jestinjoy1··on Printing Money Goes Haywire in Venezuela
Thats correct. I dont know that much about Venezuela. Do we have records to show that its entirely funded from oil profits? What if a country doesnt have any other thing to make profits than oil. Same is the case for gulf countries.
jestinjoy1··on Printing Money Goes Haywire in Venezuela
"Every time I wrote that Chavez was in fact direly mismanaging the economy, diverting investment funds that were needed to maintain oil output into social spending, I knew that I could look forward to receiving angry e-mails and comments accusing me of trying to sabotage his achievements for the benefit of my corporatist paymaster. "

This says it all. I am from India and I believe its the governments job to help social security measures rather than helping corporate.

jestinjoy1··on Unity Comes to Linux: Experimental Build Now Available
This came just in time when I was thinking of switching to Mac. Blender game engine has features but not upto the mark to compete with game engines like Unity. The python scripting in Blender is good.
jestinjoy1··on ACM Classic Computer Science Books Series
But "Macintosh human interface guidelines" included !

jestinjoy1··on Ask HN: What is the most mind blowing book you've ever read?

jestinjoy1··on The end for Mandriva
I started my Linux journey with Mandriva. At that time, compared to Redhat Linux, Mandriva had better user interface and could play mp3. Now I use Debian. Sad to see the end of the road for Mandriva
jestinjoy1··on 40 Busy Years Later, Paul Allen, a Microsoft Founder, Considers His Creation
Just like GNU/Linux he could release the whole thing is a community developed software
jestinjoy1··on 40 Busy Years Later, Paul Allen, a Microsoft Founder, Considers His Creation
Why not he release Microsoft products for free! Instead of doing like US govt (Killing people on one side and doing charity on another side), he could do something best he could do in his field.
jestinjoy1··on Show HN: Turing machine simulator in C
You can think of it as a theoretical machine introduced by Alan Turing which can compute anything that can be computed. If something cannot be computed by Turing machine, then it means that it cannot be computed at all. An important aspect is that it is defined as a simple machine with infinte length tape and a moving head, which can move in any direction. Tape is made up of cells where inputs/outputs are stored. There is also another related proof that says problems are uncountable and programs are countable which means there exist some problems which cannot be solved at all. I would recommend the book Introduction to Automata Theory, Languages, and Computation by Ullman et al. It explains from very simple machine called finite automata to Turing machine. For a beginners introduction Wikipedia entry is still good
jestinjoy1··on What If Students Could Fire Their Professors?
Students rating professors is bad because

1. Professors raise bar sometimes which students find difficult to cope with and result in low feedback

2. Some students try to "hit" professors with low grades since they are not interested in them

3. More work by professors means low grades from students

This is what usually happens in India and I am a professor

jestinjoy1··on Today is Debian 8 release day
Debian Twitter page has also got live coverage https://twitter.com/debian
jestinjoy1··on Today is Debian 8 release day
Thats interesting. One thing that is said about Debian is "most stable GNU/Linux". Now it seems, it is a thing of the past.

https://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/

Any idea why they have gone with this?

jestinjoy1··on Introduction to Linux, Free Course from the Linux Foundation
Nothing changed. Even they have the same questions at the end

jestinjoy1··on Michael Stonebraker wins Turing Award
Though most articles says his open source contributions, Wikipedia page says "PostgreSQL evolved from the Ingres project at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1982 the leader of the Ingres team, Michael Stonebraker, left Berkeley to make a proprietary version of Ingres"
jestinjoy1··on India goes digital

jestinjoy1··on LINUX is obsolete (1992)
On the portability aspect why Minix is better than Linux? I didn't get that point.

jestinjoy1··on Farewell, Dr. Dobb's
This is very sad. Last time I had the same feeling reading closing down news from http://www.h-online.com/open/. Very sad that these people are finding it difficult to stay alive even though they provide top class content. Why couldn't they stay alive if Facebook can Google can live on ad revenue.
