jlv2··on HeyWhatsThat – Calculate viewshed and panorama for any point on Earth
Agreed. I climbed it 5 years ago, and immediately recognized the name.
jlv2··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
I've had this for 10+ years. I use it for a family domain. Everyone in the family has a user in the legacy G-suite, but it's really only set up as an email forwarder to their personal gmail account. No one logs in under it.

I'm not going to pay $6/user/mo just to do that, and I don't think any of them (all adults at this point) would either.

If I could get up an email forwarding without needing a paying user, I'd probably move to Business Starter for a user or two. I've not reconfigured any users in there for about 6 years, so I have to look to see if this is possible.

jlv2··on Felony charges are first in a fatal crash involving Autopilot
There was no "fully self driving" in play with this accident. The driver has the responsibility to control the car. He let the car drive through a red light. He's wholly at fault.

(for background: I've driven tens of thousands of miles using Autopilot in both a Model S and Model X, on both local roads and highways)

jlv2··on Microsoft confirms Exchange Year 2022 problem
Long ago I learned a lesson: Don't write your own date time handling code.

(because you will always miss something)

jlv2··on Microsoft confirms Exchange Year 2022 problem
I'm sure that was the patch.
jlv2··on Unix Admin Horror Story Summary (1992)
I vaguely thought I posted in this thread back then.

Back in 1984/5, I had a directory in my homedir called "etc" for of miscellaneous stuff. One day I thought: that's a bad name, I should remove it. I errantly typed "rm -rf /etc". Thankfully I got a "Permission Denied" error. Except, I then did the obvious override, "sudo rm -rf /etc" (1). This was on a VAX 11/780 with about 50 undergrads doing project work on. The command ran for a while and then I heard moans out in the terminal room, as the system crashed. It took us about 3 hours to restore from backup tape.

(1) I used to have to explain what "sudo" was, because this happened before we posted it to USENET, and before it was ubiquitous on systems.

jlv2··on The Unix Magic Poster
Agreed! My wife and I each have one.

(had - one is now in the possession of my adult son)

jlv2··on On the Decline of Perl – external factors
The whole "Perl 6 won't be backwards compatible" effectively took the wind out of the sails. If you force people to have to redo what they already have, that will give them an incentive to investigate other alternatives. Couple this with the 15 years of "Perl 6" going nowhere just opened the door for everything else to grow in it's place.
jlv2··on USB 3.0* Radio Frequency Interference on 2.4 GHz Devices (2012)
Zigbee is in 2.4GHz; Z-Wave is 900MHz. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-Wave#Radio_frequencies
jlv2··on Please don't upgrade Docker without asking first
This response totally misses the point.

"Sorry about it, we rushed a bit the last update and introduce a severe bug. I'll try to fix it today and if I cannot, rollback last grpcfuse patches."

jlv2··on I captured the Iceland volcano eruption from up close
I toured that part of Iceland 2 years ago. That area is very desolate, even that close to the capital.
jlv2··on Viral 'I'm not a cat' filter is decades-old software
11 years is "decades-old".
jlv2··on Email a Dumpster Fire

jlv2··on GM sells out first year of electric Hummer production
And with only a $100 deposit, the pre-orders don't mean much.
jlv2··on GM sells out first year of electric Hummer production
With an estimated 200kWh battery pack and only 350 miles of range, the EV Hummer continues to show little to no regard for efficiency, making it perfect for the Hummer brand.
jlv2··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
My Sony TV from 2014 has ads in the TV Guide that gets content from the Internet.
jlv2··on Tesla suffers network outage disabling vehicles’ mobile app
From the article: “If you’re unable to unlock your car and drive, that’s a problem,” he said.

That's a bogus comment hovering on FUD.

In no general usage do you need app access to the car via the Internet in order to unlock or drive. My wife just drove one of our cars during the outage and didn't even known it was ongoing.

I would assume that even with the Model 3 using the phone as a key, it just uses LE Bluetooth -- not Internet access via the app.

jlv2··on Hundred Year Mistakes
Too bad he didn't post this on Precedence Day last month (February 17).

jlv2··on Moviefone, Worth 1% of Its Former Value, Is Being Run by One Employee
> The great thing, looking back on it, was that it wasn't "customized for your taste" and you could learn a lot by looking at the listings.

This is still a great thing.

jlv2··on Burnoutindex.org
My burnout index is 5/6. No surprise there.

I'm more interested in why the site reloads the top portion of the page after the initial load. You can tell, because the top image changes from the person sitting on the left side of the table a flipped one where they are on the right side of the table.

jlv2··on Weather.com Has Become the Pawn of a Data Theft Scheme
Your battery status and orientation aren't going to be useful for tracking you in a "future attack on targeted users", since by then both would have completely changed.
jlv2··on Weather.com Has Become the Pawn of a Data Theft Scheme

jlv2··on Weather.com Has Become the Pawn of a Data Theft Scheme
He hasn't even shown this is a malicious ad, rather than a misleading, bogus offer.
jlv2··on Weather.com Has Become the Pawn of a Data Theft Scheme
This whole article is bunk. How do they get this conclusion?

"So anyone who has visited weather.com from a mobile device in the past few months is now vulnerable to future malicious activity down the road."

jlv2··on Weather.com Has Become the Pawn of a Data Theft Scheme
This page quotes this from "Binary Defense":

"if a user stumbles upon a webpage that has a compromised third-party library, the malware runs checks. These checks consist of who the user agent is, the type of device they are operating on, the level of battery it has, and the device’s motion and orientation. After these checks are verified, the malware will connect the infected device to a remoter peer prior to transferring the device’s IP address"

This statement is written to make it seem like like something bad is happening. But read the statement -- it's total BS.
