jmh530··on The Long-Term Stock Exchange Is Worth a Shot
It's all theoretical. God knows.
jmh530··on The Long-Term Stock Exchange Is Worth a Shot
I think you're right that we don't really understand yet the implications of this idea. For instance, it's not just expectation that should be emphasized, it's the discount rate at which the present value is performed. Conditional on the expected value of the earnings over the future, one can calculate the implied discount rate given a company's price (equity risk premium). When this value is higher, the market is effectively more present-oriented, they care less about future cash flows. And vice-versa. Would the equity risk premium fall under this type of market? Would that mean lower equity prices? I don't know.

There is some research in political science on paying for votes in elections. They came to the conclusion that you should pay $x and receive sqrt(x) votes. 100 dollars -> 10 votes. I would think the same reasoning would work here. Hold stock $x days, receive sqrt(x) votes (years is tricky because you can hold less than 1 year and the value increases quite a bit during that period).
jmh530··on Killing the C++ Modules Technical Specification
I think D uses 3. You import a module in the source file, but if you need to include outside source files, then they would have to be listed when invoking the compiler. D also has a package system so that this isn't needed if you have sub-modules within a larger project.
jmh530··on The Corrosion of High School Debate
I started out doing policy debate in the early 2000s and eventually switched to Congress. Was a wise decision. Taught much more about how to actually speak persuasively in front of people and make coherent arguments instead of just talking as fast as you can.

But when you need ECC, you really need it. My FreeNAS server has like 32GB or ECC memory because it runs ZFS, which basically doesn't work unless you have ECC memory. However, my desktop computer or my laptop don't need it. When you need ECC, use it, but if you don't need it, then no biggie.
jmh530··on “Adobe Flash Player is required for interactive charts”
My team shares a BB, so I can walk over to the machine and get 15min stale prices.
jmh530··on “Adobe Flash Player is required for interactive charts”
They used to, shut down in 2012.

jmh530··on “Adobe Flash Player is required for interactive charts”
My stupid work computer makes me re-install flash pretty much every time I use it. That instantly makes it way too annoying to use google finance's charts. Thankfully yahoo finance has gotten a little better recently and doesn't need flash. They both kind of suck though.
jmh530··on Tulipmania: More Boring Than You Thought
I just posted about this without checking to see if anyone else had said anything...
jmh530··on Tulipmania: More Boring Than You Thought
This is a frustrating article, but perhaps the book is better.

The key work here is really Earl Thompson's "The tulipmania: Fact or artifact?" in Public Choice. The article at least does not make any mention of Thompson or his argument. In particular, his argument is that there was a legal change in how the tulip contracts worked and so it didn't make sense to compare the previous price history with the history after that change.

jmh530··on TCC – Tiny C Compiler
Interesting.

The motivation to put up the mirror is that the creator of the original project has no interest in changing his project to work with the languages' package manager, but has endorsed others mirroring it. So I could mirror the original project on Github and add the files needed for the languages' package manager to work with it.

Thanks.
jmh530··on JSLinux – Run Linux or other Operating Systems in your browser
If you're on Windows, could you use it instead of a virtualized Linux? Maybe a work computer disabled the virtualization?
jmh530··on TCC – Tiny C Compiler
How would I go about creating a github mirror for some other project? I mean I get that I can just upload the project as it is, but what if I want it so that updates to the original are reflected automatically in the mirror?
jmh530··on Efficient Air-Conditioning Beams Heat into Space
How much does this save vs. replacing these panels with solar panels?
jmh530··on Ask HN: What maths are critical to pursuing ML/AI?
My recollection is that you need neither real analysis nor measure theory to appreciate it, but it's been a while since I read it. You might get more out of it if you have studied those.

I disagree on multivar calc. Statistics often makes use of matrix derivatives. I have found it helpful to know.

jmh530··on D as a Better C
Could you recommend some resources on these techniques?
jmh530··on D as a Better C
How about betterC# instead? Given that C++/CLR is a thing, I imagine that it would be possible to get D working on it. JVM is a bit more limited in what it allows vs. CLR. For instance, C# has the unsafe keyword that allows pointer arithmetic, which would correspond to @system in D. @safe D would correspond to the normal C# behavior on that front.

Probably a lot of work though and I'm not sure why anybody would bother.

jmh530··on ScienceBeam – using computer vision to extract PDF data
How about PDF to Latex? Matlab allows Latex strings.
