jfc··on Passing as Black
I know a few people who have to deal with these sorts of issues. They identify as black, but by appearance people assume they are White, or Greek, or Hispanic, or Asian, or something besides black.

Occasionally, people ask them why they have so many black friends or tell racist jokes in front of them. Other times, people who believe that they share a common heritage will speak to them in languages and become angry when they don't understand.

Human beings are all to apt to judge a person's ethnicity by their appearance, but in many instances one's appearance is not an accurate gauge of their ethnic heritage.

jfc··on Why reading a book 100 times is a great idea
> You're a different person than you were 5, 10, 20 years ago, and you'll experience the same book differently as a different reader

I think this is often the point of reading a book multiple times, other than for sheer enjoyment. Sometimes we read a book and enjoy it, and upon re-reading it discover that there are parts of the book that we really hadn't understood at all.

These layered depths of meaning often characterize great literature, which is why at least a few re-reads of a book can be surprisingly illuminating.

jfc··on Anthem Breach May Have Started in April 2014
As long as U.S. laws fail to impose significant costs for data security breaches, we can expect companies to treat the costs of these breaches as the cost of doing business--just as they do with litigation costs for faulty automobile parts, manufacturing pollution, and the like.
jfc··on It's Surprisingly Simple to Get Your House Off Google Street View
Zillow includes the Google Street View image option on for sale properties, where available. It really does give you a better sense of the house and its surroundings.

I wonder if Google could/would implement a toggle option, so that homeowners could turn Street View on or off.

jfc··on Show HN: How I made the print and eBook versions of my web book
Very cool, thanks for the update. I probably should have paid more careful attention to the paint brushes next to it, would have given me a clue.
jfc··on Show HN: How I made the print and eBook versions of my web book
Very entertaining read; I suspect your book is equally interesting.

I've had both experiences, one book published by a mid-sized publisher, and self-publishing another. When publishing the book myself, I found myself immersed in the world of typography, paper weights, ISBNs, and designs. It was really, really fun. I'm thinking through a new book project now and am starting that process again. I'm looking forward to seeing what new tools are out there.

A bit off topic, but what I really liked was that little pumpkin pie that you baked. How small it was! Why was it pink? Even the consistency of the pie looks perfect. I can't figure out how you got those small wisps of whipped cream into such tiny loops?

jfc··on They Call Me Doctor Berry
Sounds like status incongruence: where social status characteristics (in this case black, female) appear incongruent with a person's role (professor of engineering). This is not her problem, it is the students' issue.

Basically, for these students (and probably some faculty members), her role has upset the social order to which they've become accustomed. Someone they would otherwise view as inferior to themselves (a black female) is in a superior position to them. It is uncomfortable for them.

This is probably part of why that one student wants to give her instructions on how to improve--my guess is that it has less to do with the quality of her lectures. Rather, he wants to their roles in the classroom to match his notion of their relative social power--with him in the superior position.

This happens quite a bit with black professionals, as well as members of other ethnic minorities. I do some work in this area and it comes up often in professional environs.

jfc··on Why don't you use Bootstrap?
I use bootstrap when clients request it, otherwise I prefer Foundation. Bootstrap is a good grid framework, but generally I have found that Foundation is more easily customizable (read: you don't have to "undo" as much when developing for custom designs).

Also, bootstrap has minor issues that bug me: parents of dropdown menu items aren't clickable, and there is no block-grid class which is an easy way to organize looping content (e.g., blocks of text, images) into a grid.

jfc··on Travel planning software: The most common bad startup idea (2012)
I've been working on a travel activities startup in stealth mode, but had to put it on hold because of other work.

Reading this article made me think back to some of the challenges I had initially with customer development. People were always interested in the idea, but everyone seemed to want to use it differently. It was a real challenge to come up with something that would be useful and satisfying for most customers.

Along the way, some people tried to talk me out of it, saying that the app should be more like location exploration, because people don't travel alot. My response was that while everyone doesn't travel often, there is always someone who is planning a trip. I don't think the frequency of travel is the issue--it's the logistics of it.

Enough of waxing nostalgic, I think I'll get my packages and libraries up-to-date and get back moving on my idea.

jfc··on Diversity and Startups
All great points. You have highlighted exactly what I was getting at: the tech world has some of these D&I principles in place already, but is failing to live up to, or--as you aptly point out--even critically reflect on them.
jfc··on Show HN: OneBody Church Directory software I've been hacking on for 7 years
Nice UI and a comprehensive app. Congratulations on a job well done!

My only thought is that small to mid-sized churches may not have a Rails specialist, so a hosted option would probably be very popular.

jfc··on Diversity and Startups
On some level, the tech world isn't living up to its own principles, as it relates to diversity and inclusion (D&I). Many seem to view D&I as being somewhat external to the tech space--it's an issue that other industries have been discussing and is becoming more prominent in tech.

