joeframbach··on The satellite imagery industry still has no idea what customers want
This post seems to begin _in media res_. I feel like I'm missing a lot of context here. What exactly are we complaining about? Did some event happen?
joeframbach··on PSA: React 18 calls code twice in strict dev mode to detect side effects
We already have Providers for that.
joeframbach··on AWS Lambda function URLs: Built-in HTTPS endpoints
Not sure I understand what you mean, can you elaborate?
joeframbach··on Those HTML attributes you never use
Since modern browsers are capable of rendering pdfs, it's downright infuriating when a site forces me to download a pdf and take more steps to view it. For being a user agent, this feature certainly removes agency from the user. Afaik there is no way to tell Firefox or Chrome to ignore the Content-Disposition header for files it should already know how to render.
joeframbach··on Ask HN: What are other app stores to develop for?
Trello has quite a few fun integrations. I have a board for my home improvement, so I have tasks for things like cleaning filters on a recurring basis. It posts updates to the Slack channel my wife and I share so she can also remind me to do things. I get quotes from contractors for jobs, and post them right to Trello through the Gmail integration.
joeframbach··on I no longer grade my students’ work, and I wish I had stopped sooner
I see this sub-thread is getting heated, so maybe it's a good chance to clear our differences in understanding.

First - Are you coming from a system where a student's rank in class is ordered? In that situation, grades are a zero-sum game, where you may be fighting for Valedictorian status. In the US at least, such things have been a farce for at least 20 years, when I graduated we had 13 Salutatorians in a class of 200, what a joke. The weighted GPA is what matters, even if half the student body has a GPA over 3.5. Nobody here cares what your rank was.

Second - As others have stated - the topic is about bringing the lower-graded students up, not bringing the higher-graded students down. Could you explain why you are reframing the topic?

joeframbach··on Amazon warehouse fires a worker 1 day before his $3000 hiring bonus
Just like every other post in r/maliciouscompliance is from the person at the bottom of the totem pole who is somehow the only person in the company who knows how to do the thing keeping the company afloat. One, the company will be fine without you, and Two, assuredly part of your job was communicating what you're doing so no you are not the best worker in the company. Sheesh.
joeframbach··on Just some red flags. No big deal. Just ignore them (2020)
For prose typing, sure, go ahead and use the home row. My home row is caps-w-e-r-f and h-k-;-enter. I always hit the touch bar enough that I disabled the whole damn thing.
joeframbach··on Show HN: Three Magic Words
Good point, I missed that one.
joeframbach··on Show HN: Three Magic Words
This isn't a logic game, this is a game of "guess what word I'm thinking of".

    - - G G Y
    - E E - S
    - - - - Y

    O P U
    B F K L L
Possible solutions:

    b u G G Y
    p E E k S
    f o l l Y

    f o G G Y
    p E E k S
    b u l l Y

    f o G G Y
    p E E l S
    b u l k Y
I wrote down the solutions ahead of typing them in, in this order, and was extremely frustrated that the answers I came up with, which were correct, did not read your mind. Even more frustrating because when coming up with the solutions I discarded "PEELS" because it's just a four-letter-word with an S at the end, not a proper five-letter-word. It shouldn't have been a solution.
joeframbach··on DarkPattern.games: Find Healthy Mobile Games
Hilarious filter pattern in use in the top games list: https://www.darkpattern.games/games.php?alignment=dark. At the top is a "Filter by Platform" list which filters out, not in. I clicked the Android logo expecting, you know, to filter for Android. The resulting querystring when you click Android is "?alignment=dark&android=0". It literally filters out not in.
joeframbach··on Show HN: A simple Wordle clone in 60 lines, using Hyperscript
Looks good, here are some test cases off the top of my head.

guess: "SASSY", target: "BRASS", expect either "YYBGB" or "BYYGB". I believe your algorithm would return "YYYGB".

guess: "BRASS", target: "SASSY", expect "BBYGY"

guess: "ASSET", target: "BRASS", expect "YYYBB"

guess: "BRASS", target: "ASSET", expect "BBYYY"

joeframbach··on Show HN: A simple Wordle clone in 60 lines, using Hyperscript
wordle-play.com fails the test. wordlegame.org passes. Implementations disagree, but I agree with how you are defining it should work.
joeframbach··on India will create its own OS to rival Google and Apple
Great, another UC Browser to support and test for.
joeframbach··on Amazon.com Homepage (1999)
The transition from Gurupa to Java (Spring, Horizonte) was long and arduous. If you see a page with /b/ in the url, that's Gurupa.
joeframbach··on Amazon.com Homepage (1999)
The ones I vaguely remember are AlienAA and Outwar. I can't believe these are still running. I haven't even thought about them in almost 20 years.
joeframbach··on Completing a part-time Master's in computer science while working
That was very Mitt Romney of you.
joeframbach··on Completing a part-time Master's in computer science while working
Are you saying that my parents chose our hardships?
joeframbach··on Completing a part-time Master's in computer science while working
I couldn't do it. From 2008 to 2011, I was 3 credits and half a thesis paper short, had to quit for my health. I had lost too much weight, down to 150 lbs at 6'3", I was falling asleep at work and not meeting expectations. It was horrendous. Props to anyone who can make it work. And to those who were bailed out by the Bank of Mom and Dad, a big fuck you.
joeframbach··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
That sounds wrong. TWN having this data is not a condition of my employment.
joeframbach··on We created a new programming language just for our interview process
You've clearly been hurt in the past and I recommend seeking therapy because this reaction is literally from signs of abuse.
joeframbach··on Challenge: can you view my source?
Charles Proxy captures the traffic just fine.
joeframbach··on Roast My Job Offer
A "Job Offer" is the letter you send the candidate that you are hiring after they pass your interview. It contains salary and benefit information specific to that candidate.

This is a "Job Description", not a job offer.

joeframbach··on Show HN: Hacker News client with a twist
> Intuitive keyboard control

Can you expand on that? What were your references when choosing these key commands? Everything else I use chose `?` as the help key. My macbook doesn't even _have_ an `ALT` key...

joeframbach··on Tech-savvy audiences block Google Analytics
"it's only 3% of our users so we don't need to test on FF" to "it's a quarter of our user base, we should at least test it"

To nitpick. Starting with 3/100 FF, times 8 unaccounted for, you get 24/121, 20%.

joeframbach··on IPv6 Watch
You and I have very different opinions about what constitutes a major website. Gentoo isn't exactly on a lot of people's bookmarks bar. Maybe try https://www.alexa.com/topsites instead, and you can give adoption statistics by hits/population rather than number of sites.
joeframbach··on HTML and CSS techniques to reduce your JavaScript
An accordion widget is simply a series of radio button followed by div. You can see this in action at amazon.com in a product page with multiple purchase options, the buy button will have a radio with multiple options, it's just a radio button. An accordion that allows multiple open panes is a series of checkbox followed by div. More advanced, you can create a flashcard app by allotting two checkboxes per card. I used this technique around 3 years ago when I was studying kanji: http://sokogakuen.framba.ch
joeframbach··on The Wrong Abstraction (2016)
On the other hand, it's really difficult to know who is using that shared code. If you make an innocuous change in a shared method, it could affect someone else you don't know.
joeframbach··on Jukebox
And that robot artist will be named "Weird AI".
joeframbach··on RuboCop 0.80: Ruby static code analyzer and code formatter
Yup. `conditional or return fallbackValue`. Rubocop desperately wants to change this to `conditional || return fallbackValue` but that's just.... not a thing.
