jjaredsimpson··on MIT IQ: The MIT Intelligence Quest
I'll take a crack. Progress in ML applications to previously intractable problems has created an irrational optimism that AGI is on the near term horizon.

I'm not aware of any novel abstraction which led to a solution to these intractable problems. The problems became tractable because of silicon and incremental algorithm improvements.

This is another way of saying, yeah intractable problems are being made tractable, but these problems aren't stepping stones to AGI.

jjaredsimpson··on Ask HN: What's the most underrated programming language?
Haskell was the first language I learned that I actually loved in an irrational way. I consider myself to be a 3/10 haskeller because I've written a couple thousands lines, but never built anything "real" with it. But it is just such a beautiful experience to be writing it. It feels very much like a pit of success.
jjaredsimpson··on The Era of Quantum Computing Is Here. Outlook: Cloudy
But now you have to demonstrate that your analogy holds.
jjaredsimpson··on Facebook invented a new time unit called the ‘flick’ and it’s truly amazing
Least common multiples are amazing tech now.
jjaredsimpson··on Consciousness: Where Are Words?
Consciousness is: what it is like to experience something. Note this is different from self consciousness which is: what is it like to be something which experiences and know you are that thing.

Humans are certainly self conscious. Crabs are certainly conscious. Crystals certainly exist.

Where the boundaries are is an interesting question, but the categories certainly exist even if I can't draw a clean boundary around members.

jjaredsimpson··on A different view on Functional Programming
Example please? Because I'm tempted to respond that there are no inherently messy problems, only insufficient solutions.

What problem could possibly exist that only could be implemented in a convoluted way?

Sounds more like: me and my team made trade offs that were, in retrospect, bad and now we don't know how to transform our code into a new program will fulfills the same requirements but is easier to inspect and understand.

jjaredsimpson··on Britain is, and was, deluded about its negotiating power with the EU
This isn't a real argument. What if you agreed to buy slaves from a foreign person?

Governments obviously have a real interest in what their citizen do regardless of where that activity takes place.

jjaredsimpson··on The Bitcoin Whales: 1,000 People Who Own 40 Percent of the Market
Also since a large number of coins are lost the 40% number understates the size of the whales. Estimates are that 20% of coins are simply lost for good.
jjaredsimpson··on A Reply to François Chollet on Intelligence Explosion
It's the first term of the Maclaurin series

sin(x) = sin(0) + cos(1)x = 0 + x

jjaredsimpson··on Cinemark announces $8.99/mo. subscription to fill more seats, take on MoviePass
Value proposition on theaters is very low.

The popcorn isn't even good. I want butter and salt evenly distributed throughout the entire bucket, not a disgustingly over seasoning top inch, and a bland inedible bottom 90%.

The cheapest matinee is a Tuesday 5.75 about 20m from me. It's just not worth it at all. Serialized dramas that I binge watch are killing movies. Attention economy continues to forces changes in old media.

jjaredsimpson··on Portugal’s radical drug policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?
Policy shouldn't be optimized to address these outlier events. Knife wielding maniacs aren't a real problem. Spousal abuse and suicide are.
jjaredsimpson··on How Jet Built a GPU-Powered Fulfillment Engine with F# and CUDA
I'm an intermediate Haskeller and I just started playing around with F# around 2 months ago.

I really like it. It still feels very functional but has escape hatches when I want imperative behavior.

I like that I can still write "beautiful" code which feels high level and is expressed in the language of the problem domain, yet can fall back on idiomatic imperative solutions for certain tight loops or data structures.

F# still feels like a toy sometimes but that might only be cause C# is so polished.

It also supports DSC[1]. Visually lossless is defined as indistinguishable difference between A/B of predetermined challenging images. You can check the images they used and run the test yourself if you so desire.

jjaredsimpson··on Ask HN: Some examples of parallel but not concurrent processing
Vector addition in floating point registers is parallel but not concurrent.

Parallel means division of a task into separate parts which execute at the same instant in time.

Concurrent means separate task with overlapping lifetimes.

