joering2··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
How about not going there at all for whatever reason, under any circumstances. And there are bigger issues at stake, no amount of drugs "made in Venezuela" inhaled by Americans can kill them as much as one North Korean Nuke.

I'm surprised no lesson the US learnt from similar overthrows in the past, but again this is Trump. The country can get so unstable that by the time Marco start giving out "legitimate" orders, there will be 30 different groups fighting and killing each other. True unchecked anarchy. So what's then? Boots on ground. Are we still in the spirit of sacrificing 150,000 American soldiers in the name of freedom, like we did in Iraq? When we kicked out Russians from Middle East we were not aware they kept islam jihadists at bay, then Al Quaida came to live and we all now how it ended.

joering2··on A brief history of Times New Roman
After filing multiple motions and appeals in my divorce case, I fell in love with Bookman Old Style font. All my docs written now that require my signature, are all done in it. I agree with others saying to ditch Times New Roman, give a try to Bookman Old Style.
joering2··on The government has no plan for America’s 300 billion pennies
Supposedly it cost gov 4 cents to mint 1. Does it have to be done with zinc tho? Why not plastic or some cheap material? Although you may be able to 3D print a penny at home (just like it being made from zinc can actually stop someone), but just like with a real one, its not like you will show up at your local bank with $1 million dollar worth to deposit.
joering2··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
Being a layer or a doctor means being a human being. ChatGPT is neither. Also unsure how you would envision penalties - do you think Altman should be jailed because GPT gave me a link to Nexus ?

I did not find any rules or procedures with 4 DCA forbidding usage of AI.

joering2··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
I haven't mentioned anything about hallucinations. ChatGPT was solid on writing underlying logic, but to find caselaw I used Vincent AI (offers 2 weeks free, then $350 per month - still cheaper than cheapest appellant lawyer and I was managed to fit my response in 10 days).

That's fine, so Google sidestep it and ChatGPT did not. What point are you trying to make?

Sure I skip AI entirely, when can we meet so you hand me $35,000 check for attorney fees.

joering2··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
No matter how I tried, Google AI did not want to help me write appeal brief response to ex-wife lunatic 7-point argument that 3 appellant lawyers quoted between $18,000 and $35,000. The last 3 decades of Google's scars and bruises of never-ending lawsuits and consequences of paying out billions in fines and fees, felt like reasonable hesitation on Google part, comparing to new-kid-on-the-block ChatGPT who did not hesitate and did pretty decent job (ex lost her appeal).
joering2··on The history of Casio watches
Memories. I had first Casio sometime in 1980s at age 8 or so, and it was solar fueled. I put it under desk lamp which was probably 100W back then to charge it faster, I guess, and then the plastic deformed. Little I knew putting it into a refrigerator will not make it back to be nice and square. 8 year old. And there has been so many styles, every year to release new catalog and for so many region/countries there are different styles. I can imagine there is one person out there, a real boss-level-type dude, who has a basketball-size room with all brand new Casio watches, each one style, still unopened.
joering2··on Meta projected 10% of 2024 revenue came from scams
This just came out yesterday but what the hell man! its like only keeping your top cocaine sellers in hope less of your people on the streets, less possibility to get caught. Everyone else out.

How the heck are they not being raided and at least temporarily shut down at this exact moment? No wonder Trump is best friend of Mark as of recently... it really does scream "guilty".

joering2··on Boring Company cited for almost 800 environmental violations in Las Vegas
This is actually what we would love to have as Gov Department - DORO: Department Of Regulations Overview - a body that would asses each regulation and cut of all these that are unnecessary and were clearly created by politicians/lobbyist/lawmakers bribed by big corp. to "lawfully" eliminate competition.
joering2··on OpenAI's H1 2025: $4.3B in income, $13.5B in loss
Italian advertising is weird in general. Month ago leaving Venice we pulled over on a gas station and I started just going thru pages on some magazine. At some point I see advertising on what looks like old fashioned shoes - and owner of the company holding his son with sign "from generation to generation". Only thing - the ~3 year old boy is completely naked wearing only shoes with his little pee pee sticking out. It shocked me and unsure if it was just my American domestication or there was really something wrong with it. I took a picture and wanted to send it to my friends in USA to show them how Italian advertising looks like, before getting sweats that if I were caught with that picture in the US, I would get in some deep trouble. I quickly deleted it, just in case. Crazy story..
joering2··on Building the heap: racking 30 petabytes of hard drives for pretraining
Their rate will probably be higher since they are utilizing used drives. From the spec:

2,400 drives. Mostly 12TB used enterprise drives (3/4 SATA, 1/4 SAS). The JBOD DS4246s work for either.

joering2··on Windows 10 resists its end: usage share climbs while Windows 11's falls
Obscure github scripts?

