jelling··on Patreon cuts deep inside creators’ pockets
TFW when white collar professionals complain about the prices businesses charge in order to pay the white collar salaries necessary to make the products they use. And so many of these companies aren't even profitable, either.

It's like carnivores being judgmental of hunters.

jelling··on Major crypto lender Celsius freezes withdrawals as markets tumble
Unfortunately, a lot of pension funds are behind so the started taking more risk. Frontline did a good piece called "The Pension Gamble" on this: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/the-pension-gamble/
jelling··on We're moving to a four-day work week at Beacon
The only thing I support more than WFH is my competitors working 20% less.

If they're doing this to compete for talent, go ahead by all means. I suspect they need to do something like this also because they're a UK SaaS company (so lower wages to start) serving the low-end of the non-profit market (price sensitive buyers). And they don't have the enterprise features to compete with Salesforce and CRM for the high-end segment.

jelling··on For Apple, WWDC 2022 is all about augmented reality
Maybe. I’ve been involved with ARKit and Google Glass dev and I’m expecting an Apple TV (the device) level of commitment.

The XR community seems to be expecting an sea-change but a lot of that energy seems to be coming from journalists and founders in the space.

jelling··on Norway to track all supermarket purchases?
You should consider reading “Seeing Like a State” for a history of how even well intentioned social engineering policies can go seriously off the rails.
jelling··on Coinbase is rescinding already-accepted job offers
It's part of most stock listing pages under "Insider Transactions". Here's one for Alphabet: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/GOOGL/insider-transactions/
jelling··on Email startup Superhuman lays off 22% of staff
At least for me, the forced onboarding call - at least until you ignore 5 scheduling emails - is also off putting. Do people with huge email flows really want another meeting? I don’t.
jelling··on Uber and Lyft’s new road: Fewer drivers, thrifty riders and jittery investors
Bingo. Andrew Chen, formerly of Uber, says exactly that in his excellent new book The Cold Start problem. The driver side is the hard side of the market and must be constantly tended.
jelling··on Unity's plan to migrate from Mono to .NET CoreCLR
Hopefully they also take time to upgrade their archaic forum software. Even a basic search is a terrible experience. For a company fighting for developer mindshare, it’s surprisingly bad.
jelling··on Shopify to Acquire Delivrr for $2.1B
Fun example: there is an issue with Amazon grocery search where it will tell you that they are out of a very common item, such as bananas, but when you check out it will suggest that you add bananas. You can also add the allegedly out of stock items by going to your previous items page. Just bizarre.
jelling··on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Source Code
If anyone is interested in working on a similar product, I've developed a product that is in private beta with users. Raise forthcoming. Developers are always needed but don't hesitate to reach out if you can help with growth or product.
jelling··on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Source Code
I'm working on something that intersects and have a private beta. If anyone is interested in this space, feel free to reach out. Right now I need another developer in addition to myself but will need some growth/product/ops help in the near future. Raise forthcoming.
jelling··on TX-6 – Teenage Engineering
The Yamaha DX7, the quintessential digital-replacing-analog synth, cost $2k USD in 1983, not $4-5k. I can't speak for what that cost in Euros (which didn't exist yet) or with import tariffs in an unspecified country. Today you can get one used for $500 USD. And while analog is and was more expensive, today you can get a Behringer Deep Mind 12 for $900 USD new and it sounds fantastic.

Meanwhile, Teenage Engineering is selling a tiny digital synth for $1,200, which has less functionality than iPad. I find it hard to take serious as anything other than a design object but YMMV.

jelling··on TX-6 – Teenage Engineering
Serious answer: expensive synths are the new expensive guitars. For the previous generation, guitar makers began cranking out premium priced guitars for purchase by people outside their prime music making years and into their prime earning years. Said guitars frequently just hung on the wall, which was fine because they were designed to be status items anyway.
jelling··on Ed Sheeran on creative cost of lawsuit: ‘Now I just film everything’
There's a giant difference between randomly hitting on the same melody as an existing massive hit AND then re-using that melody as the first hook in your own song. And Scrubs by TLC is a massive cross-generational hit that Sheeran can't claim not to know without making himself look like a tourist in the pop world.

Sheeran's lifting was so blatant I assumed he was intentionally quoting it. Doing that is fine - and it happens regularly, especially in rap and R&B - and is even encouraged when there is overlap in the publishing rights holders (label, publishing company) with the original writer. But royalties should and do follow. So I'm just baffled that he still thinks he is being taken advantage of here.

