jinder··on Long Covid is overblown and often something else, says Oxford professor
How do you expect to control for the world-wide psychosocial impact of the pandemic?

It's also pretty widely known that virtually all viruses can have a post-viral syndrome so if it would be MORE surprising if there wasn't a long covid.

I've had long covid for the last 10 months, and finally seem to be coming out of it. At its worst, I would get "episodes" where my entire body would start buzzing, so extreme that it felt like I was plugged into an electric socket. I can't convey to you how extreme this was, and if anyone were to suggest that this was caused by pandemic stress, they would be liable to a stressed response from my fist.

So you know two people who have had symptomatic covid, and you think that's enough data for you to determine it's overblown?
jinder··on Having SARS-CoV-2 once confers much greater immunity than a vaccine
Studies have already linked the inflammatory response in acute COVID to disruptions of the gut microbiome. This is a plausible route for long term, post-COVID neurological complications (anxiety, depression, neurosensory disturbances, insomnia etc).
jinder··on M1 MacBook Users Say Their Screens Are Cracking for “No Apparent Reason”
Correct.
jinder··on Angular v8.0
Switch to OnPush, use async pipes and immutable data structures. Add to that some of the virtualization components that ship with @angular/cdk and you're pretty golden most of the time.
jinder··on Yarn's Future – v2 and beyond
Both yarn and jest have announced they're switching to TypeScript. A corporate like Facebook would never allow that unless there was an internal shift in direction.

I'd consider flow dead.

jinder··on Periodic fasting starves cisplatin‐resistant cancers to death
Perhaps - but it's mostly rich countries on that list. If you die of malnutrition, preventable disease etc you might not live long enough to die of cancer.
jinder··on Behemoth, bully, thief: how the English language is taking over the planet
Imperialism was most definitely a huge factor - that's the sole reason so many countries have English as an official language.
jinder··on Tech Giants Take Their Talent Hunt to Cambridge, UK
I think what most people are missing in these comparisons is that London's tech market is hugely contractor oriented, and so it makes more sense to compare day rates. Finance in London pays typically £500-600 per day for average level frontend and backend work. There's the potential to earn much higher if you're good at what you do.
jinder··on Atom 1.25
Yes, it's definitely time to switch away from Ruby...
jinder··on Comparing AWS Lambda performance of Node.js, Python, Java, C# and Go
In which scenario would you use a blocking http call?
jinder··on How Redux Works: A Counter-Example
The Redux pattern is used quite widely, even if not via the official library. See NGRX for example, which implements the pattern in TypeScript + Angular.

jinder··on Flow and TypeScript
I think your pros read as pros against TypeScript, when many of them apply both tools.
jinder··on Flow and TypeScript
What about flow gives it better support for React than TS (other than it being built into the CLI)? Why does it fit more perfectly with Redux than TS? Why is it easier to learn than TS? Why does it have a more amazing type system than TS?
jinder··on Why we moved from Angular 2 to Vue.js and why we didn’t choose React
If you rely on a beta product you should have no expectation of API stability.

It's very easy to blame vendors when it's your own poor decision making that got you in the mess to begin with.

jinder··on Why we moved from Angular 2 to Vue.js and why we didn’t choose React
"We invested in a beta product and then shock horror - it changes before it's released. Let's blame the framework on that poor choice."

"We were unable to learn how to use TypeScript properly, so let's abandon gradual typing and suffer a net loss in productivity over the longer term."

jinder··on SoundCloud cuts jobs, closes SF and London offices
Soundcloud started dying when they decided to be more like Spotify and less like the independent music discovery service they started out as. Now they have an app and experience that is not particularly good at either.
jinder··on Angular 2/4 Is Too Little Too Late
> In the market share fight between React and Angular, React has won — and for good reason, I think.

I think HN members often forget that there is a whole world of software development outside of the big tech giants and startups. Often the tooling and frameworks used there is very different.

jinder··on Angular 2/4 Is Too Little Too Late
> You can use webpack with Angular.

In fact, Angular CLI uses Webpack by default.

jinder··on Angular 2/4 Is Too Little Too Late
The prevailing opinion on HN seems to be that React is great, and monolithic frameworks are bad bad bad - especially Angular.

On a recent project I started for a client, we did a full evaluation of React + Redux vs Angular 2/4 and NGRX.

Angular's first-class support for TypeScript, and RxJS is incredible when leveraged properly. Integrate this with NGRX for Redux style state management, and you get a compelling solution that is miles ahead of the React/Redux combo if you can get over the template syntax (instead of JSX) and the opinionated flavour of Angular.

It's difficult to offer an alternative opinion in the HN echo chamber, but we're having excellent results using Angular CLI + Angular 4 + RxJS + NGRX. It's worth the steeper learning curve, IMHO.

jinder··on Announcing TypeScript 0.9.1
We built Kangaroom (http://kangaroom.co.uk/) entirely using TypeScript. There are tens of thousands of lines of code.

The optional typing ability is a life saver when your code base grows. We've used the integrated tooling with Visual Studio which also helped a lot.

Microsoft is promising it will be kept in sync with ECMAScript 6, so we don't really think there is much risk in using it. It's definitely helped with productivity, and the learning curve isn't high for JavaScript developers.

jinder··on Show HN: AngularJS responsive room search engine
Yes, it's UK specific... for now!
jinder··on Show HN: AngularJS responsive room search engine
I'm the author - just thought I'd see what HN's thoughts and feedback are. It's a fully responsive, retina-capable, AngularJS web application.
