jefozabuss··on VanJS (Vanilla JavaScript): smallest reactive UI framework
We probably saw since React came up at least 20-30 of these "smallest reactive UI frameworks" with similar API but none of them named itself "Vanilla" for a reason.

I share the opinions of others in this thread that the current name is an unlucky one.

jefozabuss··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W23) – a new kind of design tool
Hey, some feedback from Desktop MacOS Chrome:

- When you use CMD key the active component loses the selection (visually) this is a bit confusing, e.g. I used CMD+D and seemingly nothing happened as the selection was lost for a while and the duplicated element was just put above the original element

- When duplicating an element you could maybe shift the clone's position with a small amount so the user can see it has been duplicated (e.g. top +20px left +20px)

- I think it needs a list/modal to see the components created (like the list in PS layers/Figma etc) so you can see what you have in your workspace (it will also kind of help with the duplication related problem above)

- I scrolled via trackpad by accident (in the left column area) and I could not get back to the area I was working with, I realized it will snap back after I resize the area (with the vertical line between the two columns or with browser resize) but I think it should also have a reset view button or similar to let the user do the same as it is not obvious

- Maybe it's a ChakraUI menu z-index bug but after opening the Project/Share menu you can open View/Export/Account menus in 1x click and access the tools on the left but only from starting from those 2 menus, if you start with View/Export/Account menus you need 2x clicks to close them and open the other ones next to them, the Project menu is seemingly outside of the latter problem.

There is a lot going on the back-end of these big streaming sites and also they have "support over 25 languages, in order to provide 24/7/365" so I'd guess it's in the thousand+ range.
jefozabuss··on Visitor accidentally shatters Jeff Koons 'balloon dog' sculpture
If they offered the same or double the price I would be still raising my eyebrows a bit but 15M lmao, how blatant is that.

"It won't be blocked" = they imported the stealth plugin most likely
jefozabuss··on Ask HN: I’m falling out of love with coding
Unreal engine is pretty fun, I like the ease of adding models and physics by mouse without writing complex collision detection logics.
jefozabuss··on Alpine.js
I agree with this, we managed to sometimes create SPAs faster even though we had to duplicate template/initial page logic on the server side for each page in case of direct link/page refresh. Nowadays sometimes figuring out which prop you misused from a 3rd party component based on a 100 lines TS error takes more time than the actual coding.
jefozabuss··on Alpine.js
I had the same feeling with Vue2-3 a while ago, I'd say Svelte is relatively similar in feelgood as both eliminate a lot of annoyances to create "leaner" components compared to React.
jefozabuss··on Binance is fucked
Crypto is basically gambling, don't put in more money that you cannot afford to lose.

jefozabuss··on Show HN: I made a pretty relaxing puzzle game
Epilepsy warning: if you finish it you might have a page refresh bug where it constantly keeps refreshing (with flashing content) the page - for me it was solved by clearing localStorage (or just close the page I guess), I think this bug needs to be fixed ASAP.
jefozabuss··on Ask HN: Would You Work for Elon?
No, since I value my mental health better than to walk on eggshells all day with whatever I do being afraid for my job security and take a quick trip to burning out due to overworking myself.
jefozabuss··on The positive effect of walking on creative thinking (2014) [pdf]
This is how it's (in theory?) more effective to learn new languages using flashcards with a photo attached to text, I guess your brain can associate the information with visual input and somehow can store it better?
jefozabuss··on Tell HN: I was tired of being a perfectionist so I built an app within 24 hours
A full scroll through is downloading 135MB+ currently, even though it's a quickly made site it's super wasteful imo. The suggested preview gifs (and loading on click) could be a major improvement.
jefozabuss··on GitHub Copilot, with “public code” blocked, emits my copyrighted code
Daily reminder to not use copilot with sensitive codebases. (Or at all but you might like automatic code completions so you do you)
jefozabuss··on React PDF Viewer
DevDependencies are not installed when you use —production flag at npm install (saving space and time here when you include this package) they are only used for releasing the package versions in this case I assume.
jefozabuss··on Hg Init: A Mercurial Tutorial
I still save changes to a file if I switch/merge while having a bigger changeset as I use PHPStorm and it caused me a semi heart attack at least 3 times with the “unstashing failed“ error (that also removed it from the stash at the same time)
jefozabuss··on An interactive mechanical contraption in pure CSS
While this is pretty nice the title is incorrect (as others mentioned because of the sprite images).
jefozabuss··on Do kwon sent $80M a month to secret wallets?
The only surprising thing around this situation is that Jake Paul didn't promote it right before the crash.
jefozabuss··on We rendered a million web pages to find out what makes the web slow
From what I see it wasn't "ripped off" if the original author submitted it to both places (see at bottom) https://medium.com/@larseidnes

Or am I missing something?

jefozabuss··on Hello World
This example is not too relevant because the overhead is probably the additional tools (e.g. debug, error handlers, etc), there should be multiple examples for a normal comparison, e.g. 3-4 examples of more and more advanced code since then maybe these numbers would increase in a similar fashion.
jefozabuss··on New Features in ES2019
First thing I thought about was runtime monkeypatching - while this could be done via simple string replacement during build time (via webpack/rollup etc plugins) now you will be able to do it runtime as well.

jefozabuss··on Show HN: A Senior Engineer's CheckList
Manager = CTO/CEO

peers = peers

projects = you’d have at least one (and smaller additions to the product that could be projects in their own) hiring = you could be involved in the hiring process even though probably the CTO will handle it

mentoring = you can mentor others or get nentored by e.g the CTO

... etc

so where is that 95%?

jefozabuss··on World of Warcraft Classic Relase
I think the magic is mostly that everyone can start fresh again without the added clutter from the many expansions and without a lot of things handed on a silver platter for the user, also since the leveling process is slower the user might feel more accomplished when they hit the end game.

I wonder if adding a diablo like ladder type system where everyone starts fresh periodically (see Path of Exile leagues) make game a lot more addictive.

jefozabuss··on REST and GraphQL framework to build API-driven projects
Started using it (Laravel) for a new project recently, looks pretty handy so far (lots of forms and validation).
jefozabuss··on Show HN: Material Kit – Open Source UI for Bootstrap, React, Vuejs, React Native
The React version of this Kit is built on top of MUI so I'm kind of confused about this comment.
jefozabuss··on Evergreen: a React UI Framework built by Segment
Seems like under the hood it uses blueprint for Icon, checked if they have a similar issue as blueprint with icons (no tree shaking) and yep:

jefozabuss··on Show HN: Thi.ng/hdom – S-expression based, pure ES6 UI/VDOM components
I found a similar issue with the git commit log example (when filtering from initial state and clearing filter) - I guess it can be reproduced via a "heavier" example e.g. a couple hundred nodes with more frequent state changing.
jefozabuss··on Show HN: Thi.ng/hdom – S-expression based, pure ES6 UI/VDOM components
FYI the "Mouse gesture analysis" example has performance issues after 300~ samples (e.g. keep drawing big circles continuously)
