jgreen10··on APIs.io – The API search engine
Getting ideas for what's out there.
jgreen10··on OVH servers exploited through shellshock
This seems like the tip of the iceberg. Shellshock didn't generate nearly as much attention as heartbleed, but is far more devastating and easier to exploit. How many home routers have been taken over by now?
jgreen10··on We Just Thought, 'This Is How You Start a Company in America'
I'm assuming it was because they didn't have any money at the time, not as a business strategy. Personally, I'd stay home and build software that solves a real problem, but I'm not in YC...
jgreen10··on AWS Frankfurt, Germany Region
Nowadays DE-CIX is slightly bigger than AMS-IX.
jgreen10··on Naval Charts
You might like https://www.marinetraffic.com/ itself ;)
jgreen10··on Ideal Image Slider
Is there a way to do lazy loading? That would be ideal :)
jgreen10··on Is Java the Cobol of tomorrow and Go the Java of the future?
Pushing AND developing. Languages live or die by how much is invested in their tools, libraries, execution environment, community, etc. The only languages with a comparable investment to Java are C(++) and JavaScript. Everything else falls short and will get passed by for most projects. It's quite possible that Google will make a similar investment into Go, but they do have a tendency of dropping out of projects prematurely.
jgreen10··on 3D Object Manipulation in a Single Photograph using Stock 3D Models
Why do the legs of the rendered chair connect at the bottom, while those are hidden in the picture and the stock 3D model does not show them?
jgreen10··on Amazon’s Cloud Is Growing So Fast It’s Scaring Shareholders
The Amazon profitability figures are a bit misleading. Amazon adds a very big revenue generating chunk of company every year that has enormous value. That's effectively their profit. One day, they could decide to keep money in their pockets, instead of investing it, but share holders would only demand that if they thought they could do a better job at investing than Amazon. The market has had enough confidence in AMZN for it to go up by 275% in the past 5 years, compared to 125% for the NASDAQ. It's not clear whether this shows that Jeff Bezos is a better investor than the market, or that the market currently believes that he is and this will eventually correct itself, but momentum definitely seems in Bezos' favour.
jgreen10··on Mistakes You Should Never Make
Making sure your bills are paid is the responsibility of any adult. If you're running a business, messing up your taxes should be one of your deepest fears.

The general sense I got from the story was: We were young and stupid, but instead of doing drugs, we convinced VCs to give us $3.8 million, which made us believe that we knew what we were doing.

jgreen10··on #Love: Virtually No Sex
This is like saying that using a heater will cool you down, because eventually we'll run out of gas. The article may have a point in one of many possible future realities, but not in the one we currently live in.
jgreen10··on Software Entrepreneurs Must Go Mobile-First Or Die
It really depends on what kind of business you want to build, and in what kind of market. You shouldn't even want to be a software entrepreneur, you should want to solve a problem / improve things. Some problems can benefit more from mobile than others. For example, PCs are great for high I/O tasks like authoring and formal communication, while smartphones are great for low I/O tasks such as consuming infotainment and informal communication. Most areas involve a mixture of those, and which should be your first priority depends on your area.

For example, meetup.com is quite PC-oriented, which almost seems odd for a new social networking platform, but being able to easily publish and read detailed meetup descriptions is critical to its success. That doesn't mean meetup.com cannot benefit a lot from mobile (I wish it did), but it shouldn't be its first priority.

jgreen10··on Personal names around the world
I don't like the "Full name" label. It's very uncommon to be asked for your full name in the Netherlands. You use initials in almost all formal documents. Why not "Name"?
jgreen10··on Condoleezza Rice Joins Dropbox’s Board As It Names New CFO, COO
You seem to have forgotten that the Bush administration knowingly lied about the intentions and capabilities of Saddam Hussein in order to gain support for the war.
jgreen10··on How a Swedish engineer saved a once-in-a-lifetime mission to Titan (2004)
Typical Sweden.
jgreen10··on Leslie Lamport awarded Turing Award
Perhaps in terms of quantity, but to many he is the man who single-handedly brought order to distributed systems. I was surprised he had not won a Turing award yet.
jgreen10··on Setting the record straight
Facebook felt that remaining the apex predator in the social space was worth $19b. The Whatsapp founders, like anyone else, couldn't say no to $19b.
jgreen10··on Malaysia Airlines Says It Lost Contact With Plane Carrying Over 200
Don't be silly. Airplanes are the safest form of travel with the lowest fatality rate. Safer than cars, buses, trains, or walking.
jgreen10··on America Online to Buy Internet Chat Service for $287 Million (1998)
It seems these types of transactions have nothing to do with potentials profits, but with power over users, or "lying on a bed of weeds and ripping them out before they strangle you".
jgreen10··on DeepDB – High-performing transactional and analytic database
Those sentences don't make any sense. This whole thing looks like it comes out of some kind of vaporware start-up generator.
jgreen10··on Google wins everything (part 1)
Google failed to make a big dent in cloud computing, e-reading, instant streaming, product search, on-line payments, and many other areas where they had huge ambitions, but it was Amazon that drove the market. Amazon even owns 10% of the tablet market, more than Samsung and Google combined. Google has become obsessed with turning itself into a social network, just when social networking reached its peak. Even Jeff Bezos' attempts at getting to the moon have so far been a lot more serious than that of Larry Page...

If anything will get us to the moon it's not piles of cash, it's a solid business strategy. I certainly hope Google will find one for glass, their self-driving cars, and other cool hardware projects, but a quick look around all the car manufacturers suggests that Google may once again miss the boat.

jgreen10··on Ask HN: What should I learn to stay relevant in the next 5 – 10 years?
C, Java, and JavaScript would have been a good choice 10 or even 20 years, and they're still a good choice today. They'll be around forever, and at the forefront of innovation.
jgreen10··on Put.io
I expect this is a very temporary service.
jgreen10··on King Candy Crushes Developers, The Saga
What's next? Trademarking "Apple"?
jgreen10··on King.com, makers of Candy Crush Saga – Trademark Trolls with a Double Standard?
I don't see the big deal. No one's making a fuzz about Apple being a trademark. At least Candy is a man-made object.
jgreen10··on Microsoft Reports Record Revenue of $24.52 Billion in Second Quarter
Perfectly happy about my Lumia 620. Great bang for buck. However, it's not a phone to brag about.
jgreen10··on What Happens When the President Sits Down Next to You at a Café
Things that were once cool either fade or become normal. Facebook has become normal.
jgreen10··on [dead]
That's an interesting, though crude way to teach about the fallacies of Marxism, but what does Obama have to do with any of this?
jgreen10··on The real reason for pensions
It's easy for me to say, since I'm from a country with an excellent pension system (the Netherlands), but completely managing your own pension would be foolish at best. You cannot predict how long you will live compared to others. To spread the risk, you should always be part of a bigger pension scheme.
