Facebook can "show off" and develop a reputation as having interesting, technically innovative, meaty, challenging projects to work on which is useful for recruitment purposes.

jensv··on Reverse Shell from an OpenVPN Configuration File
I think some of the free VPN services may hardcode/import a configuration so your settings areessentially baked in. Your only option is to start and stop the VPN, and maybe change the server location.
jensv··on Beijing Wants to Rewrite the Rules of the Internet
Kind of an odd error message.

" Looks like you are offline

You'll need to check back here once you have restored your connection. Thanks for your patience. "

But you're clearly online if you can see the error message....

jensv··on Plastic Bag Found at the Bottom of World's Deepest Ocean Trench
I use plastic bags (from groceries) as a garbage can liner and always feel bad because I suspect there might be a better or less wasteful way to reduce plastic usage. Anyone have any ideas or tips?

I feel like I should use reusable grocery bags but then I have to clean the garbage can (boohoo).

jensv··on It’s Impossible to Prove Your Laptop Hasn’t Been Hacked
"But given that current defenses against detecting processor-level backdoors wouldn’t spot their A2 attack, they argue that a new method is required: Specifically, they say that modern chips need to have a trusted component that constantly checks that programs haven’t been granted inappropriate operating-system-level privileges. Ensuring the security of that component, perhaps by building it in secure facilities or making sure the design isn’t tampered with before fabrication, would be far easier than ensuring the same level of trust for the entire chip."

They admit that implementing their fix could take time and money. But without it, their proof-of-concept is intended to show how deeply and undetectably a computer’s security could be corrupted before it’s ever sold. “I want this paper to start a dialogue between designers and fabricators about how we establish trust in our manufactured hardware,” says Austin. “We need to establish trust in our manufacturing, or something very bad will happen.”

jensv··on Chinese local governments rush to admit fake data
实践是检验真理的唯一标准,自冷战结束以来,世界上只有中国在经济规模上,缩小了和美国的差距。

Practice is the only criterion for the test of truth, and since the end of the cold war, only china has been able to narrow the gap between the United States and the United States

Perhaps, but what if it is accurate? It's been said that religion is opium for the masses. Deluding yourself might make you feel good but you're still suffering.

jensv··on Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?
" One piece of data that indirectly but stunningly captures kids’ growing isolation, for good and for bad: Since 2007, the homicide rate among teens has declined, but the suicide rate has increased. As teens have started spending less time together, they have become less likely to kill one another, and more likely to kill themselves. In 2011, for the first time in 24 years, the teen suicide rate was higher than the teen homicide rate.

Depression and suicide have many causes; too much technology is clearly not the only one. And the teen suicide rate was even higher in the 1990s, long before smartphones existed. Then again, about four times as many Americans now take antidepressants, which are often effective in treating severe depression, the type most strongly linked to suicide."

jensv··on America’s Competitors Angle for Silicon Valley’s Business
I think there are a few like Arista Networks, Facebook and Amazon. You might make 80k+ and spend 15k on housing and the general cost of living is still lower than SF. Just yesterday I meant some SF based founders come visit because of tax credit incentives, lower labour costs, COL, etc.
