Why do you live your life like this?!?

Not if done professionally, positively, specifically, and helpfully.
jldl805··on Ask HN: What are some “10x” software product innovations you have experienced?
I get the same thing. My last name isn't that common though so I've messaged the culprits specifically (especially if they use their phone number when signing up for whatever it is) to ask them to please stop using it.

Someone will have the idea and sign up for 5-6 things all in one burst, which usually inspires my outreach.

I made my account(s) off invite codes and have "just my last name" at gmail dot com as an address... it's one of my most prized possessions, to this day!
jldl805··on Reddit: Online Presence Indicators
Out of curiosity... what would you propose is a better solution? I prefer no status to a fudged status, personally.

*edit: From that thread: "Apologies for not being more clear about this point in our announcement. When a user has toggled their status to "Hiding" it means they have disabled the feature. Once you are “Hiding” the presence indicator is turned off and no one will be able to see your online status anywhere on the site. This will not change unless you change it, regardless of what device you use to browse Reddit. .

Why did we choose "Hiding" vs "Offline?" Well, you're not really offline even if you've disabled this feature, and we wanted that to be clear in the broader sense of the term.

We will have an explanation published in our Help Center detailing all of this before we publicly roll this feature out to everyone."

It's happened everywhere in the US now too.

I live and breathe on the internet and have never been moderated once, even freely expressing myself, insulting people who deserve it, etc.

My point here is that if you think the current social media options have "heavy handed" moderation, you're probably the problem, not them.
