joemaller1··on Rising temperatures erode human sleep globally
Can we also talk about light pollution? Birds aren’t sleeping either.
joemaller1··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
I’ve been through a few significant power outages in NYC. The gas worked fine, we just lit the stove with a match. For hurricane Sandy, I made a huge pot of soup with most of what would spoil in the refrigerator, then boiled it every couple hours for the next several days. Family was fed, food wasn’t wasted.

A bigger problem in NYC is electric water pumps: When the power goes out, the water stops when the water tower on the roof empties. This is mostly for buildings over 5-6 stories, older buildings were somewhat height-capped by municipal water pressure. No water means no toilets. Again, people don’t seem to know that toilets use gravity, a bucket will flush them. Big storm coming? Fill the bathtubs with water.

joemaller1··on The "five whys" productivity technique
There are seven trees.
joemaller1··on 2049 and the dreams of Philip K. Dick
That... was far better than I was expecting and somewhat redemptive of BR'49. Worth the long read.
joemaller1··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
RIP Neutral Response.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ussCHoQttyQ

A brilliant example of very-large-scale spontaneous cooperation: 12 years and 10.4M views, and the like/dislike ratio has been at equilibrium the whole time.

joemaller1··on Norfolk sand: Has a colossal experiment worked?
Measuring success against geologic forces in a timeframe of single-digit years is incredibly foolish.
joemaller1··on Will Cloudflare R2 Win Customers from Amazon S3?
Yes. The instant I get access.

This plus CloudFlare Workers might replace quite a few AWS S3/Lambda projects.

joemaller1··on Google's Secret Initiative – “Project Hug”
Thread links no longer work on mobile web Twitter without an account.
joemaller1··on The Babylonians used Pythagorean ideas long before Pythagoras
An uncomfortably large percentage of our population doesn’t understand the theorem, no matter what it’s called. But sure, let’s quibble about the name.
joemaller1··on Ask HN: You have one shot to redesign the Internet – what do you change?
The internet actually works really well. Its problems are human.
joemaller1··on Ask HN: 90s programmers, what did you expect the future of tech to look like?
I did not expect the internet would become so ephemeral.
joemaller1··on Amazon is blocking Google’s FLoC
> across what’s left of the open web.

Gut punch

joemaller1··on Tips for Interviewing over Zoom
Good advice for zoom in general, but I find virtual backgrounds horribly distracting. Besides often messing up the shape of someone’s head, they imply the subject is hiding something.

Definitely clean up and stage your environment. With so many actual human clues removed from equation, the stuff behind you says a lot.

joemaller1··on Surround Sound in Headphones
darn it, just tell me what to buy.
joemaller1··on ‘Eliminate Every Superfluous Word’
Streaming on PBS, Monday April 5. I have no idea how to watch PBS on a TV anymore.
joemaller1··on 68k.news: A Netscape 1.1 makeover of Google News
Wish the width was a little narrower, or fluid. Reading on a phone is kind of small.
joemaller1··on Okta to Acquire Auth0 for $6.5B
Cloned the jwt.io site, just in case.
joemaller1··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
Feels like they're setting up for an acquisition.
joemaller1··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
This is a phenomenal product, I've been using an old iPhone 6s and the quality is very good.

The license subscription is more than I'd prefer to pay, but considering every passable webcam has been sold out since April, it's much cheaper than some disposable USB webcam with horrible quality.

joemaller1··on Some U.S. Colleges Cut Tuition
I know of a number of first-year college students who are taking the next semester off. That's on top of many more already already taking a gap year. Dorms are like prisons, and virtual classes are not worth the money.
joemaller1··on Show HN: Interactive Rubik's Cube with sub-puzzles for solution steps
I was thrown off by the color scheme as well. Opposing sides are red/orange, green/blue and yellow/white. Ultimately the colors are meaningless, but it feels off, similar to how opposing sides of dice always add to the same number.
joemaller1··on Apple Silicon M1 Chips and Docker
If Docker can run on Raspberry Pi's ARM chips, it can run on Mac ARM chips. I expect we'll see this working very soon after the new Macs start to arrive.
joemaller1··on My Resignation from the Intercept
> These are the raging battles over free expression and the right of dissent raging within every major cultural, political and journalistic institution. That’s the crisis that journalism, and more broadly values of liberalism, faces. Our discourse is becoming increasingly intolerant of dissenting views, and our culture is demanding more and more submission to prevailing orthodoxies imposed by self-anointed monopolists of Truth and Righteousness, backed up by armies of online enforcement mobs.
joemaller1··on Node.js 15.0

joemaller1··on Microsoft 365 Outage
Seems to be Azure-related, all sorts of stuff is not accessible right now.
joemaller1··on Run PHP in the browser through Babel
Anyone run WordPress through this yet?
joemaller1··on New iPad Pro with LiDAR Scanner and trackpad support
was going to say, that'll be some trick
joemaller1··on A two-person startup already uses twenty-eight other tools
Remember when web pages linked to other web pages?
joemaller1··on Where are all the animated SVGs?
Comment from the post:

> To think that 24 years ago we had streaming vector animation with synchronized sound that could do decent fps on a crappy computer and download over the phone line at 28Kbps AND an IDE that could make those animations with ease. Yes, I'm talking about flash. It's mindblowing that today with HTML+JS+SVG+CSS we're struggling to create stuff that was dead easy back then.
