jessehattabaugh··on Show HN: ustaxes.org – open-source tax filing webapp
Truth is taxes in the US are pretty easy too; you just have to find TurboTax's free version which they hide. It downloads info from your financial institutions and employers, and asks you all the relevant questions. It remembers your info from year to year, and sends you reminders. You just have to dodge a bunch of upsell offers. TurboTax lobbied the US government to prevent them from building a competing product, and in return they have to offer a free version. So in a way, TurboTax is our official state tax preparation system. Yay free-market?

You shouldn't assume that an intelligent civilization wouldn't find a weapon of mass destruction that's effective against a non-planet based civilization.

Imagine if they had said that about HTML forms back in the '90s

Honestly firefox's PWA support always sucked it didn't support extensions, or the Share Target API, and Firefox installed PWAs don't show up in the "Remove Program" ui on windows, or even the app drawer on Android from time to time. Even Safari has a better PWA experience. This looks like Mozilla cutting bait when they know they can't compete. Firefox is in a death spiral. It's been a good run!
jessehattabaugh··on Firefox 85 Is Here, but Mozilla Is Killing PWA Features
Honestly, their PWA support has always sucked. It lacked extension support, Share Target API support, and the installed apps didn't appear in the "Remove Programs" UI on Windows. Edge does a MUCH better job, and so does Chrome on Android. Even Safari has a better PWA experience. This looks like Mozilla in a death spiral to me. You had a good run Firefox!
jessehattabaugh··on Ask HN: What laptop should I buy in 2021?
Just to get a Chromebook thread going; there's some really exciting options with the new Ryzen *C chips and the new Intel Xe powered Evo chips coming out this year. Lenovo has/had an awesome sale [1] on their ThinkPad C13 Chromebooks with $300-$500 off. I can't stand those upside down ThinkPad trackpads though so I'm waiting for one with a normal glass trackpad.

jessehattabaugh··on Our experience with the Fediverse, and why we left
I've been banned from two mastodon servers; one for saying "Neil Degrasse Tyson is my spirit animal" and the other for simply disagreeing with somebody. The tribalism is strong on Mastodon and of you don't make effort to conform you won't last long.

jessehattabaugh··on Fitbit is now officially part of Google
I have been using an app called Fit-to-fit to sync my heartrate and sleep data from Fitbit to Google Fit for years. This saves me some trouble so I'm excited! Any idea when this will be delivered?
jessehattabaugh··on What Is Social Cooling?
Experiencing negative consequences and adjusting your behavior to avoid them is also called becoming a better person.
jessehattabaugh··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
Bernie didn't tell him to do what he did, and he was just one guy. This was a large mob, and Trump had just instructed it to do 90% of what it did. The possibility that violence could occur was clear. That's not at all a valid comparison.
jessehattabaugh··on Hotwire: HTML over the Wire
As a web developer 20+ years, I'm just happy to see how much job security I have since none of you are smart enough to manage a React app and Webpack config.
