jjuel··on Cloudmacs: access your Emacs in browser
Does this require Docker on the local machine or the remote machine? If it requires it on the local this seems like a non-starter still for a lot of people. If I can't ssh from that machine what are the odds it has Docker or I can install Docker?
jjuel··on Rxdb: A reactive database where you can subscribe to the result of a query
The community has taken it over as far as I know. Looking at the github there appears to be some active development still. https://github.com/rethinkdb/rethinkdb
jjuel··on Data as a Property Right
How is the right to be forgotten unconstitutional? I would think me being able to have my data deleted upon my request wouldn't necessarily infringe on my own freedoms, but I could be wrong.
jjuel··on Broken
I mean Windows 10 May 2019 release was "deemed safe" only at the end of September. It is no surprise. Companies push to meet deadlines which in turn results in buggy releases. It happens in video games quite a bit too where the full release is nothing more than a buggy beta for a few months.
jjuel··on NBA's China dilemma: $4B at risk as Chinese TV cancels game broadcasts
Isn't it easy for you to say when you risk losing nothing on this matter? If your business were about to lose a big and growing market wouldn't you do all you could to keep that market happy whether you agree with them or not? If not my guess is your business wouldn't last very long.
jjuel··on Asciicker – an online 3D game demo rendering to ASCII text
Am I the only one who can't help but see it as Ascii Licker?
jjuel··on Walking Truck
Yeah if they didn't have to go very far...

> It was exhausting to control and, according to program lead Ralph Mosher who was the designer and primary driver, operators could only drive the walking truck for a limited time.

jjuel··on The beauty of functional languages in deep learning – Clojure and Haskell
Beauty: "a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight."

So I cannot like the shape or form when I look at a proof or function? I cannot have my aesthetic senses pleased by looking at STEM field things?

jjuel··on Stop Infinite Scrolling
This. These sites don't use infinite scrolling because it is a great user experience they do it to keep people on their site. They do it to keep people engaged. The addiction. Most of those sites would actually be better with pages in terms of user experience, but that isn't the experience they are going for.
jjuel··on A Gambler Who Cracked the Horse-Racing Code (2018)
Sports interests me more. I would rather spend time looking at sports analytics than Wall Street analytics.
jjuel··on A Gambler Who Cracked the Horse-Racing Code (2018)
I know there is at least one person interested in sports analytics for financial gain here ;)
jjuel··on Microsoft Edge preview builds are ready to try
What about Brave?
jjuel··on Fork: A fast and friendly Git client for Mac and Windows
Aren't all the other ones you mention closed source as well? Like Kraken and SourceTree for sure.
jjuel··on History Will Not Be Kind to Jony Ive
I tend to think the opposite. When you think of design you think of Apple (which in turn means Jony Ive). Whether or not they cause some functional issues doesn't matter. The market has spoken and they love the sleek design that this man has come up with. If it weren't true people wouldn't be all out copying the designs of Apple. I think history will look favorably on him, and pretty much forget the functional issues (whether real or just perceived) his designs caused.
jjuel··on A map of the US where city names are replaced by most Wikipedia’ed resident
I mean that probably proves he is Wiki'ed much more than John Elway. Mostly a recency thing I would guess.
jjuel··on Data Is Plural – Structured Archive
Shouldn't it be 'Data are plural' then?
jjuel··on Show HN: Turn an Excel file into a web application
So 4 million G Suite business customers and 70 million educational G Suite customers is outside the core business? I would say 74 million customers is a major part of any business.
jjuel··on Show HN: Turn an Excel file into a web application
And what happens if Keikai fails long before Google gets rid of sheets? I get that Google has a habit of killing things off, but they are often things that are unpopular. Sheets is far from unpopular.
jjuel··on Windows gets a new terminal
This is what I am wondering. Hopefully it isn't just in the preview Windows build. Although that is what I am guessing.
jjuel··on I made a smart watch from scratch
I purchased an Amazfit Stratos around 6 months ago. This thing is better than any other smart watch I have owned (Pebble, Moto360, Apple Watch). Always on screen. Multiple days worth of battery. Best workout tracking I have had on a watch. And it does all the notification and smart watch type things I expect. I am not certain why Apple, Samsung, et al haven't figured these things out yet, but other companies have and it is great. Oh let's not forget this only cost me $150.
jjuel··on Can your employer fire you after you quit?
So wait this person was going to quit, but then got fired. So after getting fired they receive unemployment benefits which they would not have received otherwise (obviously they would have gotten fully paid for 60 days). But now are mad that the unemployment isn't lasting past the 60 days (in which after 60 days fired or resigned they wouldn't have gotten anything anyway). I guess I just don't understand what this plan was. Were they hoping to just milk out 60 more days worth of pay, and then travel or something. It appears there was no plan of a new postition lined up at all.

