jk2323··on A Food Shortage Revealed the Cause of Celiac Disease
> toaster (obviously)

I removed the outer metal casing, put the whole thing in the dish washer. Put the metal casing back afterwards. The toaster was like brand new and worked fine.

jk2323··on A Food Shortage Revealed the Cause of Celiac Disease
This is an oversimplification of gluten problems. DH for example does not necessarily go together with small intestine causing atrophy.
jk2323··on UN: Facebook has turned into a beast in Myanmar
Does anyone here actually know how it is possible to contact Facebook's legal department? Who else could someone contact to whistle-blow something?
jk2323··on I almost lost my hearing from the lid on the tank of a toilet
In the second World War, the tank of my uncle took a full hit on the turret while fighting the Russians and he was the only survivor. Tell him about bad hearing after bleeding out of both ears. :-)
jk2323··on It's time to head back to RSS?
I never stopped using RSS. I follow a few hundred blogs (many of them have only very very few posts. Rule of thumb: The lower the post frequency, the higher the quality). I host my tinyRSS. I consider offering it to the public for free.

Here is a good RSS feed for Hackernews: http://hnrss.org/newest?points=300

Here is a service to convert a twitter feed to RSS (never really understood twitter, sorry) Example http://twitrss.me/twitter_user_to_rss/?user=Lsigurd

Here is a service to convert many RSSless websites to an RSS feed. Works soso. https://feedity.com/

EDIT: Hackernews RSS feed link was wrong

jk2323··on Zuckerberg Takes Steps to Calm Facebook Employees
Take this as a start (I know, Breitbart)

http://www.breitbart.com/london/2015/09/17/german-govt-hires...

I just read about "FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection Regarding Reported Concerns about Facebook Privacy Practices". Since I am an American citizen and was blocked for 30 days on facebook by this dubious organisation, I may actually drop the FTC an email and ask about their opinion on this.

jk2323··on Zuckerberg Takes Steps to Calm Facebook Employees
Honestly, I am not very worried about rouge data analytic companies or Russian trolls on facebook.

I am worried that questionable semi-private German entity can block me (e.g. 30 days ban) on facebook at will. I am an US citizen and don't live in Germany. This is outrageous.

jk2323··on Henley Passport Index – The number of countries holders can travel to visa-free
Actually, he is right about the Netherlands. https://ind.nl/en/dutch-citizenship/Pages/Loss-and-the-revok...
jk2323··on Henley Passport Index – The number of countries holders can travel to visa-free
Your information is incorrect because of many reasons.

1. EU and associated countries (e.g. Switzerland)? Germany does not care

2. Other countries? Give reasons, get a permit.

3. German dual citizenship law does not make any statements how many citizenship you can have.

4. There are countries that do now allow citizens to renounce, e.g. Iran.

jk2323··on Henley Passport Index – The number of countries holders can travel to visa-free
"typically it’s hard to maintain more than dual citizenship"

I am considering taking a 3rd. I am aware of some of the hurdles but out of curiosity, where do you see problems?

jk2323··on Airlines inching closer to dynamic pricing
> Whoeve

Not me. I am an Aeroflot Gold Elite status holder. They have one of the most modern fleets and customer service is pretty good in my opinion. Also the stock does well the last time I checked.

Cheapest carrier?

- They have a good hub solution via Moscow

- I assume they have cheap oil

- I assume they don't have to pay fees to fly over Russia (a pretty big country the last time I checked)

jk2323··on Our rights to EU citizenship are worth fighting for – despite Brexit
100% on.

> I can understand exceptions being made for British citizens > who have been living in the continent for many years.

As far as I know this is a given already.

> However, it hardly seems fair for all British citizens to > be granted free employment/settlement rights in EU states, > when other EU citizens aren't afforded the same rights in > Britain.

This is also obvious.

I am not sure but the article may miss the point. Having a lock at Dutch citizenship: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_nationality_law#Dual_cit...

So if you are a UK national living in the Netherlands it will be tricky to have dual citizenship. So assuming that you keep your UK citizenship your residency rights will be "grandfathered". Now a problem arises after the Brexit if such a UK national with residency in the Netherlands wants to retire in Spain - a place where he/she holds no residency rights.

jk2323··on Airlines inching closer to dynamic pricing
I often buy flights ahead 6 months.

You know one great disadvantage? Emails! "Hey customer, your flight schedule has changed, please confirm!"

jk2323··on Airlines inching closer to dynamic pricing
0% has become common (think Lufthanasa, Air India or Singapore Airlines)

Tip for the pro: Change your airline. I can recommend Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines.

jk2323··on Ubuntu 18.04 with Unity8
I always liked Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I came from SuSe Linux and was glad to get rid of the .RPM packages; still, I preferred KDE.

Recently I have become unhappy with KDE. If you like Ubuntu and want to try something new, try Bodhi Linux.

jk2323··on Why is it hard to make friends over 30? (2012)
I think you can make very good friends at any age. But

1. I have very old friends with a lot of, let's call it "weaknesses". Our friendship is "grandfathered" but if I meet new people I don't tolerate such things anymore.

2. Sometimes you meet an interesting person and would like to hang out more but things don't develop. This person never has time etc. You can also maintain only a limited amount of friends.

Also, you can easily roll up a 1 Million dollar painting in China, bring it on an airplane, fly it to Switzerland. Try bringing 1MM in cash out and in...
jk2323··on Why people collect art
Expensive art?

1. Money laundering

2. Hedge against inflation

3. Many idiots become rich. Total boring and uninteresting people. They think having a (minor) sketch from Renoir on their wall makes them interesting or special (it doesn't).

Source? Personal observation.

jk2323··on The Opium Wars Still Shape China’s View of the West
China had accumulated a lot of the world silver reserves by selling tons silk and porcelain but buying basically nothing. Selling Opium to China "solved" this problem.

Today the have the idea of exporting everything to the world and buy nothing besides a few raw materials, creating a giant trade deficit. Let's see how it ends.

jk2323··on My new favorite book of all time
""War is illegal. This idea seems obvious." Well, was has always been a privilege for countries. It is absurd that some German generals were executed after WW2 for "fighting an aggressive" war (not talking about war crimes).

Obviously the WW3 will make look WW2 like a piece of cake.

"Increasing speed of operation marked each new weapons system, particularly the decision-making function (to strike or not to strike, where, how, with what force held in reserve, at what risk, etc.), and this increasing speed also brought the incalculable factor of chance into play. Lightning-fast systems made lightning-fast mistakes. When a fraction of a second determined the safety or destruction of a region, a great metropolis, an industrial complex, or a large fleet, it was impossible to achieve military certainty. One could even say that victory had ceased to be distinguishable from defeat. In a word, the arms race was heading toward a Pyrrhic situation." 1983

jk2323··on After Surgery in Germany, I Wanted Vicodin, Not Herbal Tea
Pain is definitely undertreated in Germany (e.g. dentist).

It is overtreated in the US. I had two Surgeries in the US and was given stuff like Vicodin to take home. Never took it. Would have rated the pain 0 out of 10. But I am very pain tolerant.
