jeffmk··on Bernie Sanders’s Tax Plan Would Test an Economic Hypothesis
Your taxes may go up, but the claim is that the amount your taxes go up will cost less than the healthcare premiums/out-of-pockets/copays/prescriptions/etc. you have to pay, thus the average individual's net cost for healthcare is lower.
jeffmk··on GTD sucks for creative work. Here’s an alternative system
I find that often my interest in projects waxes and wanes periodically, and seemingly randomly. I like the organizational ideas of GTD, specifically the getting the ideas out of your head and collecting them into a known place, and breaking down TODOs into components until they're not so large and abstract as to cause paralysis -- but I agree that they can still be overwhelming.

This article made me think of an idea of mitigating the former issue; that is, instead of have a huge list of "next steps" that can cause their own form of analysis paralysis when I'm feeling indecisive, even if they're small and easy, but instead have a mechanism to choose and display a single, randomly chosen item from the list of items.

If I'm not interested in that, I could skip to another one. Otherwise, it catches my fancy and I now have something concrete to work on, without wasting any effort trying to figure out what to do myself.

jeffmk··on Metabase: Why we picked Clojure
Yes. It's also a problem when you're deploying to, for example, EC2 instances that are too limited -- say a t2.tiny for proof-of-concept work -- to compile the Python lxml library.

That's after you figure out which 50 different *-dev libs you have to sudo apt-get install, in a tedious process of trial-and-error, ./configure, make, and error.

With Clojure this is a non-issue. lein will download what dependencies you need. And they're all already compiled into .jars. This is a benefit of the JVM infrastructure, but we're comparing Python here, so.

And of course you can upgrade the EC2 instance, but an annoying and time-consuming process, since you're not in control of the AWS account yourself, and the entire issue doesn't exist if you're using Clojure.

jeffmk··on Leaving the Mac App Store
Indeed, I actually have a ridiculous and frustrating ongoing problem, apparently insoluble, where no matter how many times I update an app that appears under "Updates Available", it will reappear after seemingly successfully updating.

So I've installed the identical copies of XCode, iMovie, The Unarchiver, etc., etc., over and over. Then entries with identical versions and release dates very shortly after reappear in the list.

This, on top of countless other frustrations (such as transferring my MBP from my home "battlestation" to offsite causing full system crashes about 1/3 of the time, Time Machine not working properly with my NAS setup, WiFi overheating/malfunctioning FUBAR right after upgrading to Yostemite, various other minor random things breaking and annoyances, and so on, including the generally arrogant attitude Apple takes of its customers and developers), I've had enough. Next computer I'm running back into the arms of Linux, because the main argument against it is that Linux eats up a lot of time configuring, but I'm already wasting way too much time dealing with my OS' issues, one that ostensibly "just works", so I might as well get the benefit of having a working, productive development system at the end of it.

jeffmk··on Switching from OS X to FreeBSD – Both Desktop and Laptop
What model Dell laptop are you using?
jeffmk··on Why I Left the .NET Framework (2013)
Serious question: what function features do you think Python's missing, that C# has (other than the lambda point)?

Python indeed supports some functional paradigms:

- functions are first-class citizens

- list and dict comprehensions, generators

- map, filter, reduce, etc. for data pipelining (though these specific idioms are/were contentious [1])

- lambda for anonymous functions, though it indeed has limitations compared to other languages

- other useful functionality in stdlib such as the functools, itertools, and operators modules

- some built in immutable data types, such as str (strings), bytes (byte-strings), tuples, frozensets

You can read more here: https://docs.python.org/3/howto/functional.html

jeffmk··on Why Fogbugz lost to Jira
Love Trello. I'd like a locally installable version of that integrated with something like Gitlab (maybe this already exists, I haven't bothered to look).

It always seemed a bit slow to me as well. The dependencies issue may be fixed with modern usage of rvm-/rbenv-type things, but I haven't messed with Redmine for a couple years. It's funny you mention the pace of development too; the community actually forked at once point [1], I believe due to frustration with how the development community was being handled. That fork is dead now though.

jeffmk··on Why Fogbugz lost to Jira
Has anyone had experience with Redmine [1]? It's quite easy to use and extend via its plugin system, but I don't see many people who have encountered it in the wild.