I would posit that the underlying principles of the tech world share a number of core values with D&I.

Think about the open source software movement (OSS). One crucial perspective that the OSS shares with D&I is that both view discrimination as an impediment to progress. OSS licenses include several non-discrimination clauses (economic, field of endeavor, other restrictions). The licenses go to great lengths to ensure the technology is available to everyone.

When you think about the "Cathedral and Bazaar" models of software development, which one is naturally more diverse? The hierarchical, exclusive cathedral, with its rigid structure, serious gatekeepers, and highly-credentialed leadership? Or is it the open air bazaar, with all kinds of people talking (softly or loudly) in a place known for public discourse. A place where anyone can walk by and join in and become part of what's going on?

My point is that the underlying precepts of D&I are similar to principles that already exist in the tech world.

So this isn't really about embracing D&I. Instead, the tech community needs to start living up to its own rhetoric--it's own values. This isn't about adopting an external issue, it's about a community fully aligning with its own values.

jfc··on Diversity and Startups
Many people deal with both gender and race issues simultaneously. Non-white women in the U.S. are 18%+ of the population (over 1/3 of the U.S. female population). It's easy to think of gender/race as an either or, but for many of us it's a both/and.

I've written a book on the subject (diverse women/women of color), and have done a good bit of research in this area which is why I am familiar with the numbers and the issues.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like additional information.

Edit: This isn't meant to discourage; the post is a good start. Just wanted to provide some information for next time.

jfc··on An Employee Dies, and the Company Collects the Insurance
I get that the companies here are not trying to off employees and collect.

It does, however, sort of remind me of the Herbalife "investigations", where a hedge fund bet $1 billion that Herbalife would fail and then began lobbying politicians to bring it down. You look at the lengths these guys went to and consider the potential impact of their efforts, and it's unsettling to say the least - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/10/business/staking-1-billion...

For me, it calls into question what behaviors are incentivized by allowing people to seek any sort of financial benefit from people/companies in which they have no real property interest (for lack of a better term). I don't think this is purely a financial/tax inquiry; it does seem to have some societal ramifications that ought to be considered as well.

jfc··on Why is Stack Overflow so negative of late?
It was closed because the person closing it didn't recognize bash as a language; the substance of my question wasn't even at issue.

After others pointed out that it is a language, a mod re-opened it and it was answered.

jfc··on Why is Stack Overflow so negative of late?
That's crazy. I haven't seen the geography message yet, but I did post a bash question once and someone closed it because it "wasn't about programming."
jfc··on Why is Stack Overflow so negative of late?
>So when I say I'm doing it this way for a reason and looking for a way to make it work, either trust my judgment or decide I don't deserve to be helped and stop commenting. ...Most annoyingly, this behaviour is often rewarded with upvotes.

Totally agree with this. I can't stand it when people start mucking about in the comments. It's almost as if they are looking for something to do, and then feed off of each other. Eventually, all the activity draws the attention of a super-zealot, who promptly closes the question.

jfc··on Why is Stack Overflow so negative of late?
When I first started programming, I could use SO without asking a question because everything I needed to know was fairly basic. It was great because many of the answers I came across helped me to understand more of the "broader universe" of issues I would encounter during development, and so encouraged me to research and learn more about the language.

Once I started asking questions, I was careful to respond to comments and accepted and upvoted the best answers. I wanted to be a good citizen of the community. And reciprocity was a part of that: eventually, I found myself able to respond to questions and I remember how great it felt to see the first +25 on my profile because someone accepted my answer.

These days, if I ask a question it's because I've spent a good amount of time on it and haven't been able to resolve it myself. Here's what happens when I ask a question on SO:

1 - I ask the question, post the code, and the error message I'm getting

2 - Question downvoted

3 - Respond to comment that says my question is a duplicate (it's not, which I clarify to avoid "closed as duplicate")

4 - Respond to comment about a missing semicolon that got deleted when I was cutting/pasting/formatting my code. (Despite the error msg making it clear that the missing semicolon isn't the issue)

5 - Question upvoted

6 - An answer! Says that I need to read the docs and provides a link to a non-relevant section (I've read the docs)

7 - Finally, a helpful answer! Looks pretty good, so I test it out and it does the job. I accept and upvote the answer.

8 - Notice a duplicate answer posted less than 1 minute after the accepted answer. Duplicate answer person complains that their entry was posted first. I advise them that the timestamp indicates the other poster was first and they reply that it is a time zone bug.

9 - Later I check back and notice this message: "Question closed as vague and cannot be answered"

10 - Check back one more time and see that someone has downvoted my question

11 - Email the mods to get the downvote removed

jfc··on Results of the GitHub Investigation
> Here we have "no gender based..." of Tom and his wife. Nothing mentioned about whether there was other people who did were involved in that type of activity, nor whether the two individuals were involved in other types of activity.

Great point. I didn't notice that phrase, but now that I think about it, you're right.