So we may not be getting a whole story here and I would like to know the whole story. Sure it seems bad by the employer, but we still are unsure of what the employee was planning here either. Maybe after 2 days of working after giving 60 days they weren't performing their duties anymore so they fired them. They could have been just hoping to get 2 months worth of pay, but been not expected to do anything since they were leaving. I can't make any assumptions, but without a full story this is impossible to judge who is truly in the wrong.

I actually once put in two weeks for a job, and then later when the CTO found out he said they didn't accept and I was asked to leave before 2 weeks. I, however, never thought of that as being fired, and I was leaving for a better position so it was no skin off my back. I just got a break between jobs I may not have had before.

jjuel··on Python in Visual Studio Code – April 2019 Release
Yeah never said it was a bad thing. I love VSCode and I like Visual Studio. I wish VSCode could replace Visual Studio for my current work, but I don't think it works well with .NET Framework solutions yet (and may never will).
jjuel··on Python in Visual Studio Code – April 2019 Release
Microsoft is doing a good job of turning VSCode into Visual Studio. This is far from a basic text editor anymore.
jjuel··on Warren’s Higher Education Plan: Cancel Student Debt and Eliminate Tuition
When have you seen taxes on the wealthy actually work or even pass the House or Senate? Again good in theory, but not good in practice. All that is going to do is get the ultra wealthy and corporations to use more loopholes than they already do. Again it is a great talking point, but not something that is realistic. But it'll get all of the people hampered by tuition and student debt to say "yeah stick it to them". I personally still have loads of debt and would be nice to get rid of. Would be nice to see my son be able to go to a public university for free. However, the logistics of it will make it never happen. In fact it would probably affect public universities, and the quality would decline more than it is now.
jjuel··on Warren’s Higher Education Plan: Cancel Student Debt and Eliminate Tuition
So instead of me directly paying just for my own education I would have to pay for everyone else's education in the form of taxes? Freeing up what I am currently paying for student loans would be nice, but if you take more money from me to subsidize ALL public colleges am I really gaining anything? Sure this is a good talking point for her and the progressive left, but realistically it isn't a feasible plan.
jjuel··on Ruby's Creed
I don't program in Ruby and never really have, but there is one thing I know dealing with plenty of legacy code: Temporary code is almost always permanent.
jjuel··on I Built a Lisp Compiler
Well it says they didn't discover MAL until 2018 after they'd been working on creating compilers for quite a few years. So yes their implementation of MAL wasn't 10 years long. And they also wrote an interpreter in Rust and then a compiler in C in the time after discovering MAL. Safe to say the MAL portion takes quite a bit less than 10 years.
jjuel··on Firefox Lockbox – Take your passwords everywhere
They make a mobile browser too so why make this app?
jjuel··on How I'm able to take notes in mathematics lectures using LaTeX and Vim
Don't you think you could be an edge case too where you went back and studied extra and experimented? Very few college students I know actually did anything like this, and I know I didn't. Obviously it would have helped, but I did not do that then.
jjuel··on Show HN: Applying Machine Learning to March Madness
I mean do you really think NCAA basketball games are just a random coin toss? If that were the case wouldn't more than 1 16 seed have won a game? Wouldn't more lower seeds have won the whole tournament? In that case theoretically every team has the same chance to win it all yet the lowest seed ever to win was an 8 seed.
