jlas··on Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft Create Partnership on AI
Is OpenAI planning to be a part of this?
jlas··on New Draft of “Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction, Second Edition”
What was your thesis? And what are some areas do you see RL being applied (besides the somewhat contrived game solvers we've been seeing)?
jlas··on Twitter's Bootstrap hit 100,000 stars on GitHub
I've also never heard this. And IMHO this is very wrong way to think about it. Bootstrap is a comprehensive set of well designed and coordinated UI widgets and paradigms. And it's all customizable, so you don't have to get stuck with that "bootstrap look".

jlas··on Scaling to 100M: MySQL Is a Better NoSQL
It sounds reasonable, but with DNS you'd get geographic distribution for free, right? Won't you have to do something like sharding to achieve a similar thing with MySQL?
jlas··on Scaling to 100M: MySQL Is a Better NoSQL
> When someone clicks a link to a Wix site... That server has to resolve the requested site from the site address by performing a key/value lookup URL to a site.

So Wix uses MySQL to resolve site routes internally? Is this the best way to do it? Would it be possible to use internal domain names and rely on DNS to resolve everything?

jlas··on Fitbit Acquires Coin
Is there any mention of how much the deal was worth?

Seems like mostly an acquihire, does Coin even have a steady revenue stream?

jlas··on LispY C
> Because LISP is expressive and C is fast and I wanted the best of both worlds is the short answer.

I'm not sure how well known it is, but some Lisps can be statically compiled to machine code.

But one thing I've wondered about is how good can it get? Are there any benchmarks for Lisp vs. C?

jlas··on Cal – Display a Calendar in Your Terminal
The western calendar didn't even exist until the 1500s, so asking for the calendar in 16AD is sort of contrived.
jlas··on Cal – Display a Calendar in Your Terminal
I think better UX would be show me the closest one to today, which is 2016
jlas··on Show HN: Pathfinder – Routing as a service
Ha, I thought it was packet switched network routing as a service.
jlas··on When code is suspiciously fast: adventures in dead code elimination
Article doesn't mention the big difference between the recursive and iterative Fibonacci solutions, which is the O(2^n) and O(n) respective time complexity.
jlas··on OpenAI Gym: Toolkit for developing, comparing reinforcement learning algorithms
Other tools for developing / comparing RL algorithms:

* Burlap (from Brown-UMBC) https://github.com/jmacglashan/burlap

* RL Glue http://glue.rl-community.org/wiki/Main_Page

Also looks like some of the challenges come from ALE: https://github.com/mgbellemare/Arcade-Learning-Environment

jlas··on My Biggest Regret as a Programmer
> and of course we have class syntax now anyway

Even using Class syntax you're still locked into prototypical inheritance model. There is no classical inheritance in JS. (Probably a backward step in UX to call it "Class")

jlas··on Ask HN: Pick startups for YC to fund
What's the incentive for helping you pick the next big startup? What if you gave users a trivial amount of equity for their input?
jlas··on Twitter quietly rolls out algo timeline
Configurable under the Timeline option in account settings, also mentioned in the docs: https://support.twitter.com/articles/164083#settings
jlas··on Coding Interview Preparation in JavaScript
Turns out getting a production site up and working has little to do with finding the k-th permutation...
jlas··on Ask HN: Best way to learn HTML and CSS for web design?
Please try to support free and open resources like MDN (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/) and http://www.webplatform.org instead of w3schools

jlas··on Disabling npm's progress bar yields a 2x npm install speed improvement
What we need is to put this into a Docker container then parallelize the cloud instances using asynchronous message brokers enterprise
jlas··on The State of Meteor Part 2: What Happens Next
I can't imagine how many enterprise sales they're losing because of lack of SQL support
jlas··on Why I Left Gulp and Grunt for Npm Scripts
> Misconception #3: Gulp’s Streams Are Necessary for Fast Builds

The author fails to acknowledge that gulp is also asynchronous. This is what makes it "fast". Streaming is just a nice abstraction for passing data through a pipeline.

Sure you can do async on command line but that's not trivial and the author doesn't address that.

jlas··on John Romero has released his first Doom level in over two decades
?

I'm late 20s and I played doom on DOS.

jlas··on Hipster Mattresses: Why?
It's also about direct sales. Similar to what Tesla is doing with cars. Traditionally consumers have bought mattresses from suppliers (Sleepys, Mattress Discounters, etc), but Casper et al are marketing and selling directly to the consumer.
jlas··on Angular 2 versus React
> You spend your time writing plain ‘ol JavaScript. That’s the future I believe in.

How about a future where you don't write any code at all? This is the beauty of Angular's markup-centric approach, it's declarative so that means less code, which means less opportunities for devs who enjoy typing to screw things up.

Jeremy Keith made a good point in his An Event Apart talk [1], where he talks about HTML slowly subsuming interactive elements (e.g. like how HTML5 adds better form type support). Angular is pushing things into this realm by helping to take code out of the picture more and more.

> which pays me a SF salary despite me living in Montreal

I'm not sure what cost of living in Montreal is, but I'd be surprised that jvns is making less than 100k in SF. If Stripe were smart they'd increase her salary stat. Just based on her excellent blog posts and her insatiable curiosity, this is not an employee you want to lose.
