if you have sales and revenues and keep tabs on spending, they will come, and they will not care less about your fancy framework or newest code implementations.

TLDR: code in whatever you feel comfortable but always consider security as top priority (not speed) because in production your code's/setup security mistakes can cost you serious legal troubles.

joering2··on Nvidia's Crazy New Neural Engine Is Redefining Realism in Graphics
so no more progress in terms of graphics?
joering2··on Solid, a spec that lets people store their data securely in decentralized Pods
oh boy the HIPAA compliance nightmare this will create. Sadly there is a reason why every doctor office you go to give you poorly xeroxed form and a pencil to fill it out. Wish that would change obviously.
joering2··on Nvidia's Crazy New Neural Engine Is Redefining Realism in Graphics
If you see progress of graphics design in the last 40 years, do you have any idea what would be considered a "progress of graphics design" in the year 2100 ?

I mean seriously, it looks like in the next maybe 5-15 years, GPU will be able to render graphics that even another GPU wouldn't be able to distinguish whether its real or fake.

joering2··on Intel OEM Private Key Leak: A Blow to UEFI Secure Boot Security
If "something truly salacious will turn up", I would bet the source politician will deny it and would want the whole thing to be forgotten as quickly as possible, not to work on a bill against it to pass it bipartisan, because he was an embarrassment case of a leak.

Source: observing last 25 years of US politics.

joering2··on Building telescopes on the Moon could transform astronomy
As my understanding goes, Moon is very big and meteors are very small and aim/crash rarely. You can look at its surface and assume there is activity all the time but because of lack of atmosphere anything that touches the surface leaves footprints for thousands of years. Armstrong footprint is still there.
joering2··on Building telescopes on the Moon could transform astronomy
define "too late" ?
joering2··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
99% of my problems with Windows 10 and 11 ended up the moment I install simplewall. Nowadays they even have option to block future updates. Kudos to Henry for a great piece of software, as I do donate $100 once a year for all the time he saved me on dealing with BS operating system. (totally unrelated and don't know him)

https://www.henrypp.org/product/simplewall

one more tip re W11: when you installing fresh copy, go for offline option (no MS account) - you can find online manual on how to enable it. Your Windows will look totally different and work faster if you go with offline version (MS assumes its a computer without network access)

joering2··on Heroku has been running a second copy of my scheduler instance
But don't do it if its Google. I had been charged for g-suite for domain that expired and someone else picked it up (and parked), long story short after 3 months of back-and-forth with "support" I gave up and started with chargebacks. It was 7 of them, each month one for $6, until one sunny day I woke up and my own gmail account, my youtube TV and Google Play on 2 Android devices all got blocked with messages popping up I never seen before. Also my friend - who used my wi-fi plenty when we worked on a project together, got his gmail frozen with equally weird messages with no answer how to appeal or follow up. Just middle finger and good bye.

edit: and no, they did not stop charging me for youtube TV. I actually had to get a new card number for my credit card for them to stop.

I was screaming the name of person that shot me, thinking if its the last thing I say, at least this son of a bitch will spend life in prison for it.
