jk2323··on A 1970s Teenager's Bedroom (1998)
This guy seems to have had a nice tube amplifier. At the first look I thought he had mine:

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/N3MAAOSwLApZ3LWg/s-l300.jpg

They still sell for about 500 euros for a used one. But it is not the same. Can anyone identify the amplifier?

jk2323··on A 1970s Teenager's Bedroom (1998)
A word of caution. I looked into this and it seems extraordinary complex to design your own speakers. Even build them seems tricky.

Here is a German shop that sells kits: https://acoustic-design-online.de/de/

They had once kits to build your own electrostatic speaker (warning, high voltage, danger!): http://silberstatic.de/

jk2323··on Show HN: A search engine that doesn't track you, where users vote for results
Lordy lord. Now we don't only have to pay for links and SEO, now we also have to hire a shitload of Filipinos to up-vote sites....
jk2323··on I've spent the last two years building a new email client
Actually, there is another feature from Evolution you may want to offer for Gmail accounts.

Evolution somehow stores a cookie or can log in via webbrowser or something like that. Evolution will never get you logged out of your Gmail account (yes, I have one that I use for some things). I travel a lot and Thunderbird will always get blocked by Gmail (Please log-in via Webbrowser to confirm your identity).

jk2323··on I've spent the last two years building a new email client
Also, Gmails search function is a blast. Much worse in Thunderbird, annoying in Evolution.
jk2323··on DNA blunder creates phantom serial killer (2009)
Well, I could google some examples for you but I spare you the details. I worked for/with the police and the military in the US. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. One look at them is enough for me. (Yet, the German Army and the BKA know what they are talking about).
jk2323··on I've spent the last two years building a new email client
Well, I am curious. Seems so hard to get an email client right. I would not mind paying (GPG integration is a must).

If you don't go the mutt/alpine route, there aren't much options. Basically Thunderbird and Evolution. Never really got Clawsemail and iscribe to work with my IMAP server settings.

To make things worse, people do understand email less and less. Often, all ports except 80 and 443 are blocked and you can't even use IMAP/SMTP. And if you complain they tell you "What are you talking about? Gmail works...."

I remembered wrong out of my head. Yet, does not change my judgement about the Bavarian police. Trust me on this one.
jk2323··on EU agrees on total ban of bee-harming pesticides
I consider this good news.

May I recommend an article by Taleb:

The Precautionary Principle https://arxiv.org/pdf/1410.5787.pdf

Contrary to some of the posters here, I don't think there is STRONG evidence that neonicotinoids are causing this but there is some evidence. Bases on the Precautionary Principle it is a good idea to ban this kind of pesticides for now.

You have to know that the Bavarian police was in charge of this case. The Bavarian police is known to be incompetent extraordinaire.

It was obvious that this was an artifact. I mentioned this long time before the case was "solved". https://www.metafilter.com/73462/Onewoman-crime-spree

What is the biggest achievement of the Bavarian police? Being so incompetent in the 72 olympics so that the GSG9 special forces were created.

jk2323··on A rundown of the new Gmail
I live in China. This could be an IP thing or something.

On my Android k9 client I never got sendmail to work with informaniak.

jk2323··on A Lengthy, Pedantic Review of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)
Never liked GNome, unity, settled for Kubuntu. After KDE started annoying me, I use Bodhi Linux https://www.bodhilinux.com
jk2323··on A rundown of the new Gmail
I use both.

Informaniak has decent webmail. IMAP is okay, didn't get SMTP to work with k9 android email client. I don't have my domain with them, I buy email/IMAP as a service. I think it is 17 Euros per year.

gandi's IMAP seems more robust.

jk2323··on Startup School Beijing
"If you are a foreigner working for a domestic startup, you simply aren’t allowed to have equity."

This can't be true since you can have equity in a company. Start-up or not. An IPO may be a different thing because a regular foreigner can't hold A-Shares. If (big if) he holds a Chinese green card then even this is allowed.

jk2323··on Startup School Beijing
Because Beijing is the best city in China. Shanghai is for people who don't like China.

By the way, never fuck with anyone with money in Shanghai. There is always somebody with more money than you. Never fuck with anyone with power in Bejing....

jk2323··on Startup School Beijing
chinalawblog.com is a good source, but I know foreigners who made 7 figures with stock options in China.

Also, a western buddy of mine co-runs a VC fund. Many of the China based start-ups have western equity holders. Something is missing here.

jk2323··on A rundown of the new Gmail
What is good about Gmail? Imap is a nightmare if you travel a lot (Please log-in via Browser), it is a privacy nightmare..If you forget your password, who can you call? What is good about it? Okay, it is free and has the best "search" option.

You can get a domain with Webmail and IMAP for a few bucks.

Yeah. Another reason for being an organ donor. Remember, even when you are dead, you best friend could still be working :-)
jk2323··on Quantum radar will expose stealth aircraft
An opinionated post about another quantum radar:

Chinese "quantum radar" is a thing that cannot exist https://motls.blogspot.com/2017/03/chinese-quantum-radar-is-...

jk2323··on Experts say Tesla has repeated car industry mistakes from the 1980s
"Anyone who has had to do with the manufacturing side of car makers (German ones anyway) knows how highly optimized from end-to-end their processes are."

You can buy this knowledge.

jk2323··on The case for hydrogen-powered cars
> Since pure battery electrics will always have lower operating costs (if the hydrogen is produced from electricity and not oil/gas)

There are other options. You can producte H2 directly from sunlight. https://setis.ec.europa.eu/setis-reports/setis-magazine/fuel...

And we might run out of Lithium. Or Cobalt. Or Vanadium. I doubt that we run out of Hydrogen.

What helps protect you from this?

Ghostery? uBlock? a decent hosts file?

jk2323··on What Data Does Facebook Collect When I’m Not Using Facebook, and Why?
"When you load up your site with a host of sharing buttons you're – unwittingly perhaps – enabling those companies to track your visitors, whether they use the buttons and their accompanying social networks or not" [1]."

This can be prevented and in fact, may have to be prevented with the new EU privacy law.

Here is a wordpress plug-in that helps to protect the privacy of your users and helps comply with the new law:

https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/shariff-sharing/

It basically requires you to activate the social buttons first with a click.

jk2323··on Why Entrepreneurs Start Companies Rather Than Join Them

Sounds reasonable. I would start wondering if they claim 20 Billion users, but hey, you never now.

jk2323··on Bulgaria played a vital role in introducing yogurt to the West
Should anyone be interested in making yogurt with Bulgarian cultures, they are available on ebay:

US: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bulgarian-Starter-Kultur-fur-Tradit...

EU: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Bulgarische-Joghurt-Starterkultur-na...

I make Kefir myself with a culture that I once acquired on ebay. May try to make Bulgarian yogurt one day.

jk2323··on Pentagon halts F-35 deliveries over contractual dispute
This is up for debate:

"But while F-22 pilots are confident about the Raptor’s ability to defeat the S-300V4 and the S-400, the Air Force official acknowledged that the stealthy fifth-generation aircraft has never faced off against these next-generation Russian air defenses in actual combat before."

I would not bet my life on it that a current S-400 can't blow an F-35 out of the sky. And considering the Russian habit ob hiding or understating technology, in combination with old Soviet thinking stratagems like the "axe theory", I would say: good luck!
