jftuga··on SpaCy: Industrial-Strength Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Python
I recently wrote an open source Python module to deidentify people's names and gender specific pronouns. It uses spaCy's Named Entity Recognition (NER) capabilities combined with custom pronoun handling. See the screenshot in the README.md file.

jftuga··on Show HN: OWhisper – Ollama for realtime speech-to-text
I have not heard about this. Can you please provide more context?
jftuga··on Breaking Git with a carriage return and cloning RCE
I wrote a CLI program to determine and detect the end-of-line format, tabs, bom, and nul characters. It can be installed via Homebrew or you can download standalone binaries for all platforms:

jftuga··on Switching Pip to Uv in a Dockerized Flask / Django App
I believe he alluded to it here...

"I have to imagine this is because nobody in the Python community knew enough Rust to fix it. Had the native portion of Pendulum been written in C I would have fixed it myself."

jftuga··on Edit is now open source
Micro is nice because it is a single-file, stand-alone executable that has mouse support, macro record/playback and syntax highlighting. (I haven't checked Nano recently). It is great for making quick edits to json configs, shell scripts, python scripts, etc. Syntax highlighting and line numbering are key. If I need to make a really quick edit, it is much faster to use this than waiting for VS Code or PyCharm to load. You also stay focused. By this I mean, your eyes don't leave the terminal window that you are currently working in. This allows me to more quickly complete the task at hand.
jftuga··on I built a native Windows Todo app in pure C (278 KB, no frameworks)
Here is one of few Windows apps that I have written, albeit in C#. compinfo is a single, 431 KB windows executable.

It displays basic computer info including user name, computer name, OS, model, serial number (service tag), CPU model, memory, IPv4 address and uptime.

jftuga··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
What prompt are you using for this?
jftuga··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
I'm using ollama, llama3.2 3b, and python to shorten news article titles to 10 words or less. I have a 3 column web site with a list of news articles in the middle column. Some of the titles are too long for this format, but the shorter titles appear OK.
jftuga··on Home Loss File System
I know someone who lost their home in the Palisades fires. This is what he said about this spreadsheet:

"I’ve already started spreading the word about the spreadsheet, it’s a great resource."

jftuga··on Pdfcpu – A PDF Processor
This is a great project. It's basically a Swiss army knife style tool, but for PDF files. I've been using it on & off for several years now for various projects.
jftuga··on 40+ JackOfManyTrades needs advice for job search
I agree with this - good idea.
jftuga··on Singlefile: A web extension to save a complete web page into a single HTML file
I use this extension to locally save my Claude chats. It does a great job preserving code blocks.
jftuga··on Home Depot tracked a crime ring and found an unusual suspect
After the video was published, it was revealed that some of the recorded "theft" reactions were actually staged. According to Rober, he had asked friends to test the device and record reactions, but some of them had recruited other people to pretend to be thieves without his knowledge.

When this came to light, Rober apologized for not properly vetting all the footage and explained that 2 reaction shots had been staged without his knowledge. His later glitter bomb videos included more rigorous documentation and transparency.

jftuga··on Stop Requiring CRLF Line Endings
I wrote a standalone CLI tool (written in Go) to determine and detect the end-of-line format, tabs, bom, and nul characters:

jftuga··on Inside M4 chips: P cores
From the article:

Key information

Current M4 chips offer 4-12 CPU P cores.

M4 P cores are arranged in clusters of up to 6, sharing L2 cache and running at a common frequency.

P core clusters can be shut down, idling at their minimum frequency of 1,260 MHz, or at one of 18 set frequencies up to a maximum of 4,512 MHz, as controlled by macOS.

Their instruction set is “technically” ARMv9.2-A, but without its Scalable Vector Extension (SVE).

They use 1-2 mW when idle, rising to peaks of 1,400 mW (floating point) or 3,230 mW (NEON vector code).

macOS preferentially allocates them threads at all QoS higher than 9 (Background).

Threads running on M4 P cores are mobile, and may be moved to another core in the same cluster frequently, and after just over a second may be transferred to a core in the other P cluster, when available.

Thread mobility makes interpretation of the CPU History window in Activity Monitor very difficult.
jftuga··on You too can write a book
This is a good observation. I was hoping to read a blog that wasn't so narrowly focused to just text book publishing.
jftuga··on Passport Photos
https://github.com/esimov/caire?tab=readme-ov-file#face-dete...

This shows an example of what can happen when you perform a basic resizing of faces. You will notice the distortion when this library is not used. When I had to resize 40,0000 photos, I noticed better visual outcomes when using this library for my testing set of photos.

jftuga··on Passport Photos
tangent:

I wrote this: https://github.com/jftuga/photo_id_resizer

This program is used to resize large photo ID images. When image resizing occurs, a content aware image resizing library is used with its face detection algorithm to avoid face deformation.
jftuga··on Useful built-in macOS command-line utilities
Nice. After reading the man page, I see that it can be used to convert image file formats:

    sips -s format png photo.HEIC --out photo.png
or resizing:

    sips -z 300 600 original.jpg --out new.jpg
jftuga··on Useful built-in macOS command-line utilities
I have this .zshrc function to track the battery and charging, which uses pmset:

    function batt-info() {
        echo
        system_profiler SPPowerDataType | grep Wattage | cut -c 7-
        echo
        pmset -g batt
    }
jftuga··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
I love using it for macros. Do you happen to know if there is anything similar for either VS Code or PyCharm?
jftuga··on Ubuntu Hoping to Remove Qt 5 Before Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
From the article:

"Ubuntu developer Simon Quigley laid out the plans for hoping Ubuntu packages will move from Qt 5 to Qt 6 so that by the time of the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS cycle in early 2026 that the older version of this graphical toolkit can be removed."

jftuga··on Want Windows 10 Security? That Will Be $30, Microsoft Says
It's not pointless - it gives you a one year extension. In that time, you can arguably wait and buy a faster computer for more-or-less the same price as buying one today.

My Windows computer is an i7-7700 series which is not compatible with Win 11 w/o hacks. I will probably convert that into a nice Linux or Proxmox system since it has 32 GB ram. I'll eventually buy a system (on sale) that ships with Win 11 Pro.

jftuga··on Ask HN: What ist your AdBlock strategy?
Not mentioned yet: Paying for YouTube Premium if you and your other family members watch a lot of YT. This is only needed for Smart TVs. It's $23 per month for up to a family of five. You also get YouTube Music as well.

Otherwise, I use Firefox + uBlock Origin + Privacy Badger and also have redundant PiHole servers.

jftuga··on CRLF is obsolete and should be abolished
I wrote a command line program to determine/detect the end-of-line format, tabs, bom, and nul characters

Stand-alone binaries are provided for all major platforms.

jftuga··on Command Line Tools I Like (2022)
