Author here. I was actually somewhat worried that someone gonna get to my Pi that has some other stuff running on it, because I am absolutely not doing any security and sandboxing on this nodejs server...

But I guess you made a good point, here you go :) Welcome to the wonderful world of random code copy-and-pasted from Stackoverflow!

jimmies··on Avoid Consumer Routers
You can say the same about running Linux on your laptop. The answer is that you don't buy the random $20 routerat Walmart and hope that you can install openwrt on it. Instead, you buy the router specifically to install openwrt on it. It's certainly a bit more painful but you get used to the idea of using a bit older gen hardware but enjoy excellent software supoort.

Over time, with enough people do it, the manufacturer will realize that and cater to you (see the Linksys 54gl router, archer c7, dell laptops, and Lenovo Thinkpad -- the manufacturer all know people buy the hardware to run the software they want)

jimmies··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
Happy to hear!

>I have no problem with staying in focus and I just don't get what a few people are saying about distortion, I must be blind.

If you point it to a piece of rectangular paper you'll see the distortion. In the commonlands review link above, Max pointed that out with a picture as well.

jimmies··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
> So there is a market gap between so-so webcams for $100-200 and a full-blown setup with a mirrorless camera...

Don't know where you can buy a readymade one. However, if you don't mind DIY, try our free software project showmewebcam. It uses a Pi and its HQ sensor and some software glue to make a USB webcam [1]. You'll have a wide selection of affordable lenses [2] and cases [3] that people cook up for their personal use. It's so much fun experimenting with them for different use cases.

Last time I commented here, there have been criticisms about the quality of the lens that the Pi foundation offer. We have discovered many other decent alternative lenses that help remedy the quality and distortion issue of the stock lenses. An example of a good accumulation of knowledge as we have more users and people paying more attention is the commonlands lens guide [4].

The software is very actively developed and we have a pretty supportive developers community. We try our best to have good software engineering practices so we can maintain this project in the long run. The software is designed to be modularized. It is easy to understand, build, and improve upon. I have a lot of fun building it - in fact I just finished a 5 hours coding session to address comments on the Pull Requests that I started earlier. I hope eventually it's not just another pi project for fun, the firmware has the potential to make this solution more powerful than the best webcam that money can buy, just like how openwrt is for routers.

I still have yet to record a decent demo video to demonstrate the power of the Picam but there is just too many things and too little time to get it done. Oh well...

jimmies··on Simplo batteries breaking MacBook logic boards?
Given the situation happened, was the fire caused by either the right to repair or the laptop going through a repair? Why did you drag the "repair" and "a bad charger causing a fire" into one category?

What a horrible strawman argument to make.

jimmies··on Today’s Webcams Are Boring, So I Brought Back a Classic
We just figured out How to solve point 1 about a week ago. It is now working well on macOS. Try it :)
jimmies··on Today’s Webcams Are Boring, So I Brought Back a Classic
Yeah, if you have an expensive mirrorless camera in a fixed setup then it's not bad, but it's quite a hassle if have to carry it around and expensive to buy.
jimmies··on Today’s Webcams Are Boring, So I Brought Back a Classic
- The wide angle (6mm) is the one I used. It has a good angle of view but with quite a bit of lens distortion.

- I haven't had time to look at the custom lenses, as this is quite confusing to me.

- Output is 1080p30. Here is the link for the specs: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/camera/

jimmies··on Today’s Webcams Are Boring, So I Brought Back a Classic
To be honest, I didn't realize that that sensor just about the size of an iPhone's sensor. I would have guessed the iPhone's camera sensor is smaller. It really blew my mind how compact the whole iPhone camera package is.
jimmies··on Today’s Webcams Are Boring, So I Brought Back a Classic
This blog post is kind of a playful idea on the iSight. However, if you want to take it seriously, you should consider using the High Quality Camera with the Pi as a USB webcam. The sensor on that HQ camera is HUGE, thus the picture quality is really really good, especially when you take time to figure out the focus and such [1] [2]. It's better than most if not all the webcams you can buy on the market. It's definitely more compact, cheaper, and less hassle than using the whole Mirrorless + HDMI capture-card setup if you want to upgrade your Zoom appearance.

On the software side, I have worked on the exact Pi-as-a-webcam software project for a while [0]. It's quite customizable and you can play with parameters of the camera to further extract values out of the hardware. I also am hoping, in the future, to implement "smart" functions such as auto-panning the camera and such.

However, I still couldn't figure out a good case for it so the setup looks kinda crummy, not as slick as the iSight.

jimmies··on Finding vulnerable Twitter accounts with expired domains
This domain hijacking idea reminds me of an incident with Google I discovered a couple of years ago that landed me a bug bounty with them. I found out they created email logins with a not-registered domain for their candidacy account. I ended up registering that domain and "sold" it back to them in good faith. At least I can die with a smile on my face -- I once sold Google a domain.

jimmies··on Show HN: NeuralCam Live – Using ML to Turn iPhones into Smart Webcams

jimmies··on Show HN: NeuralCam Live – Using ML to Turn iPhones into Smart Webcams
Nice work!

I have been researching and working on this webcam quality problem for a while. I have tried a couple of webcam-over-phone solutions and while they solved the image quality issue, they tend to introduced quite some lag. Especially when you use your dedicated microphone, then the lag becomes a huge issue (because the microphone has minimal lag and the webcam has a significant lag leading to the voice not matching the lips).