Fwiw, a much less fair copyright infringement case was the Tom Petty vs Sam Smith case around "Won't Back Down" and "Stay with Me." The musical similarity there was much smaller and there are likely scores of gospel songs that use a similar melody.

jelling··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
Would anyone else be interested in a modular hub / kvm system? Personally I’m tired of buying and replacing so many hubs, both because of new port requirements but also because they tend not to last.
jelling··on Ask HN: What is your recommended stack for real time chat?
I would go up one level of abstraction then and look at chat-as-service / embeddable chat SDKs. If it’s a niche service, it will be a good while at best before you break even writing your own.
jelling··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get for development?
I’m a Mac user that had to buy an XPS for a specific project. I got the latest 17” model and it died within 45 days due to a charging issue. Digging into it, I learned that my model was supposed to fix a charging issue in the previous model. So they’ve got QC issues for certain.

Also, getting service was nowhere near as nice as being able to go to a Mac store. Luckily, I could still return it so I did and just moved on.

jelling··on Ask HN: How do you meet other remote developers?
Discord. Join the Discords for everything you use. You will meet people.
jelling··on The new silent majority: People who don't tweet
> 3. If you hold any position that's even accidentally politically incorrect, you will be publicly shamed for it, and some people are quite relentless at bringing up tiny past mistakes.

A friend got disinvited from speaking at an NLP convention, not because of something he said or did, but because his employer was tangentially related to national security contracts. Of course, the person that organized the dis-invite also used it as an opportunity to get themselves ahead.

jelling··on Red Hat is discontinuing sales and services in Russia and Belarus
Making people comply with moral values they wouldn't otherwise comply with is the super-glue holding society together. One can wish all day long that someone like Putin would be a decent human being, but otherwise social and financial pressures are the only non-lethal option for dealing with him. This extends down to your neighborhood or office level criminal as well.
jelling··on Apple and Major League Baseball to Offer “Friday Night Baseball”
Pre-existing TV deals. For example, the rights to non-national NBA games are sold to LocalCableCompany SportsNet. On occasion, these games get promoted to one of that national rights holders (TNT, ESPN/ABC) so there's some mechanism for that in the contract. But the league is no doubt precluded from selling to the local cable channel and then undercutting them via their own website.

TL;DR - it's not a technical problem but a licensing problem that will solve itself once the contracts expire.

jelling··on Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman
And it causes a completely unnecessary versioning problem since the API client code lives separately and not even in a repo typically.

There’s a VSCode extension that executes REST and GraphQL queries stored in a plain text file. So much simpler and more secure. I forget the name - maybe REST client?

jelling··on The dangers of high status, low wage jobs
The journalists with access to political power are in D.C. The cultural and business journalists are in New York and the entertainment "journalists" are in Hollywood. All speaking in the main, of course.

I moved to NYC from Chicago, no cow-town, and there was a massive increase in the number of cultural journalists and writers I meet.

jelling··on Phenethylamines I have feared and loathed (2020)

jelling··on North Korea hacked him, so he took down its internet
> “I want them to understand that if you come at us, it means some of your infrastructure is going down for a while.”

Doing that is one thing, and certainly won't increase your personal safety. Doing that and telling the western press to embarrass them is insanely stupid. Kim Jong-un is widely believed to have ordered the assassination of his half-brother. And you want to threaten the infrastructure of his country? Talk about a keyboard warrior.

PBS Frontline's special on the assassination:

jelling··on Heroku Is Down
Yes. Pipelines is the new killer feature; super easy dev ops with review apps.
jelling··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
Ehh...I get why tech people are suspect of Palantir but they're just disrupting other government contractors.

And from my limited experience working with the government, they absolutely need / want / rely on having companies hold their hand as they insist on doing things the hard, slow, and very custom way.

jelling··on FalsiScan: Make it look like a PDF has been hand signed and scanned
Yup, there was a literal act of congress that made e-signatures legally valid but it's not worth arguing with anyone who asks for an "ink" signature ime.
jelling··on Chicago’s “Race-Neutral” Traffic Cameras Ticket Black and Latino Drivers Most
Former Chicago resident here: the variable they need to control for is average speed along the routes with red lights. Because 1) Chicago is one of the most segregated cities in America and 2) the street traffic on the predominantly white Northside was pretty terrible. Picture 2 - 4 lane streets that are backed up such that it’s hard to ever get up to speed.

Meanwhile, the main roads on the South and West side are much more open. So it’s much easier to get up to speed and try to make the light.

I like ProPublica but this isn’t up to their usual standard of analysis.
