jhull··on Rejection
I dove for 9 years, through college, and the trick I always found is to just do it as much as you can. The more time you spend at 3 meter (or 10 meter) the less fear you have. As an example, went to a practice about a year ago after not diving for 3 years and it took me a lot of time bouncing the board to get comfortable throwing dives again.

Spending time higher up also makes coming down to a lower height that much better. Train on 10M for a full day and then come back down to 3M and it seems like nothing. Was a good strategy to break your fear. One of my coaches (from Hungary) her father was her coach and used to dangle her and the other new recruits from the platform at a young age to break their fears. Not a strategy I would use with my kids, but worked for her (a 1988 Olympian.)

jhull··on The "Work" Trap
Great post. Felt similar sentiments and serendipitously was given a chance to travel to Africa and beyond for the good part of a year. So took it! http://engineerwithoutacause.com/without-a-cause.html
jhull··on Usage of Linux distros on web servers: Debian-based +7.4%, Red Hat-based -6.0%
Any idea why Redhat/Fedora are on a 3 year decline? Seems like Ubuntu is taking their market share (looking at yearly graph)
jhull··on Python 101: An Intro to logging
One extremely useful method that I almost never see in tutorials is

    >>> logging.exception("an exception happened here and will be printed")

This will print out the message and then the full formatted error traceback. In many of my old projects I built a whole string formatting mess that would print out and format exceptions and just recently discovered that logging.exception() does that all for you.
jhull··on API Driven Twitter Advertising
Not something I had thought about initially, but agree that they are missing the "what the user sees" view similar to how Google lets you see what different searches look like with your ads.[1]

jhull··on Apparently Yelp has a no-fly list
I think there is only one thing you can do: Leave a negative review about the place on Yelp.

jhull··on FoundationDB: A new generation of NoSQL database
Is it just me or is there a new "superior-than-the-others" NoSQL solution every week?
jhull··on If You Don’t Think You Need It, You Haven’t Seen Greatness
I like the idea of periodically taking a break from Googling or always knowing a fact. For me doing crosswords is a great exercise in this, sure you could Google the clues and know right away, but its much more satisfying wondering the answer yourself and eventually getting it by using other letters gained from different clues.

However, if this became the de facto standard way of doing things, living as our ancestors did, I feel like society would regress. The invention of the search engine was to fill a human need to organize the world's digital information in an easily retrievable format. Libraries have had card catalogs for hundreds of years: just curious, would you argue for going back to the times that pre-date those systems? Sure there might be a more random discovery of books just aimlessly walking through shelf after shelf, but what if you needed that book asap?