Simplewall (Henry++) has entered the room.

joering2··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
As a medicore programmer, other than AI I would imagine the rest of the list would take 2 weeks to program and implement.
joering2··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
> Remember that he tried to back out of the deal, arguing that he had been lied to in regards to the number of bots and actual users.

True but since he never provided any hard numbers, especially after totally owning the thing, makes this point moot.

joering2··on Ask HN: Startup getting spammed with PayPal disputes, what should we do?
I can promise you that's not a better solution. I witnessed a card testers smarter than Stripe tech and Stripe shutting down account that had literally 0% chargeback ratio and doing over $10MM in sales monthly. Still to them that was peanuts. They will help you initially and customer support is pretty fast at figuring things out, but in no shape of form will they say "gee, we see you are not the bad guy and someone else is doing that so your account is good to continue abusing our merchant accounts". They. Will. Shut. You. Down. Because they care about their rates of CB more than about your business. Just 2c, based on experience.
joering2··on Trying to teach in the age of the AI homework machine
The AI tools should be helping more than hurting. But take my example: I am in 3 year long litigation with soon to be ex-wife, she recently fired her attorneys and for 2 weeks used chatGPT to write very well worded, very strong and very logically appealing motions practically almost destroying my attorney on multiple occasions and he had to work overtime costing me extra $80,000 in litigation costs. And finally once we got in front of the judge, the ex could not combine two logical sentences together. The paper can defend itself on its face but it also turned out that not a single citation she cited had anything to do with the case at hand, which chatGPT is known for in legal circles. She admit using the tool and only got a verbal reprimand. The judge told majority of that "work" was legal and she cannot stop her from exercising her first amendment right, be it written by AI she had to form questions, edit responses, etc. And I wasn't able to recover a single dime since on its face her motions did make sense, although judge denied majority of her ridiculous pleadings.

Its really frightening! Its like handling over the smartest brain possible to someone who is dumb, but also giving them very simple GUI that they actually can operate and ask good enough questions/prompts to get smart answers. Once the public at large figure this one out, I can only imagine courts being flooded with all kinds of absurd pleadings. Being the judge in the near future will most likely be the least wanted job.

joering2··on Alphabet's share price plunges on traffic drop testimony
I must admit, since discovering ChatGPT and Grok, I don't recall the last time I used Google. Could be 2-3 months... if ChatGPT doesn't have it then Grok will answer. This is shocking even to me personally realizing how much trouble Google is in right now...
joering2··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
Sadly I agree with unrecoverable. Not only China is not stupid and is not waiting around, but also this idea that American people under democratic system can withstand longer oppression than a hard core regime that makes people missing every day, is astonishing. We will have Americans riot on the streets, meanwhile Chinese people will just get a tad smaller rice bowls. And then you have Canada, India and most significant countries there that this Administration continues to offend. Canada is going thru rounds of serious talks to take up large amounts of goods produced in China, so is India. We might be at the point that if/when a new Administration comes and is ready to restart talks, China may say "sorry we don't have anymore hands/factories to produce goods and we are very happy with what we sale to Canada/China/[insert any country name that is not US]".

Side note, how is bringing back manufacturing really what American people want? Do you want to live next to a huge factory polluting air and creating unbearable noise? You think you children can or want to work as hard as Chinese folks doing repetitive tasks in stinky inhumane factories? At what rate? $2 per day? The reason it all got pushed outside of USA is exactly because the level of lifestyle Americans wanted and like. Now apparently we are being told by this Administration that "having cheap goods is not American dream."

