joelhooks··on Prototype ergonomic mechanical keyboards
I adore the topre keys and small footprint of my HHKB.
joelhooks··on What I’ve learned in 5 years of running a SaaS
There is a distinct difference between internal milestones/targets and publicly announcing "feature X will be ready by xx/xx/xxxx!"
joelhooks··on What I’ve learned in 5 years of running a SaaS
An interesting tactic that I see repeated by successful bootstrapped internet businesses is to really dig into the pain of their current audience. You've got this group of thousands that have proven to pay for things on the internet. You are in a position of trust, since you provide them value already.

What are their other pain points?

That is the question I'd be studying them to answer.

joelhooks··on Tekpub Has Been Acquired
They are obviously trying to correct for this by bringing in Rob and Geoffrey via acquisition, no. Two high production value video training sites bought in as many months.

You definitely should though. The more the merrier :)

joelhooks··on How to Build a Subscription Service on Rails: A Noob's Guide
That's awesome Daniel. I really appreciate what you are doing. When things wind down with my current egghead push, I might see how I can pitch in to help.

This is true, to some extent. You're directly charging for materials related to the code. I gave you 2x as much $$ as I did Giles. I'm glad to do it, but his stated purpose wasn't to improve RailsApp, it was to take common general issues and refactor them. RailsApp just happened to be a convenient example.

Hopefully some of the hundreds of smart developers that can contribute will apply some of the code review to RailsApp.

It gets into murky waters though.

I'm assuming contributors don't get a cut of the monthly subscriptions to RailsApp Pro.

I think what you're doing is awesome, and love the approach you've taken.

I gave recurly a long look. It has some great features (specifically the dunning). In the end, working with Stripe was cheaper and less hassle, though I've just pushed out the dunning hassle.

Thanks for the sample app, I'm looking forward to seeing what you've done.

joelhooks··on uTorrent tricking users into changing default browser settings?
I use Flexget and Transmission. Wondeful combo. Keeps Plex well fed :>
joelhooks··on Authority Case Studies: $30k in sales from first-time authors
I used a bit of the RailsApp when I was learning Rails to build a subscription site. Luckily I met Pete and was able to use his book when I actually got to the subscription impl. I KNOW my app as a whole is shitty, so I just bought yours to see how I can unfuck ^^

Your books are always fun. Looking forward to it!

joelhooks··on Authority Case Studies: $30k in sales from first-time authors
I get NEGATIVE royalty statements from Manning. My experience with OReilly had been much better, but I'll never publish through a traditional publisher again.
joelhooks··on Authority Case Studies: $30k in sales from first-time authors
I've had a significantly different experience, and have directly benefited professionally from Nathan's books, a couple in the list, and several others of this nature.
joelhooks··on Why I Built an AngularJS Training Site on Rails
http://www.bennadel.com/coldfusion/privacy-policy-generator.... is a generator
joelhooks··on Why I Built an AngularJS Training Site on Rails
There are no AngularJS pieces to the site (outside of the videos themselves, which are almost strictly geared towards Angular)
joelhooks··on Why I Built an AngularJS Training Site on Rails
This is the approach I'm taking for the Admin, actually. Haven't started yet, but really looking forward to it.
joelhooks··on Why I Built an AngularJS Training Site on Rails
The biggest hurdle was using Rails 4 and Bootstrap 3 because the gems I was trying to use weren't quite there yet.

I'd argue that it is production quality ;)

There are no tests, which makes me feel bad about myself, and in the future I'd prefer to TDD the whole thing, but in terms of cognitive load up front it was too much to take in.

joelhooks··on Mirra 2
Thanks again. Got the part yesterday and installed it with ease. This chair has another 12 years in it for sure :)
joelhooks··on Mirra 2
Nice, ordered the gas cylinder replacement part. Looks super easy.

Thanks!

joelhooks··on The science of reconstructing a freak accident
It would be a lot cooler if this article actually discussed the science of accident reconstruction. I spent 10 years as a forensic animator and was looking forward to a stroll down memory lane. Instead I get a brief dismissal of the "mind-numbing series of tests"
joelhooks··on Mirra 2
They are comfortable and extremely high quality. Not to mention the aesthetics. Cheap chairs break, and even worse they break "slowly" with weird tilts and whatnot that creep in slowly.

My first Aeron lasted 12 years of my use. The hydraulics finally died, but my son uses it now ^^

joelhooks··on Mirra 2
I sit on the Embody too, man is it a choice ride. Wife has a Mira and loves it. I had an Aeron for a dozen years prior, and they are OK, but the Mirra is more comfortable. The new one looks fantastic.
joelhooks··on Natural born programmers
I've been reading Papert's Mindstorms[1], which is a discussion on math education and the genesis of LOGO. If this topic interests you, I highly recommend the book.

joelhooks··on Spaced repetition for study and learning
The Power of Habit and http://tinyhabits.com/ are both great.
joelhooks··on Tarsnap logo contest
$400, or most of my budget. Still have same tired logo that I "designed" 8 years ago.
joelhooks··on Tarsnap logo contest
I wasted money this year on a designer, who had work we liked, but couldn't come up with anything we liked for our brand. Wish I had crowd sourced it.
joelhooks··on Tarsnap logo contest
Paying a single designer directly can be really frustrating. $500 only buys you so many variations, and if none of them hit the mark, you are SOL, either settling for something "meh" or forking out more $$ for another round. At the low end, crowd sourcing logo design makes a lot of sense.
joelhooks··on My Daughter’s Homework Is Killing Me
We homeschool and our kids do 2-4 hours of academics per day, generally. Frees up a lot of time for things like "being a kid" and "enjoying life". Some days they don't do any and spend the day building things in minecraft or drawing pictures.

It's awesome, and I highly recommend it to anybody interested in non-institutionalized kids.

joelhooks··on Square open-sources its Vim repo, Maximum Awesome
Here's a similar post from me http://joelhooks.com/blog/2013/04/09/getting-to-know-vim/

Starting from blank and building my own dotfiles is what did the trick for me. Using a big ass template actually made it more difficult.

joelhooks··on A Startup Reading List
We homeschool and that was the one off the list I bought immediately for my kids.
joelhooks··on Why does Angular.js rock?
Require is a service locator, so you are getting some of the inversion of control benefits, but I greatly prefer the injections of the dependencies I need instead of relying on a locator.

In practice the DI approach is very nice, and works consistently. It also makes unit tests more straight forward.

joelhooks··on How do I “think in AngularJS” if I have a jQuery background?
We've built a large AngularJS application and one of the requirements was screen reader usage and keyboard accessibility. It took some effort, but it works very well.
