jiscariot··on The State of Vim
Google translate says vim = 'I came' in portuguese, so I guess that explains Brazil.
jiscariot··on The Anti-Social Century
There is a lot in this piece, but one of the things mentioned was public spaces.

While it likely doesn't play a huge role, it can't be ignored that the last ten or so years in the US, public spaces have generally deteriorated due to the lack of enforcement of quality-of-life laws, and general absence of social norms. If your government decides to allow tent cities (everything that comes with that) in your local park, people of means will take their kids to SkyZone. When public transportation becomes unsafe, people of means will opt to rideshare. It points to a failure in leadership of many large US cities. Hopefully that changes.

jiscariot··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
My issue is the metrics constantly parroted to show inequality wouldn't (shouldn't) stand muster to an Econ 101 student.

- Household income disparities between groups, without controlling for household makeup. There are vast differences between racial groups in regard to one vs. two parent households (+/-30% between white/black). It should not be controversial, that two income earners, create larger household incomes (or reduce need for expensive childcare).

- Income disparities, without controlling for age or time in workforce. White populations in US average about 14yrs older than non-white. It should not be controversial, that people tend to make more money the longer they have been in the workforce (via raises, promotions, etc).

- 74 cents on the dollar between sexes. Hopefully this one doesn't need an explanation in 2025.

- Achievement gaps. High achievers throw these numbers off (vs. US average), hence, the killing of many advanced placement programs. The other one I see where I live, is more ironic than bad data--people bemoan the growth of the achievement gap yet don't see the connection to the consistent yearly refuge resettlements of thousands of ESL Somalis in the same schools.

Many of these missteps are so blatant, I can't take anyone using them seriously and throw the baby out with the bathwater.

jiscariot··on Show HN: Boulette - Protect you from yourself (even as root).
I'm always running in tmux panes so often iterm and those settings seem to conflict. It would be great to go a step further and include a background color change--will have to give it another shot. Thanks for the tip.
jiscariot··on Show HN: Boulette - Protect you from yourself (even as root).
For me, what is more common is the likelihood of doing something in the wrong environment (e.g. lab, dev, stage, prod). To help make things a bit more clear, our images now override the PS1 with a `(environment)` at the beginning, which is a different color, lab=green, dev=purple, prod=red. If it saves me once, it was worth it.
jiscariot··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2024?
I liked Recursion and Dark Matter a lot, but the last two pages of Upgrade really left it on a poor note for me.
jiscariot··on The trap of "I am not an extrovert"
> He said, with a smirk, “I am not an extrovert”.

In this likely fabricated scenario, our initial introduction to the introvert has them also coming across as a dick.

jiscariot··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
New York Times market cap drops 12% based on people now actually being able to cancel their subscriptions. j/k
jiscariot··on Sweden will offer migrants $34k to go home
And the no-go zones were just fox news right-wing propaganda. Well, my Swedish friend drove me through one (daytime) two years ago.

Pretty significant cultural changes, like now in their hometown, there are separate swimming days for the sexes at the public pool. When I started going to Sweden 30 years ago, all the beaches were top-ional.

Things like, I think he called them the "bearded babies", which was a group of thousands of refugees who were obviously up to 30 years old, claiming they were 17, so they didn't need to provide any information and received preferential treatment.

It was enough to lead my die-hard liberal punk rock guitarist friend to start voting SD in last few elections. They were the only ones who would talk about the problems.

