joering2··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
American Express is a very special card that typically comes with annual fee that is very much worth it. I would never book any hotels, buy plane tickets or signup in any form of membership with any other card because I got burnt way too many times with Visa and MC is even worse. Also that's why businesses typically do not like AE because how easy it is to dispute the charge.

But to add - I discourage you from using chargeback as a feature to stop future charges. Most banks will report it to your credit bureau - you won't see it in form of points being withheld BUT it might be adverse for you when you try to get a loan, etc. My mother disputed way too many things (memory troubles at her age) and they did not renew her CC after expiration date and MasterCard told her she is not eligible for card with her excessive CB ratio.

joering2··on Blockbuster Video VHS insert template
As funny as it seems, I am glad nobody thought about it as a true way to prevent cross-zoning like with ridiculous unhelpful initial DVD discs/players Zoning where you could only change your zone 5 times which btw wish someone sue player makers for that.

Its just a matter of reversing the tape content, but I could imagine zoning south versus north hemi, so Australia VHS would not work in Europe :) I mean it would work but you would watch in reverse :)

joering2··on Does generative AI facilitate investor trading? Evidence from ChatGPT outages
I think lately results of chat went downhill. I got used to asking "are you sure about that" after each chat answer to my question, and to most of the time the answer is "you are right, here is how I was wrong".
joering2··on The Typeset of Wall·E (2018)
"A Wuppertal Schwebebahn monorail train arrives at the Werther Brücke station in Wuppertal, 1913."

Somewhat off topic, but stuff like this always leads me back to this reconstructed video from 1902. It feels like you almost there. I cannot fantom all these people walking peacefully now are dead, and they never heard of silicon circuit, let alone internet or an iPad. Worth watching once or twice a year it always makes me appreciate my life just few inches more...

After the way they treated her, I wouldn't accept it.

joering2··on Sending emails to my three-year-old
The closed social network for just my family with simply ability to share pics of my kid and are stored encrypted remains on my list... I thought when I have kid this will motivate me, now I am so busy with my son that I don't have the time to program it. Anyone can recommend any simple app that will allow me to share pics in very small group of people and have robust control over who sees what etc?
joering2··on Is Target selling its excess inventory on eBay and Poshmark?
What? she was fixing strollers?? ask her to STOP immediately and pray none of the customers will sue if the stroller breaks and child is hurt in the process. Your little sister has no idea in what kind of trouble she might be and could be criminally liable and state attorneys do not play nice when it comes to neglect of children wellbeing. Unsure which state this is in, but most have 5 years statue, so if she stops selling today she should be in clear by May 30, 2029. Please pray for her!
joering2··on Retired detective: We got it wrong in Robert Roberson's death penalty case
If that was his real stance, and someone who does believe in up and down, I think he is burning in hell for being in position of power to stop, but went on to kill innocent people.

Also in subject of death row, recently watched rather good movie based on true events: Trial by Fire. Interesting how that case was based on pseudo-science and even thought the governor knew he still let Cameron to be executed.

joering2··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
less than quarter mil number, that's very very early on! mine is over 3.8 million, and I created it relatively early on considering I was living in Europe :)

I think I remember my number because back then when you had to reinstall software or put it on new machine you always went by your number, instead of your email or username. That's why I think I still remember it :)

joering2··on Phone conversations with law enforcement can be recorded without their consent
Honestly I always take "This call may be recorded" as two way consent :) one time someone was referring to person with hard to pronounce name and I said "that's fine I will play it back". Person responded: "wait, are you recording? I didn't give you my consent". To which I said yes you did, when I called your line answered with announcement that this call can be recorded. He wasn't too happy :)

in the real real far future you don't need his head, but maybe a single hair or a bone? Assuming every DNA cell keeps all memories or perhaps like a chicken running with a cutoff head maybe if his hands to be reconstructed, given enough time over a keyboard he would finally "twich" a password? Just thinking out loud...
joering2··on Tell HN: GoDaddy Stole My Domain
I could ignore the Eastern European staff members even though the majority of clientele is in the USA but how the heck I see the same UI issues, bugs, weird empty "warning" popups and glitches that I seen some 12 years ago today, that just boggles my mind.
joering2··on Tell HN: GoDaddy Stole My Domain
No it is not. As someone who has been using basically every registrar out there, I can tell you DynaDot has one of best prices (at least first year) but just about year ago they had nasty problem with their DNS servers (all 3 !) and all my sites with domains hosted there were down, 100% in the dark. Ultimately they fixed it and apologized but going through their forum you could see this was constantly happening and many people were upset. I never heard of domain registrar all 3 DNS servers going down for close to 10 hours straight. Big red flag in year 2023.

I moved out to what I consider being extremely stable and easy to chat for help registrar located with staff in USA (contrary to namecheap) that is NameSilo. They are usually $1 more expensive but who cares? I still register with DynaDot sometimes when I see real good deal price wise but if I want to use the domain for live project I transfer it to NameSilo.

joering2··on Tell HN: Hacker News now supports IPv6
I'd even go out of my way and say that undecillion of IP addresses ought to be enough for anybody.
joering2··on Winding down Google Sync and Less Secure Apps support
That was a turn off for me personally. While I think more expensive per user (but free for up to 150 emails per day without your own domain name), ProtonMail has "Proton Bridge" that works wonderfully for me on Windows 7/11. It gives you what the name suggest, its a bridge between your cloud encrypted emails and sets up local SMTP that you can connect any program to (I have Thunderbird and Outlook). Haven't had any issues at all.

joering2··on NASA says SpaceX’s next Starship flight could test refueling tech
So your assumption is everyone going to Moon or Mars is a saint. And if so - who set the standard? Pope? President? And then what do we do if they become not-so-saint? Drag them back to Earth?

The whole idea that some sort of better type humans will travel to another planet is frankly ridiculous. We don't learn from our own mistakes - see WW1, WW2, current state of affairs. If anything, we would most likely destroy Mars and Moon much faster than how we wronged Planet Earth.

joering2··on What We Watched: A Netflix engagement report
Its interesting to think if only people not waste their time, how productive they would be. Then you realize how hard it is to get successful in life in terms of work, how every single idea and product / service has so many competitors, and you become glad that so many people don't do anything but waste their time :)
joering2··on Submarine Cable Map 2023
Came here to say the same. And clicking on the globe does not stop it. Then trying to zoom and you can't but the globe image is too blurry/low res to read what's on it. Don't get me even started on scrolling...
joering2··on Okta says hackers stole data for all customer support users

joering2··on Okta says hackers stole data for all customer support users
Its politics. Good luck trying to convince someone in larg corp they don't need Oracle with other open source databases out there. There is just too many people in line on both sides that job and salary and bonuses depends on the deals to continue, no matter how terrible, expensive, or useless they are.

joering2··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
It is somewhat different. AirBnB founder Nathan Blecharczyk was not shopping around, but rather at some point he was the largest spammer in USA, where even FBI was interested in his dealings. Interestingly, the 3 articles I was able to find on this subject some 5 years ago (and posted to HN at some point) from major news outlets, are all gone now.

I think hurting your own business versus being a scumbag scammer will get you much different treatment, even from PG.