I think its horrendous out-of-the-box look-and-feel detract heavily from its appeal. Nowadays I'd probably lean toward Gitlab, which seems to offer much of the same but appears much more modern.

jeffmk··on How does the iPhone 6s camera compare to other iPhone generations?
True in general but I disagree on specifics and magnitude. While those -- and other factors, such as exposure -- are limiting factors, and very important, THE primary limiting factor, for me -- who has used multiple dSLRs, POSes, and Androids- and iPhones-as-cameras -- and I suspect many others, has been one thing: time-to-capture.

The time it takes between me pressing the shutter button until the camera records the shot as usable data -- this is the important factor. This is what is holding phones back. On phones, I have to wait sometimes up to 0.25-0.5 seconds or even infuriatingly more between the time when I tap the software "capture" reticle and it records the image. This is what is unacceptable in modern phone cameras. By that time the cat has moved, the play is over, my hand has shaken.

On dSLRs this is refreshingly fast. I half-press to focus, complete-press and now I have the image, nearly instantly from a human perception of time, even given the mechanical slowness of the mirror movement. I know the limiting factor is for all practical purposes my own reflexes. For the phone, I know it's crap hardware/software.

SEEKING WORK - Remote or Near Chicago/Indianapolis

Looking for short- to medium-term contracts (1 day to 3 months) that are ready to ramp up within the next few weeks.

I'm a full-stack developer with over a decade of programming experience. My primary platforms have been Python/Flask, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, C#/.NET, PHP, and C++. In my spare time I program with Clojure and Python, and I would love to use these technologies specifically.

I can handle most roles but am most efficient on the backend, with a sprinkling of supplemental UI/UX development. I've spent time in finance, GIS/mapping, and telecom, and have worked on project-based contracts and as a freelancer for startups, mid-sized companies, non-profits, and universities, both on-site and remotely.

jeffmk··on Microsoft Band
Somewhat tangental to the actual story here, but is there some way to make something like Microsoft Band, Fitbit, Jawbone Up, or Nike+ FuelBand self-contained to your own server?

I'd love to use one of these devices, but I abhor the idea of my very personal movement/biometric data to be in the hands of a third party. If this data could be contained to my own server, I'd be all over it.

jeffmk··on Kissing Your Socks Goodbye
Completely agreed. I picked up a Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 [1] a few years ago and got rid of probably a foot stack of paper in total. It works wonders at eliminating that existential hopelessness too much clutter sometimes brings.

[1] The scanner works very well on linux and OS X, and has had very few jams no matter what I throw at it. http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-ScanSnap-Instant-Sheet-Fed-Sca...

jeffmk··on Apple Says It Will Add New iCloud Security Measures After Celebrity Hack
I hate them as well. I use KeePassX to generate a random 20+ character alphanumeric "answer" to them, and input the question and answer in the entry comment field.
jeffmk··on The world's hardest CAPTCHA
I'm not sure how it can't be construed as a joke given the poor accuracy of the CAPTCHA "paint" app and the fact that if you fail the first ridiculously complicated image, you are greeted with this image as the second CAPTCHA to replicate: http://www.geee.net/acids/cntpaint.gif

Granted, maybe they just have humor on the Contact Form (they also say "Your message has been sent to the Prime Minister who will be making some more cuts shortly." when you fail both CAPTCHAs), I haven't read the writings you're referencing.

jeffmk··on Ultima IV
As someone who's never played this series, can you give more detail about what this means?
jeffmk··on ZFS Gotchas
I don't know what your budget is, but I found that the ASRock E3C226D2I Mini ITX "Server Motherboard" fit my needs well. Being an LGA 1150 board, it seems to support the i7-4770k CPU you mentioned and is about $100 more than your comparable setup.

It has 2 USB 3.0 ports, supports up to 16GiB of RAM, and has 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports, so I think it would also work well for a workstation board, if you added a video/audio card -- HDMI out is the only glaring omission for a workstation.

I'm using it in my FreeNAS fileserver and have been happy with it.

jeffmk··on ProgressJS – A themable HTML5 progress-bar library
Looks great.

What browsers does this officially support? I don't see it explicitly referenced anywhere (other than some IE references in the source).
