The appletv Flickr screensaver is really very nice. That might do the trick.

Yes, my wife's done this for almost a decade. She gets paid well, provides professional service, and works under an LLC

What else would you call it, if not professional?

That said, I have to harass her about backups.

joelhooks··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School
My son was in a great group this past year that was a Shakespeare deep dive. They gave a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the end of the year. It was a great experience.

we haven't had much luck with the more religious groups (as heathens). The mormons are actually really cool, so I agree, cross the fence. It doesn't always work out, but it is worth the effort because we live in a broad world and everybody has something to offer.

We have a great homeschool group that provides a lot of high quality social time combined with sports and other activities. We also participate in a co-op that is a lot of fun and provides some variety. The oldest is in a leadership program that has benefited him greatly.

We are very loose curriculum wise and follow a self-education approach[1] loosely. The Robinson Curriculum is awesome, and I highly recommend it.

My oldest is 15 and the decision is his to make. There are lots of avenues for social development and we talk about it as a family. He chose not to this year. I've offered both public and private options.

At least one of my three boys would have an incredibly hard time with this. He's definitely "aspie" in a lot of respects.

The decision to home educate our 4 children is hands down the best decision we've ever made. Highly recommend it, if you are able to pull it off logistically. Very rewarding experience so far.

The emails are gold, and go out to 7000 people. I won't do it again put of respect for his request, but I guarantee every Friday will feature the web version of his email on the front page.

Personally, this is the stuff I want to see on HN. Educational content that helps me towards my own goals as a developer and content producer.

joelhooks··on Productizing A Freelancing / Consulting Business
Sorry, I will do so. I just really enjoy the content, and it seemed relevant to this groups interests.

Yesterday I was actually looking forward to your email ahead of time ;)

We use Chef for distributed team. They download a very basic VM, run Chef, and are off to the races in minutes. When updates or config changes, they update from VCS and everything is configured and good to go. This is especially awesome for more UI focused devs that aren't as comfortable with Unixy tools.

I worked at a high end law firm for a couple of years and there was a paralegal that was routinely abused by her boss. She got fed up after seeing an email thread and took it to the managing partner. The managing partner was a really great guy, and his solution was to let her print all of the offending attorney relevant email threads and distribute them to the entire office. It was righteous. It surprised the attorney, as she had her emails published and she was fired on the same day.

John Taylor Gatto[1] was a huge early influence for me. You are right about the religious saturation in the homeschool world. They paved the way (legally), so I respect that, but there is a lot more opportunity in home education outside of religious exclusion.

The time we get together is amazing, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love the fact that they can spend a Thursday building Lego and making stop motion animations, and it is an acceptable educational activity.

They get a lot of social time too. People generally worry about that, but it hasn't been an issue.

I've come to a similar conclusion. We homeschool, and my oldest is 15. "How to teach my kid to program" is the wrong question. My oldest is barely interested. He's getting to the point where it might be good as job skill, and he knows that, but he's not hacking his nights away. Could care less. My middle son however is 11 and is constantly hacking at stuff. Setting up his friends' minecraft servers. Asking me questions like "what is Lua" because he wants to mod roblox. Opening the chrome dev tools and changing shit on pages for hours. lol

They have all the opportunity they could want. They will all "graduate" with deeper than average computer science knowledge, but that urge to hack isn't something that can be taught.

joelhooks··on Lessons Learned: A Year with a Large AngularJS Project
I added it based on a comment. Yeoman is interesting because it has "rails like" generators. This can be nice on a project of size, for consistency and saving time.

Yeoman uses Grunt, which is nice for building, watching, and packaging.

Not strictly needed, but very useful and recommended.

I haven't written a for loop in 6 months. Underscore is the shit.
joelhooks··on Lessons Learned: A Year with a Large AngularJS Project
I've used Jade and Angular in the past. Angular allows you to change the bracket notation to something custom, which helps avoid conflicts.

For the type of app I've been working on, the all-or-nothing hasn't been a real hindrance, but Angular is definitely a Framework and not so much a modular toolkit (like Backbone, for instance, which I would say is generally a better choice if you want to build something "custom")

joelhooks··on Lessons Learned: A Year with a Large AngularJS Project
The angular internals is another great resource for directives, as the framework itself uses them heavily.

I haven't actually taken the time to get the metrics, but probably in the neighborhood of 50k.

our app is... big. It runs great on "modern" devices and browsers, and we haven't had any severe memory issues. We profile on a semi-regular basis.
joelhooks··on Lessons Learned: A Year with a Large AngularJS Project
really good points. We were "promise shy" and I'm now completely sold and in love with them.

We actually use a Command implementation that I ported, which has been really handy for leaning up the controllers, plus they aren't stateful so they are always available. https://github.com/joelhooks/js-command-center.

This is rad. Thank you. It is being added to our home education curriculum. I think the kids will get a lot out of it "turtle graphics" style.
