jm547ster··on Containment gets harder every day we delay
It reduces the R0 factor sufficiently to give time to get a proper treatment plan in place.

Meaning antivirals that won’t require millions of people being placed in ICUs which the healthcare system currently cannot support neither in infrastructure nor manpower.

They’ve also had a dress rehearsal in the less deadly MERS outbreak. I’m sure preparedness and public acceptance of gravity of the situation had a great sway in outcome

It can, however you’ll have to build your own sequencers or find other people’s work to cobble together
jm547ster··on Ask HN: Advice for a new and inexperienced tech lead?
This does not apply in all circumstances. My jump into tech lead came as the old tech lead (15+ years xp) and young superstar(~4 years with wisdom beyond his years) departed from it.

The replacements were a developer just coming off a PIP and a new graduate with zero industry experience, having not interned. I still kept the focus on developing the team as much as possible but the candle needed to be burned on both ends: taking on a large majority of implementation whilst quietly fixing mistakes made as to not shake growing confidence were commonplace throughout the first 6 months.

Towards the end of our involvement in our product I’m proud to say that both developers had outgrew their ranks and delegation and trust came without thought. I was pretty close to burnout by the end of that year if I’m honest with myself though and my own career progression has without doubt stalled due to it

jm547ster··on Ask HN: 2020 goals and resolutions?
Careful with the toe touch, can aggravate certain back issues. Try diagnose with what you suffer and target the weaknesses.

Generally cobra stretch type manoeuvres are a good starting point. Don't neglect some strengthening of the upper/mid back, even if it's just some resistance bands etc.

jm547ster··on Alan Kay's answer to ‘what are some forgotten books programmers should read?’
All sorts, but I believe it was born out of frustration at unnecessary complexity arising from standard enterprise development.

Hickey’s choice of hosting it on the JVM was ingenious, gives access to one of the largest most battle tested ecosystems in modern day enterprise engineering.

It’s much more versatile these days with the likes of ClojureScript, it’s being used in anything from real-time multimedia projects to SPA JavaScript work.

Mention of AthleanX and no mention of face pulls. I think aside the low back and ab exercises you mention it’s the single best antidote to the rounded-shoulders computer posture.

He recommends them after ever single workout and from doing this the last couple of months has done wonders from my experience.

I can see how you’re jumping to conclusions but I’m sure the original comment is a reference the widely acknowledged fact that women are more inclined to be interested in people rather than things.

jm547ster··on How true hackers write JavaScript
Really? Plenty of needlessly abbreviated function names IMO. At a quick glance is it immediately obvious what posf or arem are without looking into the context in which they're being used? Don't get me wrong it's a nice piece of code but super-readable it isn't.

jm547ster··on In India, Summer Heat May Soon Be Literally Unbearable
This is patently false, eliminating all agricultural animals from the US would drop total greenhouse emissions by around 3%. Factoring in transport of said animal goods would only be made worse by a need to ship the bulkier alternative (vegetables)

jm547ster··on Ask HN: What did you do to recover after a herniated spinal disc?
Lay on my back for about 3 months and became reliant on tramadol and neuropathic pain medication (gabapentin).

I'm still taking the later and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's still keeping some discomfort at bay, it doesn't work for everyone.

Once I felt well, I very slowly returned to the gym, took up swimming on a doctors advice and am even at a point where I do quite light deadlifts and low back exercise (with great care and attention to form). I believe swimming was paramount in my recovering along with a lot of care over my posture and using a McKenzie roll in my car whilst driving.
