jhowell··on Leaving NYC for Nashville
Looking forward to the follow up post to this one. Cheap rent/mortgage, short commutes to the exit/airport and Samsung appliances while nice, don't solve problems they weren't designed to solve.
jhowell··on Ask HN: How does Quora log me in automatically?
Timely question https://blog.quora.com/Quora-Security-Update?share=1
jhowell··on How to balance full-time work with creative projects
Paying money back especially money collected from friends and family and not institutions and VCs is not "complicated." Their "investment" never had a chance to make money you projected and you went on to work on someone else's investment. Given these facts I am sure your investors would have preferred to invest in the company where you work now versus the one you left.

Curious to know if you'll repay the seed, or if seeds are refunded assuming it was a friends and family round.

Not for everyone.
jhowell··on Intermittent fasting: No advantage over conventional weight loss diets
I IF because I get pretty sleepy during the day if I eat.
jhowell··on First gene-edited babies claimed in China
Looking at how addictive our interactions with technology have become this seems concerning. A future where we can all exist and never look up or leave our thought bubbles could have a dramatic impact on humanity and motivations.
jhowell··on How to Talk to People, According to Terry Gross
Again in my opinion, she took issue with some of the content of his music, which is understandable but felt almost encroaching. Clearly, I'm not "right" but was curious to hear if others held a similar opinion.
jhowell··on How to Talk to People, According to Terry Gross
In my opinion, listening to her daily, Terry's interviews are different based on whether or not she likes, or appreciates the interviewee experience. This really stuck out to me during an interview with Jay Z.
jhowell··on New Study Indicates Silicon Valley’s Elite Are Not as Liberal as They Think
What's insulting about saying someone from a middle class background (presumably in the United States) is "not as familiar with the depths of extreme poverty or working class families as I am."

To me, this sounds like a shared opinion based on personal experience.

jhowell··on Ask HN: How to deal with incompetent people
From my experience which is obviously different than yours, over time these pats on the back do more to divide than unite development teams. Others know who gets stuff done and who doesn't just like you likely know who gets stuff done and who doesn't. The slack pats on the back seem counter productive, almost as if looking for credit for doing your job. The higher up in the organization you go the less important it becomes that you refactored the code to batch load index data where the prototype might have inserted one record at a time. By the time the index is done, the people who use it don't really care how long or how efficiently it was built.

Don't take it personally. Be happy for their accomplishments. Be happy for your accomplishments. Think about how important the "tough" times you are having now will be in 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 10 years. Control what you can control.
jhowell··on The Bucolic Life of a Cambodian Grandmother Accused of Mass Killings (2017)
> Ms. Im Chaem said she had never planned to go to court anyway.

> “I do not like what they accuse me of,” she said in a recent interview at her home in Anlong Veng, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold. “I don’t want to think about that. There’s no reason for it. I don’t want to have any trouble. I just want to live in peace.”

jhowell··on Quitting Instagram
Where is she going to be working now? Or will she spend all of her free time trying to recover from this time at Instagram. It's easy to write stories and say things like this given all the news about social media now.
jhowell··on Facebook reportedly discredited critics by linking them to George Soros
I think that's taking the teeth out of it a little bit. I believe that he began working for Hogan in secret seeking revenge for being outed.
jhowell··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
I hope you share your opinion in person, loudly and unapologetic with all who will listen. Do not keep your beliefs and perspectives a secret. You deserve to be heard.

In fact, I would love to learn more about history from your perspective. Perhaps you can elaborate or share some literature that I can read at my leisure. Also, I'm curious to hear any opinions you may have on #metoo, or women in technology should you be willing to indulge me.

For your convenience, I quote you below:

"Further it was precisely the areas which were built up by slavery that were destroyed during the Civil War. Thus negating any advantage gained from slavery."

jhowell··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
"This is a common misconception that cannot be backed up by the simplest mathematics."

Then you say...

"Further it was precisely the areas which were built up by slavery that were destroyed during the Civil War. Thus negating any advantage gained from slavery."

Sounds like you have a problem with the truth of any advantage provided to whites by the federal government. Typically folks like you say, "get over it next," but never is job interviews, just on message boards.

Probably fake news to you, but how were the advantages of free labor destroyed by the Civil War. Perhaps you take "built this country" literally and are a recent immigrant.

Crap, just clicked on your previsions submissions and comments... Dude, I think you're a racist.

jhowell··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
I don't think your account of the country goes back far enough. My recollection was that the USA was built by slaves. The irony of this conversation is the assumption our country, represented by Government feels any differently now about the exploitation of labor today.
jhowell··on Ask HN: What careers outside technology as I get older?
This is very much reflects my experience as well. Of course, my interest in what I recall as startup culture is not as interesting to me at this point in my life.

jhowell··on Microsoft Beats Amazon in 12-Month Cloud Revenue
But if we're talking about cloud computing and microsoft offers these these services in the cloud, they should not be penalized because their customers once started on the desktop. They're demonstrating that they are making the transition.

jhowell··on The annoying habits of highly effective people
Or personal health outcomes in themselves or people they care about. As we get older this should not be understated and bears out in personal bankruptcy applications. Good health is the ultimate privilege. Many factors that determine good health are rooted in real privilege (safe streets, clean water, quality diet, free from sexual abuse, etc.)
jhowell··on The annoying habits of highly effective people
Spoken as someone who denies the safety net beneath their high wire act. For some the risks described and the comforts forgone in the hunt of prosperity are called life. Losing these resources means intense uncertainty of paralyzing outcomes. It's not our job to understand the plight of all around us with compassion, but it does make it easier to justify incongruent rewards they bring.

jhowell··on Disable Google Chrome Sign In and Sync
> That seems hard to believe as it would imply that they have code specifically to cripple the Firefox experience.

I think it's more the case of enhancing the Chrome experience and not doing anything to deliberately impact firefox.

We seems fine with a future where AI becomes integrated into our legal system. Here is an excellent opportunity for AI to identify potential innocent people.
