joduplessis··on Vibe engineering
To people reading the article: replace the word "agent" with "intern".

> Without tests? Your intern might claim something works without having actually tested it at all, plus any new change could break an unrelated feature without you realizing it. Test-first development is particularly effective with interns that can iterate in a loop.

Vibe engineer? No, try technical manager.

joduplessis··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
I've got an Ideapad that had Win11 on - completely removed it and installed Ubuntu. I've primarily used a Mac over the last decade, but it's insane how close the Ubuntu/Gnome experience comes - really have been super impressed. There are actually a few things I prefer on it too - the only (rather big) downside is that the web runs visually worse on it. I don't know how, but painting and font rendering feels suboptimal (compared to Windows and MacOS).
joduplessis··on Show HN: Pyscn – Python code quality analyzer for vibe coders
There's no way vibe coders care about this. Focus on real engineers.
joduplessis··on How functional programming shaped and twisted front end development
No offense intended to the author, but this is the most bizarre list of points.

I also realise how weird it must be writing a personal blog article and then have random internet-folk dissecting it. Hope this doesn't dissuade any future articles.

joduplessis··on A WebGL game where you deliver messages on a tiny planet
Fantastic work! We need more of this on the web.
joduplessis··on You didn't see it coming
"he who talks loud, saying nothing"
joduplessis··on Notion 3.0
> Your Notion Agent tackles real work because it understands your work and can take action.

What on god's green earth sort of a line is this?

joduplessis··on macOS Tahoe
If Apple stopped at the over-saturated/rounded-corners, it would have been a decent iteration on something established (and very much not broken). I realise the transparent icons are optional - but it now looks like a budget Android theme.
joduplessis··on Performance-focused forks of styled-components
CSS-in-JS is possibly the worst idea to come out of the last 10 years of frontend. Saying that as someone who has written a lot of CSS-in-JS code.
joduplessis··on Israel committing genocide in Gaza, scholars group says
No shit, Sherlock.
joduplessis··on Zuckerberg’s AI hires disrupt Meta with swift exits and threats to leave
How are people still on FB or Insta? I've been absent for a few years now, but whenever I read about FB it seems worse than ever.
joduplessis··on I Don't Have Spotify
I didn't realise Spotify was a link sharing platform. Oh wait, it's not.
joduplessis··on We’re Not So Special: A new book challenges human exceptionalism
These sorts of (sorry to say, but) dumb articles (+ books) I don't expect to see on HN.
joduplessis··on Claude Sonnet 4 now supports 1M tokens of context
As far as coding goes Claude seems to be the most competent right now, I like it. GPT5 is abysmal - I'm not sure if they're bugs, or what, but the new release takes a good few steps back. Gemini still a hit and miss - and Grok seems to be a poor man's Claude (where code is kind of okay, a bit buggy and somehow similar to Claude).
joduplessis··on GitHub is no longer independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation
I'm starting to really detest the AI-everywhere thing. You're starting to feel it absolutely everywhere - good products turning shit just to capitalize on the hype.
joduplessis··on Dropbox announces new gen server hardware for higher efficiency and scalability
You can actually keep it offline (permanently) and their sync is more immediate. iCloud gave me issues when downloading many (large files) and you couldn't really prioritise certain files. That, and a few other smaller things - like a much better web app experience, etc.

I actually still pay for iCloud - but mainly for the Photos storage space.

joduplessis··on Dropbox announces new gen server hardware for higher efficiency and scalability
Recently moved all my stuff from iCloud to DB - worth every penny.
joduplessis··on One Million Screenshots
Nice! Only suggestion would be to not snap the zoom (when using the keyboard) - but very cool!
joduplessis··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
Lol, no - unfortunately not Bismarck either. :) It's a common Afrikaans/SA surname.
joduplessis··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
> because they go to big to fast.

I didn't say anything about doing it fast. Prepping for an ultra is a long term thing.

joduplessis··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
I was of course generalizing, but the point I'm making is that you need to get some (very) long term fitness goals. This usually drives you to find like minded people and action long term nutritional changes. You can get to a 5km within 5 weeks.
joduplessis··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
Don't try to be healthy, try to be strong or try to do an ultra - or even crossfit. Community & nutrition usually follow IMO.
joduplessis··on Vanilla JavaScript support for Tailwind Plus
I've been working with TW more lately and I must admit - there is a convenience factor there that is really nice - and it abstracts a lot of the finicky design system thinking.

But, if you're building any long-term product, investing in your own design system + component library will put many many more miles on the board in terms of DX, flexibility, aesthethic language, dependency footprint, etc.

joduplessis··on AI is killing the web – can anything save it?
AI is killing advertising and social media, not the web. And I'm sure these LLM products are going to start introducing some form of advertising soon anyways.
joduplessis··on The bewildering phenomenon of declining quality
This is one of the reasons I do like Apple products. I've owned many PC's/Android phones/etc. - none of them come even close the longevity of Apple hardware (the exceptions are real, for sure).
joduplessis··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
I'm not running so much anymore (foot injury) - but for the last 15 years I've spent an hour+ on the road or in the gym 5 - 6 (sometimes 7) days a week. Also through sickness, injury, etc. It's changed the way I view being alive and healthy - I actually consider it "chronic medication" :) Kudos to the OP though - that's some mad dedication.
joduplessis··on macOS Icon History
Almost every one of the 2025 icons look worse.

EDIT: And most of them seem to have adopted this bloom effect which just makes them look blurry.

joduplessis··on Being too ambitious is a clever form of self-sabotage
If you consider any creative endeavor as a burden, I suggest you relook at why you're doing it. You have to love the process (not just the outcome), and in this case, that "gap" Ira Glass refers to usually acts like fuel on the fire.
joduplessis··on People instantly decide whether to trust a product based on design
The sweet spot is of course having function actually follow form. Very often this is where the whole thing breaks - good design, poor implementation.
joduplessis··on Cloudflare was down
Hopefully they also publish the prompt that did this.
