jkbr··on What’s it like to have Google and Amazon try to kill your startup?
Same here. tp;dr - too pushy; didn't read
jkbr··on PyFormat – Practical examples of old and new style string formatting

    Basic formatting
    Old: '%d %d' % (1, 2)
    New: '{} {}'.format(1, 2)
It should rather be `{:d} {:d}'.format(1, 2)` but even that isn't strictly equivalent (try both styles with a float or a Decimal).
jkbr··on PyFormat – Practical examples of old and new style string formatting
%d converts the value to int first which might be useful:

    >>> '%d' % 3.14
    '3'
    >>> '%d' % 'foo'
    TypeError: %d format: a number is required, not str

A workaround is to detach the tab and keep it visible. Then it doesn't need to be focused.
jkbr··on OS X Yosemite
I can confirm that Homebrew and iTerm work fine. Your shell configs should be fine as well (unless you've made changes to /etc/bashrc, which gets overwritten).
jkbr··on Show HN: Pup – A command-line HTML parser
Happy to see this. Pup will be a nice companion to HTTPie[1] as it also works with standard streams:

    $ http example.org | pup h1 text{} | http httpbin.org/post

Already dockerized!

jkbr··on Show HN: CloudTunes
Oh, that's an interesting idea :)
jkbr··on Show HN: CloudTunes
There is a tradeoff between speed of development and degree of customizability when it comes to frameworks. With CloudTunes, I was going for a highly-customized and performant UI, and at some point it simply became easier to go back down by one layer of abstraction and build it just with Backbone instead.
jkbr··on Show HN: CloudTunes
Thanks for the tip. I actually did originally start with Chaplin. It helped me to start quickly, but later I replaced it with a very simple, custom Backbone-based MVC (Chaplin-inspired to some degree).

Btw, help with the Dockerfile would be appreciated:

jkbr··on Show HN: CloudTunes
I'd been planning on releasing it together with a Dockerfile so that people could easily run it locally in an isolated container. It turned out to be a bit more complex than I had anticipated so Docker support will come later. But I think that could be a viable model for locally-installable web apps in the future.

When I was working on the YouTube integration for CloudTunes (looong time ago), there wasn't an HTML5 <video> based API. Is there one nowadays?
jkbr··on Show HN: CloudTunes
Thanks! I'm pretty sure though that I'm not the first one nor the last one to have ever thought of that :D

The design is fluid but not really responsive. What I've been playing with is remote control that worked great on mobile devices. You were able to control all of your active CloudTunes sessions from any connected browser. So you could for instance play music on your computer, and control it via your smartphone (just like the iOS Remote app from Apple can control iTunes, except this worked over the internet so you didn't need to be on the same network). It was a very crude prototype though so I didn't include it in the initial release.

It's not running anywhere right now, sorry about that. That is because the app is not really ready for public production use. As mentioned in the README, I've kinda stopped working on it some time ago. I think it could still be interesting/useful to people who want to run in even in this state by themselves. The codebase also hopefully has some interesting bits, so I've at least opened it up for now. Another thing is that the backend talks directly to the Musicbrainz API, which is throttled (their DB is open though, so one could make a web service on top of it).

When I was looking at Google Drive API some time ago, it didn't—unlike the Dropbox API—support byte serving (partial requests). That is needed for efficient indexing of MP3 files without having to download them first. It may have since changed though. Otherwise I think it would be pretty much analogous to the Dropbox integration.
jkbr··on Show HN: CloudTunes
That currently is not possible, but wouldn't be very difficult to implement as I had it in mind from the beginning. Inspiration could be the Dropbox integration:

Client-side model:

https://github.com/jakubroztocil/cloudtunes/blob/master/clou...

API endpoint: for local files, it could simply serve the file:

https://github.com/jakubroztocil/cloudtunes/blob/master/clou...

Plus it would also need indexing, configuration, and to introduce a new media type across the app.

jkbr··on Google Analytics iOS app
Just read your blog post about it. [1] I find it amazing that it was a "20% time" project and your first iOS app. It's one of my favorite apps. Well designed and fast. Thumbs up.

jkbr··on Google Analytics iOS app
Looks like a faster and much more pleasant way to get a quick overview compared to its web counterpart. The same goes for Google's iOS app for AdSense[1], which is pretty similar UI-wise.

jkbr··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
I'm working on a plugin system for HTTPie (the user-friendly cURL replacement)[1]. It will allow things like displaying MessagePack responses, or rendering images directly in the terminal. [2]

HTTPie has just been added to Homebrew:

    $ brew install httpie
jkbr··on Python for Finance
Interesting. I've been working on a trading bot (for Bitstamp) written in Python and this comes pretty close to what I had in mind :)
jkbr··on Extend Python 2.7 life till 2020
RHEL 7 will ship with Python 2.7.5. There is no mention of Python 3 in the release notes.

jkbr··on Show HN: HackerNews as default tab (chrome extension)
Nice hack, I really see the pro-procrastination potential ;)

I find even the default tab too distracting and so one of my favourite extensions is Empty New Tab Page:

jkbr··on Improve Your Python: Metaclasses and Dynamic Classes With Type
I think the reason type is used in the last example is to have the name of the class correspond with the table name. Otherwise a regular class would suffice like you say.
