jimmygrapes··on Panasonic Toughbook 40
I'm sure color blind people are capable of learning too
jimmygrapes··on Toasts are bad UX
If Outlook showed a toast for every action I take, I would immediately do everything in my power to make it stop, up to and including hermitage.
jimmygrapes··on IRS collects milestone $1B in back taxes from high-wealth taxpayers
For those rich folk out there, did you know that you can voluntarily give more money than the IRS requires?

jimmygrapes··on Montana Has More Cows Than People. Why Are Locals Eating Beef from Brazil?
Ultimately it comes down to reliability. You and every other local might purchase from your local provider as you need it, but there's no reliable pattern or agreement in place.
jimmygrapes··on Toxoplasma Gondii significantly alters wolf behavior
You're also immunocompromised if you slept poorly or are dehydrated or malnourished (as many are, even if they don't know it). I agree that it's a poor blanket term.
jimmygrapes··on The Downfall of DeviantArt
Sounds like a very religious way to handle your issues
jimmygrapes··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Generally I wake up and assess which of my body parts are experiencing issues. Pressure differentials play havoc upon internal pockets. Other than that I go outside and feel the temperature and humidity and witness the general movement (or abcence of movement) of cloud formations. I smell the air. Surprisingly, these sensations are pretty close to accurate when it comes to predicting local weather.

I am not sure how to do that for space weather yet.

Discord comes to mine although I know it's a play on Eris (Free Net), same as Slack is a nod to Uncle Bob
jimmygrapes··on Dan Lynch Has Died (SRI, Arpanet, Internet)
Modern medical miracles aside, I doubt the die-off of baby boomers all within a short period is a clustering illusion.
jimmygrapes··on Can We Get Kids Off Smartphones?
One thing I'm really interested in is if/how a generation "banned" from anything finds a way to circumvent and/or improve upon things.
jimmygrapes··on State Farm won't renew 72,000 insurance policies in California
Insuring the building itself is far more risky when there's many tenants with relatively unknown risk profiles who could cause damage (leave the bathtub on all night, pour oil and unflushables down the drains and sewer pipes, put pizza boxes on the stove top and leave them on, smoke next to curtains, etc.). Not sure if that's the reason here.
jimmygrapes··on Gen AI Consumer Apps
I keep getting reminded by my phone to switch to using Gemini instead of the old assistant, fwiw
jimmygrapes··on I'm a neuroscientist. Our candidates have shrinking prefrontal cortexes
In the case of some writers, the decline is due to getting sober (looking at you, Stephen King)
jimmygrapes··on California bill would ban all plastic shopping bags at grocery stores
I am begging somebody to investigate and study or point to any existing ones regarding the use of plastic bags to shit in. I'm just curious about the obvious corelation and I wouldn't mind being proven wrong.
jimmygrapes··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
For some places their internal processes require positive contact with the account holder, in other words they can't trust that an email or text will be read (or read by the account holder). They definitely should've tried at least once though, especially if you opted for that as your primary communication method.
jimmygrapes··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
I found Termination Shock to be his worst by far, in large part because it felt too contemporary. It felt awfully similar to a music album mandated by the studio to an artist that really didn't have anything to say, so he just skimmed trending news of the time, went down a shallow rabbit hole or two then wrote a half-hearted but verbose blog post and called it a novel. I didn't get any sense of passion from it.
jimmygrapes··on Trello Allegedly Breached
Which "publicly accessible resource using email addresses from previous breach corpuses" are they referring to? Am I being paranoid that HIBP itself is a potential vector for this enumeration type data exfiltration?
jimmygrapes··on Meta documents show 100k children sexually harassed daily on its platforms
for me the issue is: why? followed by a few more "why?" and once the answer becomes "because." it becomes time to solve those intermediary questions. maybe that happens and nobody tells me, idk
jimmygrapes··on Flattr is closing down (2023)
I don't like the music my friend makes, but I'll support him by buying his album and sharing it with others who might like it more.
jimmygrapes··on Ask HN: What are your most common tasks and painpoints in spreadsheet software?
all I've wanted for years now is to subdivide a cell and still be able to reference and style the resultant subsheet without weird embed things, just using the standard formatting stuff. merging cells is a poor substitute and breaks tabular data naming in excel at least
jimmygrapes··on Majority of debtors to US hospitals now people with health insurance
Sounds like the way hair salons and strip clubs are run in the U.S.
jimmygrapes··on Delta Dental says data breach exposed info of 7M people
Cool, Delta Dental is one of the few dental insurance providers the VA recommends and offers plans with. Nothing says "we support veterans" like a good old fashioned sell-off of data.
jimmygrapes··on X sues Media Matters to silence moderation criticism
Alternately: X sues Media Matters for unsubstantiated slanderous remarks triggering unwarranted financial setback
jimmygrapes··on Volunteer.gov: Discover volunteer opportunities around the country
Say what you will about Mormon/LDS religious beliefs, but I have never met anybody more selfless and pleasant when it comes to volunteering and caring for those in need. I've been a recipient of that kindness and co-participant in many volunteer activities with them, and not once felt like there was any attempt to push a belief on me other than "be kind to others". I probably wouldn't want to join them at church or read their literature other than as entertainment, but the individual people don't deserve all the hate that the church gets as a whole.

You almost got me, but at least I learned about the origin of ruling to protect from foodborne illnesses in my attempt to prepare to correct you
jimmygrapes··on Stable Audio: Fast Timing-Conditioned Latent Audio Diffusion
I know quite a few technically talented musicians who have next to no creativity in actually writing the music (aside from jazz style improv sessions). Most of them never really play live unless it's part of a similarly uncreative band of college friends. I wonder if having a catchy/complex AI generated song created for them to play live might be interesting to them. Gonna check in and see what they think.
jimmygrapes··on Google, Meta, Amazon hiring low-paid H1B workers after US layoffs
Citizenship is meant to limit external actors influencing the vote of who should represent the people of any given area, and being qualified to represent the people by virtue of a sustained commitment and longevity.
jimmygrapes··on Ask HN: How to learn work ethics and discipline as an adult?
NCO in the Army is a vastly different situation than a commissioned officer in any branch, and each workplace is going to differ in terms of idiotic bosses, harsh environment, intellectualism, and tolerance for innovation and invididuality. The rest of your items (chain-of-command, blind following of orders) are going to be present in some form everywhere in life, and you're welcome to push back on those if you're careful about how you do it.

Sounds to me like when you say both that you want to learn discipline while also saying certain things are not your cup of tea, one of the areas of mentation you may want to work on is "the ability to experience, tolerate, and overcome discomfort". Discipline may even be described as that ability, in part.

Not saying you absolutely need to join any military service to get that, but there are few other circumstances where you have no real option of quitting once you've committed to a certain duration of obligation.
