joelangeway··on Programming may one day be about getting the maths right
But the ingredients can't just mix because those classes don't know about each other! They are good self contained classes. We need to employ the "mix ingredients" pattern. Why is the cake cooker tied up with the representation of atmospheric conditions and why is it determining the policy of the oven class? Is bake a method of the cook or the oven? And woe to the programmer who does not have the patience for the BatterRiseModelFactoryFactory documentation, for she must catch every possible exception to prove the compiler that she is humble, though she is forbidden from continuing executing in such an event, for only with a stack can execution proceed and only by unwinding a stack can an exception be caught!

Thank you for giving me something rant about. I like your take on the analogy quite a bit, though I think your take on OO casts it in too good a like by instead describing simple structured programming.

joelangeway··on I don't learn anything on HN anymore, bring back the upvote count
You put that excellently. Indeed, Hacker News was and should be a place where social proof is not desired.
joelangeway··on Ask PG: How has voting habit/volume changed since being hidden?
I'm not sure I care about comment scores, but I am concerned by how much other people seem to. Relying on scores to choose which comments to read is like getting all your news from the most watched cable news channel. I might prefer that the comments be sorted chronologically.
joelangeway··on Fogus: Node.js should become its own language
My greatest hope is that the makers of node.js will continue to abstain from language changes. Some inconvenient syntax is a small price to pay for the confidence that node.js isn't going to get turned into another regurgitation of Java meets Perl by hordes of perfectly well meaning but unsatisfiable programmers who want everything to work like the things they know. I don't mean to insult the makers or users of other languages, just to highlight the distinction of Javascript.
joelangeway··on IQ, Income and Wealth
The author takes care to point out that it is worth examining the extremes of I.Q. but does not examine the extremes of wealth. I wouldn't begin to argue that those earning even 100 times the median income are necessarily taking advantage of the poor, but those earning 1000 times more are almost certainly extracting some rent on the economy that is hurting us all and are only able to do so because if the political power they have purchased.

Seventy-five year copyrights and drug patents on medications already in use for millennial do not provide extra compensation to anyone who has been more productive than anyone else. They just hurt everyone and funnel money up to the top.

This is not an argument for some kind of intervention, just a plea for smart people not to be fooled into thinking that society is fair.

joelangeway··on On node.js: Javascript on the server and the client is not a big deal
It's not because it is the same language that is in the client or that so many novice programmers all ready know that is important.

It's that it is a much better programming language than any in wide use, developed by people more interested in making something useful than something marketable.

joelangeway··on Breaking the Web with hash-bangs
The purpose and meaning of the hash-bang convention is that there is a "real" url that corresponds to this "javascript" url. That has a lot of advantages that the post does not mention.
joelangeway··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
You'll find more scientifically oriented articles about this subject if you call it nootropics. Here is another personal (not me) anecdote about it which comes off quite differently.

Sorry, I'm not a physicist. I just like listen to lectures while I work. Please post here if you find something though.

"I confess that something in me tightens whenever I hear a scientist pontificating on issues that belong to the arena of philosophy or metaphysics. I will gladly listen to Stephen Hawking when he holds forth on matters of theoretical physics, but he’s as qualified to talk about philosophical and religious issues as any college freshman."

The existence of the universe is very much a matter of theoretical physics and Steven Hawking, understanding this, is surely more qualified to talk about such issues than Rev. Robert Barron regardless of his opinion that they are philosophical or religious.

I don't know what prompted Steven Hawking's appearance in the media with this opinion, but here is a lecture on one explanation for why the universe does not need any first cause, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo

joelangeway··on Building muscle doesn't require lifting heavy weights
Nothing in this is new or unexpected. See Ripptoe and Kilgore's Practical Programming for Strength Training for a comprehensive guide in deciding how much weight to lift how many times.