God help us all!

joering2··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
There is many "not sexy" projects that many people indeed find interesting and worth watching. And OP did not want to watch ANY youtube video.. he wanted to watch your work, as I do to since these other youtubers (AFAIK) are not on HN :)
joering2··on Trump's Tariffs Wipe Out over $6T on Wall Street in Epic Two-Day Rout
You said the most important part. Trump and Co believes that a car or semi factories grow overnight like mushrooms in the forest. If a CEO of a semiconductor company would decide to start building a billion dollar plant in the USA, which would take 6-8 years to built, knowing that new President from the other much different party might take over in less than 4 years, that CEO would probably endup being sued by shareholders for jeopardizing the company's bottom line.

Noone in their right mind will start building factories in USA because of temporary tariffs that all might go away with an executive order and a stroke of a pen comes January 2029.

joering2··on Losing a 5-year-long Illinois FOIA lawsuit for database schemas
> Please note that in late 2013, the City of Chicago launched a publically available Data

did they really say "publically" in their response? :)

joering2··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
I spent quite some time on farms and while chickens are adorable, the amount of poop you have to deal with is going to be a killer to most people. So in the spirit of HN, and if this upward trend of eggs' price continues, I have 2 business ideas:

- Uber for eggs. One household in the hood does all the chicken chores and sale eggs very locally to only some small ZIP code. Of course considering cost on a small home scale, eggs would be most likely at 15% price of shelf ones. Also bigger farmer could not just come and order thousands at such low price because the owner would not have capacity.

- diapers for chicks. If you can invent cheap diaper for chickens then 90% of chicks pollution is gone. you still have to deal with food, water, etc, BUT the major turn off will always be amount of excrement they produce.

Considering the price of eggs today, if nothing gets changed and flus will prevail, these are a billion dollar ideas :)

Edit: unless of course someone is doing that already :) I haven't checked.

joering2··on Kevin Mitnik FOIA Final
Steve's Job SSN is 549-94-3295. How can this release harm a dead person?
joering2··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
please share if there is something you can show to public.
joering2··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
This is obviously incorrect. Actually pardon means the charges filed has been voided, hence anything happening afterwards has had no merits and court decisions made are now rendered moot. For example, Roger Stone was charged and found guilty of multiple crimes and Trump pardoned him; he still brandish guns and was "proudly voting Trump" in 2024 in state of Florida. Getting pardon is literally like it never happened in the first place.
joering2··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline

joering2··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
I wonder what would happened if you willingly keep providing a wrong password. The possibility of your device malfunctioning IS and always will be > 0.

Can the judge really throw you, and re-throw you multiple times to jail because the password you keep providing did not work?

joering2··on Uncut Currency
Interesting to see US Mint site on the HN. Few interesting facts from someone who is collecting US currency for 20 years:

- these are great gift items for your rich friends or businessmen. The $1 sheet does come with only slight overcharge and everyone I gifted ended up hanging it in their office wall. Its a great conversation starter because majority of people do not know US dollars are produced in sheets nor that civilians can easily and legally purchase them off the US mint site.

- on the downside I almost missed my international flight because TSA agent could not comprehend that this is not fake home-printed sheet of $100. The new $100s have the famous security strip engraved and I would imagine putting large number thru airport security machine will tip it as attempt to smuggle large amount of US currency (you supposed to report anything over $10,000 in cash (whichever currency) when you enter or leave US border). So the TSA got warning on their screen and his eyes almost popped out when he unroll a sheet of 16 x $100 bills on one sheet of paper. Other travelers had fun seeing it too. Its only that his supervisor let me through quickly because he said a month ago there was some money summit in NYC and he got plenty of people going back and forth with these sheets.

- I think everyone should order a single $1 sheet to have on their wall as it is a great conversation starter.

joering2··on The Crime Messenger
Facebook certainly likes to at least have sense to know what you are conversating about. Sometime in 2016 we and my buddy abroad got our accounts frozen "due to security reasons" at exact same time; what we were doing is having fun with FB Messenger and sending each other PGP-encrypted messages. This least about 2 months and my buddy is Egyptian, so I am pretty sure at some point FB said "we don't know what they chat about and enough is enough". I got my account recovered after multiple layers of verification including video-call to hold up my ID done by third-party ... my friend never gotten his reinstated.
joering2··on Cybertruck's Many Recalls
Had same question so parked next to a black one. It was wrap. Since then I seen green, pink and blue cybertrucks; all wraps with companies advertising. All of sudden majority I see are small business owners wrap-advertising. Rarely see the steel one. This is for Miami FL.
