joebob42··on Two men got jobs at Amazon just to steal copies of Zelda
Which is to say he's doing kind of shit security, no? I'd have guessed one of the points of security is to keep people who didn't pay, out.
joebob42··on State Farm halts new property insurance policies in California
I think "welcome at almost all places" is dramatically overstating it.

I think you are more likely to get in trouble for shit talking internally than externally, if only because the people who care are more likely to hear.

joebob42··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Probably not. That was my view of them, but that's probably my not really paying attention. It wouldn't surprise me if there was also some element of them giving a misleading impression, but I don't want to go try and find proof of that.
joebob42··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Open ai has had a surprisingly fast pivot from the appearance of being a scrappy open-ish company trying to build something to share and improve the world to more or less unmitigated embrace of the bad sides of big corporate. This is so unbelievably blatant I almost find it hard to credit.
joebob42··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
Thank you, I did not read the article and assumed (based on other comments which are pretty clearly assuming the same) that the title was accurate.
joebob42··on IRS files $44B claims against bankrupt FTX
Software also kind of has reinvented finance. The crypto thrust specifically not so much, but the modern financial system does not look the way it does without software.
joebob42··on The EARN IT bill is back, seeking to scan our messages and photos
Don't they usually store a hash of it? And doesn't it therefore for the most part work exactly the way you say it ideally should?

Of course leaking the hash of my password might make it easier to crack, to some extent, but if they've done a good job then this is much better than it being something the bank can trivially lose.

joebob42··on ATC staff shortages: 11,000 flights cut from NYC and DCA in summer 2023
Its easy to find. This tone suggests that the person's argument is somehow invalid because they reference easy to find documents without linking them. Perhaps this isn't the intent, but it reads to me as combative, which seems unnecessary.
joebob42··on The least impactful way to spend $300M?
Sure, but how do you know who that is? And if you give it to 300 random people it probably gets very little done.

I'd certainly do nothing of value with it, and I like to think I'm both a decent dev and a decent communicator, so it's not beyond imagination I could convince someone I was worth it if they were just looking for people to dump $1,000,000 on.

joebob42··on Apple joins Amazon, Google, and Microsoft in tech industry layoffs
Agree that the title is misleading. The article at least has the good grace to correct itself in its subtitle and also quite quickly within the text.
joebob42··on Tabloid – The Clickbait Headline Programming Language
They say in the OP that they did this as opposed to database homework.
joebob42··on Ask HN: 1M layoffs soon, should gov intervene?
Presumably they save it by placing it into the market in lots of cases, no?
joebob42··on Google search 'raters' demand fair treatment, deliver petition at headquarters
Yeah, I just thought the reference to CA minimum wage at all seemed a little out of place.
joebob42··on Google search 'raters' demand fair treatment, deliver petition at headquarters
They keep saying they make less than ca minimum wage, but as best I understand they don't work in CA so I don't understand why that's relevant? People all over the world make less than CA minimum wage, it's a lot of money in many places.
joebob42··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
Yeah, sorry, Im not trying to make a claim as to the cause here, just agreeing that this really does exist and really does make life way shittier in some very major cities.
joebob42··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
I don't know. I lived in a wealthy suburb outside San Diego and did not experience this problem (I used to leave my keys in my car with the car unlocked, which was obviously moronic but never caused me any problems), and I lived briefly in SF where it was substantially worse.
joebob42··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
I live in a decently "nice" part of Seattle. Constantly concerned stuff will get stolen. Have had car broken in to more than once. "Terror" might be overstating if, but the level of property crime is objectively harming my day-to-day experience.
joebob42··on Blogging is not dying anytime soon
I've never understood the elsagate content. Why are they making it? Is it the sort of thing that young children find appealing if left alone? I can't understand why that would be, and it doesn't seem substantially easier to make than the equivalent content without the disturbing/ inappropriate edge.
joebob42··on How we turned the tables to catch my sister’s Bumble stalker
I'm not clear why they would be responsible for his hitting a pedestrian.
joebob42··on P-22 has been euthanized
I don't think it's worth what it costs.
joebob42··on The impotence of being clever
I don't think anyone is claiming that's the only factor, but it does seem that some people have higher natural aptitudes for some modes of thought, at least to me.
joebob42··on BlockFi files for bankruptcy as FTX fallout spreads
For baseball card I basically agree, with the main difference being you won't reliably make money on a given card. Some will go up and make you money, but realistically it's a collectible.

For lumber, there is an end user who wants the lumber to e.g. make a house. There might be some middlemen who buy it and then resell it, but they are also generally providing value in some way: storing it to smooth over demand variance, doing arbitrage to improve pricing, moving it from one location to another, etc. There's never just an infinite chain of middlemen selling it for ever increasing prices.

joebob42··on Ask HN: Company is going through layoffs, but still interviewing me. Red flag?
Its definitely worth considering, but it's also entirely possible (especially at a very large company) that you are being hired into a different part of the business which is in some way isolated from the layoffs. E.g. joining a core business team while R and D / exploratory new stuff is getting cut might still be fine.

I'd also just ask them, although of course it's hard to trust any answer you get completely.

joebob42··on AI Art Panic
I don't think for "art as art" purposes where we take some painting and say it's worth a million dollars and put it in a museum ai can replace humans. But a lot of art is much more utilitarian: art in games, art in movies and tv, in picture books, etc. In those cases I care that it looks how it is meant to and costs as little as possible to make.

I feel like the majority of "art" we consume falls in the second category.

joebob42··on Westinghouse sees a tech disrupter in its eVinci microreactor
Sure, but that's a different and unrelated argument to the question of theoretical cost which is what was being discussed.
joebob42··on Ask HN: Hourly billers, do you bill for only focused work?
I have minor adhd, which winds up meaning I rarely make it through a full hour of work without some small diversion, and each days work looks a little different, but I still get done what needs doing in aggregate.

I moved to billimg by the day to avoid this, it has felt like a good compromise between people wanting granular controls and me not wanting to go insane tracking every second.

joebob42··on I fought the PayPal and I won
It honestly doesn't really matter. That's a plausible explanation, but the customer shouldn't have to care / make special allowances because this is a big company with lots of people. It either does good things or it doesn't, and in this case it didn't.
joebob42··on Laws barring noncompete clauses spreading
Yeah, that's fair, if I only got base salary I'd be pretty strongly disincentivized to take such a deal.
joebob42··on Laws barring noncompete clauses spreading
But if they're willing to pay it, it seems like it probably means this is a real issue rather than just a way to punish employees who leave, and it seems like they're reasonably compensating employees for the problem.
joebob42··on U.S. workers have gotten less productive – no one is sure why
I'm not 100% sure if this is satire but it brought me joy.