jiscariot··on Jeff Bezos' management rules are slowly unraveling inside Amazon
Middle-upper management also excels at this method of escaping blame/consequences. Move in, talk big and change a bunch of stuff, then on to the next before the tickets start coming in.
jiscariot··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
20 year listener here. I now listen until they force identity politics in to the subject at hand, then change the channel. In my experience it's much less than 10m, but could be my market too.
jiscariot··on The Hacker News Top books of 2023
If you've already read 1, you really should read 2/Dark Forest.
jiscariot··on The Hacker News Top books of 2023
Seems like everyone disagrees with the ranking of 3PB books. Probably a good thing. On 2 read-throughs, I vastly prefer 2 then 3, and consider 1 a bit of a slog.
jiscariot··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
How many popup warnings will I need to bypass/accept in order to use my LLM of choice?
jiscariot··on SCOTUS to decide if public officials can block critics online
Big thanks to FIRE for picking up the torch dropped by the ACLU. The ACLU, in their stampede to rebrand themselves as a racial justice org, like everyone else did a couple of years ago, has completely lost their way. I cringe everytime they show up as a free speech org in NYT crossword puzzles.
jiscariot··on Some advice I would give to a junior DevOps Engineer
I look at it as signal to noise ratio. If someone communicates a lot but has a very low signal to noise ratio, parsing what might be valid from everything else, becomes a chore and adds cognitive overhead.
jiscariot··on Children of married parents do better, but America is moving the other way
The most disingenuous use of stats I see regularly published, are those bemoaning wealth inequality between ethnic and racial groups that don't control for family makeup. There is a 30+% difference between some groups on one vs. two parent households, but I guess that doesn't fit the right narrative an would presume people have some agency in their circumstances.
jiscariot··on Ask HN: Why has no one replaced Ticketmaster?
I tend to agree with this analysis--that a part of the TM business model is extracting additional money for venues, artists and themselves, and taking on 100% of the reputational hit for fees. It's fascinating but have a hard time thinking of similar examples of a similar model, if anyone has some.
jiscariot··on Europe gives Mark Zuckerberg 24 hours to respond about Israel-Hamas conflict
When anyone says 'Yes, I believe in free speech, but …,' I stop listening. ~ Salman Rushdie.
jiscariot··on So far, AI is a money pit that isn't paying off
A link to gizmodo is the internet equivalent of those direct mailers that go directly to the recycle bin.
jiscariot··on Detroit man steals 800 gallons using Bluetooth to hack gas pumps at station
This sentence doesn't know if it's in the local paper or at a slam poetry reading:

"Paying at the pump is for chumps - when you can get gas for free - and illegal, but it didn’t stop a Detroit man from stealing almost 800 gallons of gas at the Shell at Eight Mile and Wyoming."

jiscariot··on Tech's broken promises: Streaming = confusing Ubers as much as taxis Cloud costs
Taxi roulette was not a fun game to play: a) will it show up? b) will someone else take my cab? c) will the driver get angry if I attempt to use a card? d) does the driver know where they are going?
jiscariot··on IBM study: 40% of workers will have to reskill in the next three years due to AI
Agreed. We all just need to stand shoulder to shoulder and we'll be fine. Social security and pensions will be well funded with all the new payers.
jiscariot··on Electricity Maps
Norway's done an amazing job of convincing the world how green they are.
jiscariot··on Software engineering lessons from RCAs of greatest disasters
That is eerily similar to what happened to us in IBM "Cloud", in a previous gig. An engineer was doing "account cleanup" and somehow our account got on the list and all our resources were blown away. The most interesting conversation was convincing the support person, that those deletion audit events were in fact not us, but rather (according to the engineer's Linked-In page) an SRE at IBM.
jiscariot··on New York Times considers legal action against OpenAI as copyright tensions swirl
My concern isn't copyright law, but that if trained on the NYT, these llms are going to be favorable to starting conflicts in the middle-east.

jiscariot··on The ad-based internet is dying, and it's getting worse in the process [video]
When you own the platform, your ads are a "Personalized digital user experience" and your competitors' are "ad tracking".
jiscariot··on DevOps Is Bullshit (2022)
From what I've seen recently is the inverse of that. There are scores of developers who have little understanding of OS scaffolding or networking, but are good at writing merge sorts in Python. Most Devops people I know are not the ones pushing "vanguard of a new paradigm" BS, they are just ops who can code and understand performance tradeoffs, networking, subsystems, etc. I guess we can blame Devops for one thing, the paradigm has encouraged the behavior of "real devs" (TM) not understanding anything about the underlying platforms they are writing code for. That was the point, but it's not all gravy.
jiscariot··on Cormac McCarthy has died
That stuff with the wolf in The Crossing was as deeply affecting to me as an adult as say, The Never Ending Story's Atrax in the Swamp of Sadness was for me as a kid.
jiscariot··on Cormac McCarthy has died
I enjoyed this book as well and remember thinking at the time how it was much more violent than Blood Meridian.