Have you thought of the issue and have you done an analysis on that?

Besides, with this setup, you have to rely on a driver that turns the video from whatever phone to a webcam. That in my experience is quite flaky, but perhaps not inherently problematic. So I wonder if you could comment on OS support for people who want to use your software with say, Linux?

Disclaimer: I use and package a software suite to turn a raspberry pi high quality camera to a webcam. The lag seems pretty good and it appears as just a good old usb webcam on linux and windows (although I haven’t managed to make it work on macOS) [1].

jimmies··on New Hampshire Lawmaker Kills Repair Bill Because 'Cellphones Are Throwaways'
I submitted this video link by Louis Rossmann days ago but it was unfortunately mis-classified by HN as spam (and they did clear this up personally with me so don't worry).

https://youtu.be/Bt2KDtDt940

He made a clear concise point in 3 minutes why the right to repair is important. Now the good thing is that it doesn't matter how many states the bill has been shot down. As long as one state or one country has it, it will open the Pandora's box.

jimmies··on The Heir to a Tofu Dynasty Finally Learns to Make Tofu
I have a Nepali friend who was at the time doing a Ph.D. in biology. Part of his daily routine is to do DNA/RNA extraction, which is highly time-consuming and precise. It involves using pipettes to transfer a minuscule amount of stuff from one tube to another, wait for hours, spin it, add some enzymes, spin it, etc. Sometimes you do what you're instructed to do from the kit and the extraction still doesn't produce a useable result.

He had a pretty snuggly relationship with his advisor, and from time to time would bring his food to the lab to share. He told me one day, the advisor decided to ask him how to make the food. Like any biologist, she came to his house with a notebook, fully expected to be able to take notes. She expected him to show her the recipes like what you do in the DNA extraction. Instead, what he told her was... put a reasonable amount of this herb and that herb into the pot, then cook until done. She got frustrated and threw the notebook away and gave up the dream of cooking Nepali food.

I am Vietnamese and there's that special Vietnamese dipping sauce recipe that I wanted to make to treat my Chinese friend at the time I stayed at her place. I got really frustrated when I was following a recipe to make it and couldn't get it right and wasted 3/4 of what I bought. My friend was like... so... let me try. And she just mixed shit randomly, tasted it, and tried adding more shit by her instinct, and it worked!

I do enjoy cooking by the book from time to time. At the same time, there is a lot of Asian food that is made by instinct. It is part of what made the food interesting. It made the food part of an envolving species instead of being fixated.

BTW, learning from mistakes, my biologist friend now has a website with real recipes you can sorta follow, please like and subscribe™ if you want to make Nepali food: https://avikarn.com/foodblog/

jimmies··on Why Google+ Failed
This, Google was shoving the Hancock down to every Google user.

It didn't just die by itself. Google Talk was killed with Google+ too. It was a functional, no-nonsense IM that just worked and worked everywhere. After they engulfed this into Google+, it just became a bloated monstrosity that no one could understand. Remember when it suggested you every Google+ user when you tried to type a friend's name in Hangouts? Yeah... that was pretty fucked up.

I am just amazed that Youtube didn't die with it after it was used as a gateway to Google+.

jimmies··on Speedrunning Windows 95
Just a playful way to mess with people. At work, I see a guy that wears a D-Va shirt every other day. He is a big guy, and the whole D-Va thing is printed full-screen on his shirt. It makes quite a funny sight.

4chan people are notorious for pulling that kind of shit. I wouldn't be surprised if the person that makes that video is from /g/.

If you don't find it funny, then you don't find it funny, like how you don't get some movies or memes that people like. I do.

jimmies··on Ask HN: Where should I start as a 34-year-old switching to software as a career?
Where should you start? Ask yourself: How bad do I want to switch? Do you want to live the rest of your life feeling you missed out on something when it was not too late, or you think you'll be okay the way you are now.

I just switched from being in bioinformatics to software engineering being 30 year old. The problem isn't that you're getting old. The problem isn't that you lack experiences, either. I have none of those. On top of that, I'm just an international student, I have zero advantage compared to other applicants.

I think the most important problem/question is how bad you want to change your job/career? Do you come home everyday after work feeling like shit? Do you feel like you don't do enough work to deserve a break, but you feel like bored all the times at work? Do you feel like you hit a brick wall, not sure what is up for your future?

At one point in my life, I felt all of the above. I wanted to kill myself. I figured out if I wanted to stay alive, then no one else will help me besides myself. So after years of depression and worrying, I decided to instead of sleeping through my fears, I would do something to get myself out of that. Many things I did at that time turned out to resonate with people somehow.

One year and about ten days ago, one of my submissions got on the front page of HN. That changed my life forever. I wish you have the courage and grit to do the same for yourself, if you feel that way too. Doing anything, you don't know what will stick, but when you do enough, you will have a feel of what will.

jimmies··on WiPhone: A professionally-packaged Arduino phone
As a person who likes Arduino very much, I have to ask: Why Arduino?

It seems like you have to design a quite complex system here with many parts and gears to communicate and synchronize together. You'll need an OS for that kind of work. Arduino is not the language/paradigm for that kind of sophistication: even multi-threading will require some kind of hack.

It seems like an Arduino-phone is a development nightmare just waiting to come out.
