jjeaff··on Routine dental X-rays are not backed by evidence
I actually don't see how universal health care would help in this situation. Bad actors are going to try and milk whatever system pays the bills. Capitalism "should" be pretty good at taking care of this kind of stuff. I'm not sure why insurance companies aren't better at reining in these kind of abuses.
jjeaff··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Skinny fat is not nearly as metabolically unhealthy as fat fat.
jjeaff··on What is "founder mode"?
I'm kind of surprised it is not still the norm. Apple, Google, MSFT have all done quite well with their non-founder leadership.
jjeaff··on FTX creditors will make money on bankruptcy
Does it not also have to do with the increased value of some of the other assets FTX bought? I believe SBF invested a large amount in some AI companies.
jjeaff··on Juno for YouTube has been removed from the App Store
there are like 12 of those already.
jjeaff··on Juno for YouTube has been removed from the App Store
I haven't read that article yet. But it has become extremely hard not to build in someone else's kingdom. Just ask Facebook or Uber or various other unicorns.
jjeaff··on Show HN: I've Built an Accounting System
Except every company needs accountants. Only software companies need developers. There are roughly the same number of accounting jobs in the US as developer jobs. So it may just be due to a lack of software developers that cause the higher pay for developers. Although, outside of FAANG and similar software companies, my guess is that CPAs make more.
jjeaff··on Julia Child's Kitchens
Pepín is an excellent chef to learn from. Because most of his recipes focus on technique and simplicity rather than recipe and seasoning. One of the biggest mistakes that I think people make is just not cooking things to the correct doneness at the right temperatures and times. Often people think that a fancy mix of spices and seasonings is what is important. I grew up not liking chicken or pork or steak unless it was in something because I had never had perfectly cooked chicken, pork chops, or steaks it was always cooked to well done and so dry you needed steak sauce. My parents grew up in an era where everyone feared undercooked meat. especially pork. And it's such a shame because I grew up on a cattle ranch. We would butcher a cow for ourselves every year. Grass fed, but lean, and butcher to thin steaks because you can cook them to saw dust a lot quicker that way. Now, I get beef from the ranch after fattening and have it butchered to steaks at least an inch thick and I always cook with a thermometer and usually just salt. A well done vs medium rare steak is such a night and day difference. Same with pork and chicken, although I prefer them both a little closer to medium.
jjeaff··on Parents Should Ignore Their Children More Often
Exactly, many neighborhoods today aren't even very conducive to visiting a neighbor. We are fortunate to live in a place where the homes are very close together and can be accessed without crossing busy streets. we have several neighbors with similarly aged kids and they can go play with each other all the time. personally, I would love to move to an estate property with a private fence and gate. but I really love that my kids can have some independence moving between the homes and playing nearby in the neighborhood.
jjeaff··on Roche data shows stomach-churning side effects of weight-loss drugs
it's not until the middle of the article that they detail that the side effects are mostly seen on the highest dose of the drug and that it isn't out of line with the rate of negative side effects of similar competitor drugs.
jjeaff··on The Tippy Type makes typing with long nails less tedious
I assume that they were angling their fingers in a way to still press with the pads of their fingers? At first I imagined using the tips of their nails, but it seems like it would be difficult to learn using the tips since the length and angle of the nails would frequently change.
jjeaff··on Don't Take Advice from a Habsburg
We have a lot of those today. We just call them Landlords.
jjeaff··on 20% more powerful perovskite solar panels enter commercial use
Mounting system doesn't have to be very expensive. But the mounting labor is. Which is why the mounting hardware does end up costing a lot, because anything to save labor time is usually a good tradeoff.
jjeaff··on The Texas Billionaire Who Has Greenpeace USA on the Verge of Bankruptcy
No need to risk an unfavorable jury now. You just judge shop by going to a district with a single crooked judge like in Amarillo.
jjeaff··on Twitter Runs on Hate – But Its Users Don't Reflect Real Life
there is certainly no oligopoly over ALL products and services that can be advertised for. that's just nonsense talking points from musk, who is trying to excuse the toxic mess he has made of Twitter.
jjeaff··on The first nuclear clock will test if fundamental constants change
this is a bit tangential, but I once had a physics professor describe light waves as standing still and everything else is just moving around it.
jjeaff··on Home Assistant Presence Simulation
I'm guessing you have to do a bit more in maintenance for your Home Assistant instance than set the clock every once and a while?
jjeaff··on Just use fucking paper, man
You've never lost your wallet or your keys?
jjeaff··on Why is the Oral-B iOS app almost 300 MB? And why is Colgate's app even bigger..?
Influencing? Ya, that's the point, influencing them to have good behaviors. Do you reward your children with broccoli?
jjeaff··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
Ignore them at your own peril. That was a particularly bad poll in a particularly weird race. Most good polls have been pretty accurate.
jjeaff··on Starlink will provide free global cellular emergency services access (e.g. 911)
Ya, but also less ongoing costs. Which is why it was viable, especially after bankruptcy, since they could erase all that initial capital expenditure.
jjeaff··on Stripe Data vs. Open‐Source Alternatives: A MRR Example
Regardless of how you do your accounting, MRR is always an accrual basis. Someone who pays $10 monthly increases your MRR by $10. Someone else who pays $100 annually increases your MRR by $100/12.
jjeaff··on Stripe Data vs. Open‐Source Alternatives: A MRR Example
I don't think it's quite so subjective. At least, the edge cases you bring up would not significantly affect your metrics no matter how you handled them. MRR is a metric used for strategic planning and evaluation, it doesn't have to be exact, it's not going on your tax submissions.

