jf22··on Ask HN: Where is legacy codebase maintenance headed?
Yes the workflow has shifted.

I've handled the sloppiest slop with llms and turned the worst code into error free modern and tested code in a fraction of the time it used to take me.

People aren't worried about cost because $1k in credits to get 6 months of work done is a no brainer.

A year from not semi-autonomous llms will produce entire applications while we sleep. We'll all be running multi-agents and basically write specs and md files all day.

jf22··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
How long does it take you to go through the code vs writing it yourself?
jf22··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
What are you fixing?
jf22··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
So? Getting a months' worth of junior level code in an hour is still unbelievable.
jf22··on Ask HN: What did you lose forever because you had no backup?
Idk I've forgotten a lot.
jf22··on Using AI Generated Code Will Make You a Bad Programmer
I think this comment supports the point I was trying to make...
jf22··on Using AI Generated Code Will Make You a Bad Programmer
I already miss the fun heads down days of unraveling complex bugs.

Now I'm just telling AI what to do.

jf22··on Using AI Generated Code Will Make You a Bad Programmer
AI's are amazing at understanding even the utterly horrific bad code.

I've refactored the sloppiest slop with AI in days with zero regressions. If I did it manually it could have taken months.

jf22··on Using AI Generated Code Will Make You a Bad Programmer
The same way the loom made bad weavers.

Anybody know any weavers making > 100k a year?

jf22··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2026?
Outlier compared to what?

I'm not denying new forms of media have negative impacts but the world kept spinning and progressing.

jf22··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2026?
But what was the impact?

Society has made tremendous progress since the invention of TV.

jf22··on Ask HN: Do you allow vibecoded submissions in your open-source projects?
What if the feature was coded by hand?
jf22··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
Look, you tell the LLMs what kind of tests you want and judge the quality before committing.

If you're letting the LLM create useless test that's on you.

I think you're reading these comments in bad faith as if I'm letting the LLM add slop to satisfy a metric.

No, I'm using an LLM to write good tests that I will personally approve as usefull, and other people will review too, before merging into master.

jf22··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
A fancy CRUD app is still a CRUD app.
jf22··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
I don't know why you'd think that.

200 decent unit tests are better than zero unit tests.

jf22··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
What kind of apps do you work on?
jf22··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
> quantity over quality

Yes? Making quality concessions for more code or features is part of the job.

jf22··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
> you've accepted a big drop in quality.

Right, but you do it in a 10th of the time.

jf22··on Transparent leadership beats servant leadership
One of my worst job experiences was when I depended on a colleague who wouldn't deliver. Any feedback or conversations with that colleague mostly resulted in tantrums and empty promises.

The lack of delivery severely harmed the services I provided to the company and to external users, ruined team morale, and was a huge source of stress.

My boss always turned the problem back on me, despite him also being my colleague's boss.

I tried everything I could for 18 months and had extensive documentation of all my attempts, sometimes working in parallel with my boss or using his recommendations.

Still, the problems persisted and every time I brought it up with my boss it was as if he was oblivious to the ongoing saga. I want to HR and over his head about it and he always fed me shit about "empowerment" and "growth."

Yeah, I was empowered to interview with other company's and grew into other new roles.

jf22··on Ask HN: What's your solution to tech addiction?
Table saws seem too dangerous for me but a track saw would work too!

I think I'm going to go paint lines in parking lots.

jf22··on Ask HN: What's your solution to tech addiction?
It's funny every time there is some corporate team building session or whatever and the question is asked "what do you want to do when you retire?" every developer always suggests doing something more tangible.

Nobody ever says I want to spend more time behind the computer.

jf22··on Ask HN: What's your solution to tech addiction?
Are you going to build tech to combat tech?

I got a phone lock box and bring physical books everywhere now. I bring classics or sci-fi stuff.

What really started driving me crazy is that when I'm doing kid stuff like sports or library events all the parents drop of their kids, head to the parent area, and everyone sits on their phones.

I'm always the only one reading a book. And yeah I have my phone with me, but I try to exclusively use it to take pictures.

jf22··on Ask HN: How do you deal with eye strain as a developer?
I moisturize my eyes with Optive drops, have special computer glasses with a lens designed for the distance of my screen, and take frequent eye breaks every 15 minutes.

My eyes are otherwise healthy but I'm of a certain age (mid 40s) where eyes start degrading.

jf22··on Ask HN: Startups should brag less and ship more (guilty as charged)
It's not bragging. It's marketing.
jf22··on Ask HN: AI has changed my job for the worse
I think LLMs can generate tons of production quality code if you put in the time. I do it every day. The output and productivity is amazing.

I'm also really bored and hate that my job is writing specs and stupid prompts.

jf22··on Ask HN: Am I the only one not using AI?
You forgot 2023 where you'd generate get half-lucid unit tests
jf22··on Ask HN: What do you do while ChatGPT-5 is thinking?
If I can context switch between two prompts I will.

If the task is hard and I can't easily break context I'll do exercises, chores, or comment on HN.

jf22··on Ask HN: Low entry barrier hobby that can potentially generate income?
Things get cheaper but not zero. You could pick up knitting and sell hats on Etsy in a month.
jf22··on McKinsey wonders how to sell AI apps with no measurable benefits
This part was never quiet...

The quiet part out loud phrase is overused.

jf22··on Bank of England flags risk of 'sudden correction' in tech stocks inflated by AI
I don't understand why you think this is important to mention.

Search engines are better at certain tasks than others.

If I said should FLY to Spain is it a cheap shot against sailing because I didn't mention it?
