jfim··on 4Chan Lawyer publishes Ofcom correspondence
On Android, it's technically possible to use an always on VPN to still use pihole even when on cellular data, but unless there are some mdm controls on the phone, one can obviously disable the VPN.
jfim··on 4Chan Lawyer publishes Ofcom correspondence
It's totally doable to block YouTube with pihole, and also to make it blocked only on certain devices.

The regex are: (^|\.)youtubei\.googleapis\.com$ (^|\.)ytstatic\.l\.google\.com$ (^|\.)ytimg\.l\.google\.com$ (^|\.)youtube-ui\.l\.google\.com$ (^|\.)youtube\.com$ (^|\.)ytimg\.com$ (^|\.)googlevideo\.com$

You can create groups and assign devices to them, and assign the block rules only to certain groups.

The only annoyance with this is that it blocks logging into Google since they redirect to YouTube to set a login cookie as part of the Google login process. If you're already logged into Google though, everything works as normal, and you can always disable pihole for five minutes if for some reason you got logged out and need to log back in.

jfim··on Police Said They Surveilled Woman Who Had an Abortion for Her 'Safety.'
They wouldn't require a warrant, but at the same time, that wouldn't be scalable to be able to record every license plate everywhere in the city.

Having a barrier to accessing data can help prevent casual abuse in my opinion, so that officers can't look up say some ex girlfriend's license plate, but if they get a warrant they can look up some suspect's license plate.

jfim··on NIST's DeepSeek "evaluation" is a hit piece
Through LLM washing for example. LLMs are a representation of their input dataset, but currently most LLMs don't make their dataset public since it's a competitive advantage.

If say DeepSeek had put in its training dataset that public figure X is a space robot from outer space, then if one were to ask DeepSeek who public figure X is, it'd proudly claim he's a robot from outer space. This can be done for any narrative one wants the LLM to have.

jfim··on Why the hell does Android even exist anymore?
I think he meant that iPhones didn't have them, and they have both of those now.
jfim··on Mini smartphones from Japan [video]
They had their own phone culture prior to the iPhone, with mobile phones having features like tap to pay, streaming video, emoji, video calls, and so on, twenty years ago. They just weren't exported abroad.
jfim··on Find SF parking cops
There are also international tourists who may have different local parking rules than the ones in SF. Having clear demarcations between allowed and non allowed parking areas makes it easier for everyone to follow the correct rules.
jfim··on Ultrasonic Chef's Knife
I can see why one would use a serrated knife to cut bread, but what knife would one use to cut cheese other than a chef's knife?
jfim··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
I have one in my car and it's not distracting. It basically displays the current speed, the speed limit, the current cruise control state, the current gear (PRND), and the current navigation instruction (eg. turn left in 1.5 miles).

It doesn't display notifications or other distractions, nor is it possible to configure it to do so.

It's not flickering when viewed in person, but when filmed with a phone camera they do flicker due to how the display works.

It's a pretty good system, and allows one to keep their eyes on the road without having to look at other screens, and keeping ones eyes focused on far objects.

jfim··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
I've actually gotten legitimate calls from the bank, although the correct way to handle those is to say that you won't give any information to them but you'll call them back.
jfim··on Grapevine canes can be converted into plastic-like material that will decompose
I'd assume those bags would be okay considering they break down after a few days of holding compostable materials, and frequently make a mess in the compost bin. The "compostable" cutlery is definitely not compostable under normal household situations though.
jfim··on My thoughts on renting versus buying
Switzerland is a bit different from the US. From what I understand, property ownership entails paying the imputed rental value in taxes, which makes property ownership much less desirable. In the US, mortgage interest is tax deductible up to a certain limit, property taxes are deductible, and there's an amount of capital gains that's excluded from taxation when selling one's primary residence. Compared to other places in the world, the benefits of property ownership are pretty bonkers.
jfim··on Tesla changes meaning of 'Full Self-Driving', gives up on promise of autonomy
LIDARs have the advantage that they allow detecting solid objects that have not been detected by a vision-only system. For example, some time ago, a Tesla crashed into an overturned truck, likely because it didn't detect it as an obstacle.

A system that's only based on cameras is only as good as its ability to recognize all road hazards, with no fall back if that fails. With LIDAR, the vehicle might not know what's the solid object in front of the vehicle using cameras, but it knows that it's there and should avoid running into it.

jfim··on Half an year on Alpine: just musl aside
Out of curiosity, what are the reasons for using Alpine as opposed to something more mainstream like say Ubuntu?
jfim··on ReMarkable Paper Pro Move
I believe the lifetime free subscription is an account setting, not a per device setting. If you go to my.remarkable.com and check the connect subscription page, it should say it's free as a reward for being an early customer.

