jmarbach··on Scott's Cheap Flights: Growing a small side project into a booming business
Disclosure: I built a competing tool for finding cheap flights, https://concorde.io.

I think the secret of Scott's success is his incredible writing ability. Finding the cheap flights is the easy part. Communicating with users in a way that consistently wins over their hearts and minds takes a high level of consideration and creativity. This writing ability combined with his co-founder's understanding and application of direct response marketing has produced fantastic results. I am glad to see their success.

jmarbach··on Bargain Travel Sites May No Longer Be Bargains
Yes, exactly, the author confuses the term OTA versus a metasearch engine. Expedia and Priceline are the largest OTA's after consolidation in recent years, creating what is now a duopoly. Furthermore, Expedia and Priceline have created an illusion of choice by acquiring the majority of the high traffic metasearch sites and then deciding to maintain their separate brands.

jmarbach··on Facebook Must Really Suck At Machine Learning
This problem has been going on for years and only now is it receiving wide recognition due to the recent election. I wrote about fake Google News in mid-2014:

jmarbach··on Google Flights will now tell you when fares will increase
From the first sentence of the API docs:

> The Low Fare Forecast (beta) API forecasts whether the lowest published fare will rise, fall or stay the same within the next 7 days.

jmarbach··on Google Flights will now tell you when fares will increase
> When's a cheap day to fly to and return from Las Vegas?

This is exactly the problem I have addressed with my flight search tool, Concorde: https://concorde.io/sign-up

jmarbach··on Google Flights will now tell you when fares will increase
Similarly, the article mentions that Google Flights is now more closely competing with Hopper, a mobile app for finding flights. Hopper already offers this price prediction service, and it is powered by Sabre's price prediction API: https://developer.sabre.com/docs/read/rest_apis/air/intellig...

Currently the email notifications are triggered based on your home airport. If we post a deal from one of your home airports, we send you an email. However, as I continue to develop the site, I intend to offer more granular settings for receiving email notifications, similar to more granular settings for the Discovery results as well.
jmarbach··on Hipmunk (YC S10) Acquired by Concur
Thanks for checking it out!

1. By creating an account, you can search from your home airport to hundreds of destinations worldwide. 2. Yes, the filters you propose are very achievable in the near-term, meaning that I already have the data, I just need to create the appropriate front-end for viewing it. 3. Exactly. The quality of the deal is intended to be mileage-run worthy, but not necessarily everyone wants to earn miles. I've found a lot of people just want a cheap and fun vacation spot that is somewhere far from home.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions for improvement! Thanks!

jmarbach··on Alphabet slides 5% after missing earnings expectations on revenue of $20.3B
The current search market is ~4.6 billion searches per day. Google owns about 75% of the market, with ~3.5 billion searches per day. DuckDuckGo has about 12 million searches per day, ~0.25% of the market. Bing/Yahoo are the other big players in the search market, with between ~10-12% each.
jmarbach··on Amazon Associates Arbitrage: Amazon’s Own Success May Be Hurting Themselves
I do not believe this is a valid comparison. The clicks are not happening on my website, they are happening on Reddit. I am paying for the clicks.

If I were to use Adsense in my experiment, I would've most likely earned between $10-20 from 4,800 pageviews, around $2-3eCPM. By comparison, I earned about $175 with Amazon Associates from 4,800 clicks. As LyndsySimon commented, Adsense would earn only about 10% of my earning potential with Amazon.

jmarbach··on Amazon Associates Arbitrage: Amazon’s Own Success May Be Hurting Themselves
The cost per click is dependent on an ad with a high CTR, in addition to a low cost per thousand impressions. Reddit ads, as mentioned in the post for example, are one place with low priced ad inventory.
jmarbach··on Amazon Associates Arbitrage: Amazon’s Own Success May Be Hurting Themselves
Pay $0.02 per click, send that click to Amazon, earn $0.04 per click. Earn $0.02 per click margin for funneling cheaply acquired traffic to an entity that is willing and able to pay more for that click.
jmarbach··on Amazon Associates Arbitrage: Amazon’s Own Success May Be Hurting Themselves
Great point regarding providing motivation for people to sell their wares on Amazon. I did not think about that.

This especially makes sense to me because the majority of Amazon's sales are filled by third-party merchants, including nearly 100% of their sales when they launch new product categories.

Hi,

Glad that you found a great deal via Concorde! At the moment, we are posting deals by user demand. We have had a handful of requests for deals originating in the NYC area, so we are planning to start posting deals from NYC airports in the next week or so. Keep reminding us!

Thanks for checking out Concorde!

jmarbach··on Show HN: Live Air Traffic Over the SF Bay Area
Good point. Real-time is definitely not accurate, but I'd be willing to say 5-10 minutes delayed is as close to a "live" view as is legally allowed.

jmarbach··on Spam sites in Google News
I too have found some serious quality control issues with Google News. Some news sites are redirecting their mobile viewers (knowingly or not) to the app store instead of giving them the article that they clicked on.
