jgerrish··on Npm Audit: broken by design?
Correct me if I'm wrong.

But, one of the goals in software engineering right now is reproducible builds. This means building from source. And of course we'll want to automate that. We've already made inroads with CI

So, correct me if I'm wrong, these are still vulnerabilities.

Tragedy of the commons stuff.

This article might be honest. But I hope in the future we don't need devil's advocate arguments.

jgerrish··on A Twitter addict realizes she needs rehab
Such a sad outcome for something that could have been magical together.

I was there in the Usenet days, and it was beautiful. I was there when Compuserve and Prodigy and Mozilla burst forth.

It's not the platform though.

We're seeing a retelling of the Eternal September story, and it's sad. Yeah, some historical context will be passed on, reframed for the new century. But there's a core philosophy that will never be "recovered." Because it didn't truly arise from sharing.

It's right there in the name.

Beware the tempers wasn't part of the original dream.

Oh, also, really clever! I love studying resiliency in complex systems!

Could you imagine being part of this. Told the company was running DiRT testing or whatever, and then getting fired or punished for listening and following instructions?

Could you imagine afterwards being lectured to use common sense. Also, we have secret corporate policies you need to know about and follow. Resolve that catch-22. Repeat for a decade.

You'd be justified in never trusting them with your life or another loved ones again.

jgerrish··on What robots can and can't do for the old and lonely
Companies will find other uses for at-home robots.

As a hypothetical somebody could help their parents better deal with dementia by purchasing a puzzle playing robot (or giving the person instructions to carry out themselves, Task Rabbit style) from a "trustworthy" company. Which gets sold to another company.

Suddenly your puzzle robot is recommending Centrum Silver.

Innocent enough. Company gets a new CEO.

The robot is now recommending Centrum Silver and suggesting you hang out in this clique to "encourage social exercise and extend long-term health." Yay! Dinner Parties!

New management, new features. The robot recommends against this path to the grocery store to avoid bad areas. You know how those areas are.

And on and on.

There's probably ad, biz dev, and other teams and departments in media organizations that do this, not the writer.

They probably use specialized tools to scan text for keywords that have high paying ad payouts.

Fucking interesting shit honestly.

You've got: 1. ad keyword auction data 2. product pricing and product margins 3. internal business goals 4. external business relationships and deals

Gross and cool, think quant monster geeks. I'm sure some people love working on this, I wish them the best. It's nice to feel good in what you do and your life.

jgerrish··on Ask HN: You have one shot to redesign the Internet – what do you change?
I wouldn't change anything. Centralized control will be abused. The people I see harassing others online a lot of times are US citizens, on US domains, in US jurisdictions. Sorry.
jgerrish··on Insurance is like gambling, don't overdo it
Thank you for this informative post. I love exploring stuff like this, and it's even better that there are so many factors which I need to adjust and change my behavior on. Thanks!
jgerrish··on Ask HN: Would issue “bounties” make contributing to open source more appealing?
I've worked with groups with small bounties and toxic environments. I'd rather have less drama in my life. Remember, good engineers can make money.

Programming is one of the few things I love in this world, and these groups made me start hating it.

I hope you can keep your feedback and leadership positive, I think it's too late for some areas I've worked in.

Also, consult a lawyer on legal issues with compensation and volunteers.

jgerrish··on NSA Recommends How Enterprises Can Securely Adopt Encrypted DNS
Except bureaucracies are going to do what they do. The offensive agency will hold back information, and when an attack occurs on the defensive agency, calls for bringing the defensive agency under the umbrella of the offensive agency will be made.

Brats fighting over resources while Mom just wants to sleep. It's not their fault, it's the nature of political organizations.

Sure, you could fix it with centralized oversight and stringent information sharing rules. But eventually you're either strangling them with rules or building one conceptual agency.

jgerrish··on The Fediverse is better than regular social media
Pretending the Fediverse can't be censored is naive. New Internet protocols plus secure boot chains plus legislation will make it all moot.

The past decade I learned to lose hope in these ideas of freedom, thanks to my friends.

Just like copying VHS and cassette tapes (easy) led to copying DVDs (more difficult) and HDMI (difficult). Every tech makes it more difficult. The same will happen with distributed systems. More work for the users of those systems.

And the discussion over the past decade shows that public support will be lost too.
