jjcon··on Amazon to Lay Off over 17,000 Workers, More Than First Planned
Most of the tech companies are letting a mix of recent hires, corporate middle management and in amazon’s case some logistics warehouse workers and specialty project engineers were let go. It’s a pretty eclectic, diverse group of people so its not as hard as it sounds to reabsorb into other companies. If they were all engineers or all HR there might be issues but in an already over-employed economy already 17k jobs won’t even make a dent in just about any sector right now.
jjcon··on LineageOS 20
I’m curious about this as well. Are these packages open source as well? I’d love to peruse the camerax code -

edit - someone else linked it: https://github.com/LineageOS/android_packages_apps_Aperture

jjcon··on Archaeologists devise a better clock for Biblical times
Your entire post history is obsessed with criticizing Jews and Israel - you can shroud your antisemitism as “just politics bro” but it’s not a good look regardless. HN isn’t the place to peddle your hate.
jjcon··on Vandals destroy 30k-year-old indigenous cave drawings in Australia
I guess they just have to wait a couple thousand years for the graffiti to be a piece of history too.
jjcon··on The antimicrobial resistance crisis needs action now
Does it work that way? I didn’t think so. Or did he mean in the proverbial, if we overuse them we won’t have them for anyone in 30 years?
jjcon··on AI chatbots are not a replacement for search engines
I mean, it happens in stages - I’m already using chatgpt for plenty of useful tasks that I would otherwise google (and then some). Similarly self driving cars are better than humans at plenty of specific things (collision detection/aversion for instance) but not a wholesale replacement of humans just yet obviously.
jjcon··on Cannabis is legal in most US states but federal laws block businesses from banks
Not to nitpick but technically only thc is illegal federally and only in certain quantities- you can legally buy some cannabis products like cbd oil federally. In most states the rest is effectively legal even if the federal government says no but technically you are correct there.
jjcon··on Ask HN: Help – Locked out of 10 years Gmail account
Interesting - took my account three years to let me back in. Was happy it finally did though
jjcon··on Ask HN: Help – Locked out of 10 years Gmail account
This happened to me - I even had access to my recovery mail but google just decided I wasn’t trusted back in my account after I moved to a new country. I contacted every support line I could but alas.

About 3 years later I was magically let back in, no idea why but I would try every few months and it just worked one day. Hope it doesn’t take that long for you.

jjcon··on ChatGPT is a ‘code red’ for Google’s search business
Have you had many conversations with it? For me it took an hour before I found it saying anything particularly wrong and even then it was more subtle than the above.
jjcon··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
> What level of rape/murder is acceptable from criminals who have not yet been charged with a crime?

Huh? What are you talking about? You don’t even get a bail hearing unless you've already been charged with a crime.

jjcon··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
Uhhh… what? So what level of rape/murder is appropriate/acceptable for criminals out on bail to commit, statistically speaking of course?

I’m pretty sure the rest of us think it should be 0… but maybe that is just me. 3 notable examples in the last 6 months in one area… not zero… not anywhere close.

jjcon··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
> advanced cruise control functionality comparable to AP

No… not at all comparable. Not even close. Advanced cruise control doesn’t navigate you anywhere it only assists a driver by keeping them centered in the lane or keeping pace with the car ahead of them. Telsa has this too, and it is not the same thing as autopilot. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

jjcon··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
I don’t know any poor folks that have had a $250 million dollar bail. Bail for first time offenders ranges from $500-$2500. It is just collateral, you don’t actually pay it if that wasn’t clear. If you can’t temporarily post bond there are 100s of companies out there that will post for you for a small fee (fractions of your actual bond). Is it perfectly fair? No, but I don’t think it is a terrible system either.

Generally for first time offenders that are not a threat to society and unlikely to skip court, bail is waived altogether.

jjcon··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
I imagine Tesla has more than 19x the self-driving miles of every other automaker in the world combined too.
jjcon··on In Kyrgyzstan it’s common to kidnap your future wife
Reproducing is biologically hardwired into us. That doesn’t make it alright to judge people who either can’t or choose not to but I also don’t think we are going to change something so core to our biology any time soon, and yes a part of that is the judgement that may come along with it. Doesn’t hurt to try though.
jjcon··on In Kyrgyzstan it’s common to kidnap your future wife
I don’t think it is 100% society as much as it is biology that has shaped that ideology
jjcon··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
Wouldn’t we if we had some prehistoric people in ice and had the technology? The whole world would want to watch.
jjcon··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
Genuinely curious for your perspective- can you elaborate?
jjcon··on Ask HN: Why aim for reducing climate change?
10 meters is still way too much - have another look at your own source - we’re talking an extra meter at best over typical highs - again nowhere near 10m even with the worst case meter of rise in the next 100 years.
jjcon··on Ask HN: Why aim for reducing climate change?
10 meters? Are you serious? The current WORST case scenarios as modeled by the IPCC would put us on track for about 1 meter of rise by 2100 and <4 meters of rise by 2300 (with confidence interval going as high as 5), 280 years from now. Models aren’t accounting for 10 meters because nobody with credentials is forecasting 10 meters of rise even in worst case scenarios. This model in question here is only concerned with the upcoming 100 years, and we 100% will not be seeing even multi-meter rises by then let alone 10.

> By 2300, seas could stand as much as 5 meters higher under the worst-case scenario.

jjcon··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
People did the same with GANs years ago with similar odd results. I do think the kinks will eventually be ironed out but i don’t think this is it.
jjcon··on Waymo's collision avoidance testing
Answer: The passenger… now can be move on from this inane argument? If they are safer than humans it frankly doesn’t even matter.
jjcon··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
Interesting I've experienced this too though interestingly it is way more noticeable for me with beyond than impossible. I get a weird after taste for hours and my stomach feels off. Not bad enough to never eat again but noticeable enough that I tend to avoid beyond in particular now. Some people have suggested it is so close to meat that your stomach just isn't used to it but I'm pescatarian and eat fish fairly regularly so I doubt it is that simple.
jjcon··on A hundred UK companies sign up for four-day week with no loss of pay
I guess I'd rather live on a planet where most people didn't have to work like their life was in dire jeopardy all the time...
jjcon··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
And yet after asking repeatedly nobody can provide me a source where they have changed their minds after the fact about the first booster
jjcon··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
That is still recommending boosters 18+ though, its only clarifying for additional doses beyond 3rd doses - they didn't change their recommendation for boosters after the fact.
jjcon··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
> They stopped recommending further boosters to younger people after the 1st booster.

Which country(s) specifically changed their guidance about boosters after the 1st booster was released? Again I'm not aware of large swings in policy in most of these countries. Some aren't recommending 4th doses yet but I don't think any have changed policies about boosters after the fact.

jjcon··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
I'm seeing 72.4 from your source (last updated just over a month ago) vs 74% from the NYT. I'm guessing your source is just slightly older?

+1.6% in the past month seems reasonable to me

jjcon··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
> Is that counting the 1st booster? These policy changes came after the 1st booster.

Yes it is counting any booster after primary 2 doses - which policy changes specifically? Most of these countries have been relatively consistent in their approach to boosters.