You usually track MRR based on users who are currently paying for your service (summing recurring subscription amounts, as you put it). Whether their payment falls at the end of the month or is delayed a day to the next month doesn't affect MRR. Most subscriptions must be paid before the billing period begins.

Things like cancellations or chargebacks are counted separately and would not affect past MRR calculations. No you never count free trials. Yes, you count people who have a credit or balance assuming they overpaid to get that balance. If it was just given as a comp, then no.

Yes, you count people who are set to expire until they actually expire and don't renew.

jjeaff··on Stripe Data vs. Open‐Source Alternatives: A MRR Example
I see no reason why one wouldn't self host this. Subscription and billing data is such a crucial part of any business, I'm surprised more don't handle it internally.
jjeaff··on Stripe Data vs. Open‐Source Alternatives: A MRR Example
My interpretation of backfilling here is that they need to architect the data in a different way to be able to have all the information needed to calculate the MRR correctly. Then once the data is modelled how they need it, they have to backfill the new model. Basically like your export to csv step. I'm sure the data that fills your csv export is coming in from a dozen different tables and sources.
jjeaff··on Starlink will provide free global cellular emergency services access (e.g. 911)
Starlink Leo satellites are not the same as geosynchronous satellites. geosync satellites are very high up and will more or less stay there indefinitely. Starlink sats will decay from their orbit and burn up in the atmosphere after about 5 years. which means if you aren't constantly launching new sats all the time, the network will quickly degrade and completely fail within five years. in other words, there is way more than a zero percent chance that starlink is not a financially viable product long term.
jjeaff··on Knockknock: Simple, secure, and stealthy port knocking implementation (2012)
I also love tailscale's ssh option. I have been using it for a few months now. But I'm a little bit scared that if the tailscale daemon crashes, I'll lose access to my server.
jjeaff··on Knockknock: Simple, secure, and stealthy port knocking implementation (2012)
It can be difficult to pass some PCI compliance tests if your ssh port is available to the world. OpenSSH also leaks some information about your server unless you recompile it with those options removed.
jjeaff··on Tattoo ink sold on Amazon has high levels of weird and rare bacteria
Brand owners can apply to have their brands sold only by themselves. I think it might not stop others from selling used, but it would stop the new listings.
jjeaff··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
What polls have trump in the lead in the swing states right now? I haven't seen any high power polls that have trump in an obvious lead.
