Unfortunately none of them are perfect as your data scales, each have up and downsides...

joelhaasnoot··on Wikipedia is much deeper and nuanced than imagined
Right, I'm sure 100MM is mostly not going to sysadmins, but I wonder what percentage of it _is_
joelhaasnoot··on Wikipedia is much deeper and nuanced than imagined
Direct costs maybe but how much of the staff cost is staff required to make the site run?
joelhaasnoot··on Satlas: Open Geospatial Data Generated by AI
So if I'm understanding correctly this is using AI to fancily upscale Senitel 2 data, essentially guessing what it's seeing, and then suggesting the output of that should be used for making new products/decisions/models. Sounds a bit like CSI Zoom Enhance stuff...
joelhaasnoot··on Why libvirt supports only 14 PCIe hotplugged devices on x86-64
Amazing, thanks, that closes the loop!
joelhaasnoot··on Why libvirt supports only 14 PCIe hotplugged devices on x86-64
But this doesn't answer the question why 14 and not 16. There's a diff of two there...
joelhaasnoot··on Stopping at 90%
I'd actually advocate to stop before 90% so that you can figure out if the 90% is the right thing...
joelhaasnoot··on Launch HN: Artie (YC S23) – Real time data replication to data warehouses
Do you support PostGIS? This seems to be an issue with a lot of solutions I've seen...
joelhaasnoot··on Launch HN: Artie (YC S23) – Real time data replication to data warehouses
Many of them really just suck (depending on your workload)
joelhaasnoot··on Reddark: Website to watch subreddits going dark
Using the API (that would be some irony!) or scraping?
joelhaasnoot··on Scaling up the Prime Video audio/video monitoring service and reducing costs
Half of the AWS certifications isn't about what's what but what to use when and using it for the right use case.
joelhaasnoot··on Translating the Bible is a vexed task
Also how do you translate concepts that were clearly known to the readers to modern times. Do you entrust that readers have someone to tell them what this would've meant, or do you adapt to something more apt in their language. For example in countries where they don't each bread made from wheat or that isn't a staple, daily food, what do you translate for bread?
joelhaasnoot··on Telemetry settings in Kibana
Cough, is this even legal under GDPR?
joelhaasnoot··on Wiring my home with fiber
I learnt a lot of these things the hard way - this is a good resource describing the different connectors and what they mean
joelhaasnoot··on Amsterdam looks incredibly realistic in the new Call of Duty
Plenty of American tourists standing on roads ;)
joelhaasnoot··on Document Foundation starts charging €8.99 for 'free' LibreOffice
I mean sort of, but you also have to deal with Apple's App Store rules and goons...
joelhaasnoot··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
I believe for many companies that do business in China this is already standard procedure, also for laptops
joelhaasnoot··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
So 10% of Google accounts are now banned?

joelhaasnoot··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
That sounds like Google!
joelhaasnoot··on Never hose out a Honda Element
Using a garden hose to clean the inside of your car with a lot of water
joelhaasnoot··on Twitter is using its embedded JavaScript to hide tweets that have been deleted
If only they had an edit button...
joelhaasnoot··on Eigen: A C++ template library for linear algebra
Ahh, the horror of getting this to compile last week in Python :(

joelhaasnoot··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Palm OS

Simple yet efficient, solving everyday problems and having some of the best apps. You are missed almost daily.

joelhaasnoot··on Localhost
It would be interesting to use Google as a search engine for your own computer, but I'm sure it's not that easy
joelhaasnoot··on iPad Camera Multitasking
I guess it's a little less secret than a camera multitasking entitlement, still not a super "public" thing.
joelhaasnoot··on iPad Camera Multitasking
Ah yes, the private entitlements. There's also a private entitlement to disable Apple Pay/PassKit so that it doesn't clash with things like barcodes (for example transit). That one is pretty Google-able though.
joelhaasnoot··on A free-as-in-freedom re-implementation of Google’s Android user space
With catch up I mostly mean library dependencies. If Google changes the location API calls and popular apps that customers want do update, then the implementation will have to update, or the apps will crash/fail to work/etc.
joelhaasnoot··on A free-as-in-freedom re-implementation of Google’s Android user space
Note that Microsoft basically did this for Windows 10 Mobile but then killed it. I actually recompiled a few apps for it at that time, it worked fine. I imagine getting 95% is easy, the last 4% doable, and the last 1% virtually impossible (not to mention this is a moving target)