You can also connect more than one device to the account nowadays.

jfim··on India's billion-dollar e-waste empire
What's the concern with Turkey, out of curiosity?
jfim··on Ask HN: Should we stop worrying that AI will replace developer jobs?
Even in the case of coal mining, jobs fell as output increased. See the two charts in https://acoel.org/the-rise-and-decline-of-coal-mining-jobs-1...

Peak coal jobs was in the 1980s but peak output was in the early 2000s, while employment went from 200k to about 75k in that period. Sure, coal might have been cheaper but it didn't translate into more jobs overall.

jfim··on AGI is an engineering problem, not a model training problem
Not necessarily. For example, early attempts to make planes tried to imitate birds with flapping wings, but the vast majority of modern planes are fixed wing aircraft.

Imitating humans would be one way to do it, but it doesn't mean it's an ideal or efficient way to do it.

jfim··on French firm Gouach is pitching an Infinite Battery with replaceable cells
Right, that's basically the problem, if one wants to travel by air with an ebike without hassle, there's no real option to do so.

There's the Ligo 10X (https://ebikes.ca/product-info/grin-products/ligo10x-battery...) which makes 99Wh battery packs that can be connected together, but otherwise it just seems like rules lawyering.

There really needs to be standardization of battery packs for ebikes instead of proprietary ones, so that one could rent a battery at their destination.

jfim··on French firm Gouach is pitching an Infinite Battery with replaceable cells
I wonder if this will allow flying with an ebike battery in disassembled form. The regulations allow up to 100Wh per battery, and an unlimited number of batteries, so transporting the individual cells should be okay, at least in theory.
jfim··on Kodak has no plans to cease, go out of business, or file for bankruptcy
Phones already do a lot of processing of images to make them look better than what a digital camera would capture out of the box, and Kodak already makes such a dock, it's called the Kodak dock: https://www.kodak.com/en/consumer/product/printing-scanning/...
jfim··on MCP: An (Accidentally) Universal Plugin System
In practice it'll just mean that each MCP provider will have API tokens and it'll be even harder to lock down spending than AWS. Maybe companies will need to have a company wide system prompt to pretty please don't use the expensive APIs too much.
jfim··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
What are the incentives for people to be fat, out of curiosity? Do you mean farm subsidies for corn, for example?
jfim··on SF may soon ban natural gas in homes and businesses undergoing major renovations
Gas cooking doesn't really have good temperature control though. Using a temperature probe, I can set my stock pot to 98°C on the induction cooktop and it'll stay exactly there for hours with no worrying about the burner set too high or low for the stock to gently simmer.

There's also no worrying about combustion gases in the house.

jfim··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
There are definitely things it can't do, and things it hilariously gets wrong.

I've found though that if you can steer it in the right direction it usually works out okay. It's not particularly good at design, but it's good at writing code, so one thing you can do is say write classes and some empty methods with // Todo Claude: implement, then ask it to implement the methods with Todo Claude in file foo. So this way you get the structure that you want, but without having to implement all the details.

What kind of things are you having issues with?

jfim··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
It varies, but they're not necessarily very complex projects. The most complex project that I'm still working on is a Java swing UI to run multiple instances of Claude code in parallel with different chat histories and the ability to have them make progress in the background.

If you need to repeatedly remind it to do something though, you can store it in claude.md so that it is part of every chat. For example, in mine I have asked it to not invoke git commit but to review the git commit message with me before committing, since I usually need to change it.

There may be a maximum amount of complexity it can handle. I haven't reached that limit yet, but I can see how it could exist.

jfim··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
Anecdotally, I can take on and complete the side projects I've always wanted to do but didn't due to the large amounts of yak shaving or unfamiliarity with parts of the stack. It's the difference between "hey wouldn't it be cool to have a Monte Carlo simulator for retirement planning with multidimensional search for the safe withdrawal rate depending on savings rate, age of retirement, and other assumptions" and doing it in an afternoon with some prompts.
jfim··on MacPaint Art from the Mid-80s Still Looks Great Today
NN4 tended to crash more than NN3, it may have been due to the rushed development during the browser wars.
jfim··on X changes its terms to bar training of AI models using its content
I see, so in that hypothetical world, one could make a spider guy comic book that looks suspiciously like another, but not label it "The Amazing Spiderman (r)"?

Sounds like it would be a boon for things like fan art and fan fiction.

jfim··on Show HN: Claude Composer
This changed recently (like a day ago or so), pro has access to Claude code now. They mention it's for "light coding work" on the pro plan: https://support.anthropic.com/en/articles/11145838-using-cla...