Parallel is contrasted with single threads of execution. And concurrent should be contrasted with serialization of task lifetimes.

jjaredsimpson··on What AlphaGo Zero teaches us about what’s going wrong with innovation
Criticism of the -- what I believe to be -- inevitable post-work post-scarcity economy is rooted in the false idea that employment provides meaning to those employed.

But proclaiming the "Value of Work" is just arguing for the "Merits of Drudgery."

I can't wait to not work ever again. The weak reply that, "doctors have valuable employment that gives them meaning," is completely beside the point. Doctors like helping people or the challenge of solving an ailment or they like the high status of being a doctor in society or the high pay.

But they don't like paperwork, or interacting with insurance companies. Most work is like that. Low status, repetitive, boring, meaningless. Trading the best hours of the day of the best years of your youth is a terrible bargain, but persists because it is connected to survival and status.

Break the connection and humanity prospers.

jjaredsimpson··on How Julian Jaynes’ consciousness theory is faring in the neuroscience age (2015)
Not really. A theory is useful if it makes accurate predictions and explains phenomena in the domain to which it applies.

Theories in physics has always been useful even though they are incomplete to this day.

jjaredsimpson··on The Intel Optane SSD 900P 280G Review
Booting Windows and loading games is full of large sequential reads using high queue depths. This is something ssd controller can optimize well already.

Average consumers don't need this. Enthusiast gamers don't need this. This is enterprise hardware rebranded for consumers.

jjaredsimpson··on Dynamic Progamming: First Principles
Exactly. Memorization is the process of committing something to memory. Things like spaced repetition, flashcards, using mnemonics, etc. Memoization is the technique of caching expensive function calls and returning those cached values upon subsequent invocations.

Seeing the word memorize implies a process that an actor is undergoing and says nothing about the data being memorized. Seeing the word memoize implies the existence of an expensive function and implies a process of repeated calls to the function. It also implies the function is pure, i.e. you can't memoize calls to fread().

jjaredsimpson··on The Mathematics of Inequality
When voters elect representatives to move money from the wealthy to themselves it is theft.

When wealthy donors, lobbyists, and corporations pour money into the political system to affect laws, distribution, incentives, outcomes it is "speech."

If life isn't fair, then why do you care about something you call theft? I'm not reading a self-consistent critique here.

jjaredsimpson··on What Is Climate Change
I don't see what purpose this kind of "journalism" serves. Anyone with an level of interest and scientific literacy can read the IPCC summary report and get all the details they can handle. Next you could simple head over to wikipedia and read the article on climate change.

This article adds nothing of value. It doesn't inform the interested, and won't persuade deniers.

jjaredsimpson··on Wilson’s Algorithm

jjaredsimpson··on C++17 is formally approved
nit: Aren't pointer arguments also pass by value? The data is the memory address not the underlying pointed-to object.
jjaredsimpson··on Recognizing when two arithmetic expressions are essentially the same
For sure, only commenting that for that particular problem, brute force is viable. For many problems brute force is not viable.

I was grinding PE a couple years ago to pick up Haskell.

jjaredsimpson··on Recognizing when two arithmetic expressions are essentially the same
That problem is small enough to just brute force. There are only 1612800 calculations to do.
jjaredsimpson··on Battery breakthrough could change everything
To charge an 85 kWh in 5 minutes would be ~1MW which seems beyond home charging capacity.

Even more out of reach if you want to double the capacity

jjaredsimpson··on Dark Matter May Be Trapped in All the Black Holes
>If my points are wrong

It's your job to not be wrong about knowable things. Read a summary of the literature if you are actually interested instead of just proposing that a well accepted theory is wrong because "theoreticians" are biased.

jjaredsimpson··on Government Report Finds Drastic Impact of Climate Change on U.S
Human contribution to climate change isn't questionable it is nearly certain (>95% chance).

Recent decades are likely the warmest in 1500 years. What data opposes this view?

jjaredsimpson··on Facebook Is Working on a Video Chat Device

jjaredsimpson··on [dead]
Unqualified novice seeks high office. We've seen this before.

Fluff interview with no reason given to vote for or against. Didn't even mention what district she would be running in, who holds that seat right now, gathering staff, gathering donors.

Really pointless.
