jeffhuys··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
No internet here, but I'm setting up Meshtastic nodes between me and my family so we can keep messaging when internet stops working, or power goes out (solar panels).

They'll get 99.99% of people, but not me. I only need it for an hour or so to communicate meeting points. After that it's an added luxury for whatever comes after. It's my contribution to the prepping of my family.

jeffhuys··on Peer-to-peer file transfers in the browser
It's okay - 99% of the video files I download have to be opened in VLC, though :/

But still, being able to almost immediately stream, even if through VLC, is pretty nice.

jeffhuys··on 'Uber for nurses' exposes 86K+ medical records, PII via open S3 bucket
> S3 buckets should be private and encrypted by default and devs should need to actively choose to switch those things off

Yeah, that's the case right now. There's multiple screens you have to go to, that almost scream at you that you're making EVERYTHING PUBLIC. Also, in the overview, it distinctly says "!! PUBLIC".

jeffhuys··on It is as if you were on your phone
Goes to show; you can check every box and try so hard, but still fail and lose lots of people on screen 1.

> I think if we could improve our ability to easily & precisely communicate arguments, that would be huge for humanity's ability to deal with problems.

I've been thinking the same thing, and also started working on it in the past. Whenever I voiced this (like here) others came to me saying they also thought of it as at LEAST a part of "the solution". You seem to actually have something going here!

I'll take a look at your three links, a first look at [1] gives me goosebumps, you have no idea how happy I am that I'm not the only one that still has this top-of-mind, especially nowadays, no matter what side you lean towards.

I can't really find the words to convey my elation here, so you'll have to do with a simple "wow, thank you!".

jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
It's interesting to me that there's such a big difference between our experiences, even though the bug we find is the same. I'm running an M3 Pro 15.3 Sonoma. If you don't believe me I can provide a screen recording but from here yes, it's buggy, but it's such a small issue (milliseconds vs your seconds) that I'd give Apple a pass on this. But I get that you wouldn't!
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
That would've been a much better comment in the first place. I do understand where you're coming from, though. In my case, however, a single Brewfile is enough.
jeffhuys··on Apple M3 Ultra
Well there's a list of good reasons! Thanks for answering. I haven't had any problems with finding seeds, and no need for libtorrent but now I know how to fix that when I do encounter those situations.

Climate denier is a bit harsh - I tend to ask questions people don't want answered, and then get thrown into that camp, true.

Let me be clear: the climate IS changing, I just doubt that it's mostly caused, or potentially solved by, human behavior.

It's a great way to sell some solar panels, though.

EDIT: also, let me be clear (because I know how your brain works): I love that we're getting cleaner air. I love that we find alternative sources of energy. That's all amazing! But I predict there's never a "finish line". We'll never do good enough, and our kids will always die. Or our kids' kids. I'm not affected by that thought anymore.

I wish we could discuss this in a more professional manner. I might be informed by sources that contradict the sources you read. That doesn't mean I'm wrong, or you're wrong, but it would be nice to just discuss this as humans.

I do understand that this is a sensitive subject to some, so I apologize for any distress I seem to have caused.

jeffhuys··on Apple M3 Ultra
Really, really, really, really, really, REALLY REALLY slow.

I went to Transmission years and years ago because it's just simple. It has all the options if you need them, but no HUUUGE interface with RSS feeds, 10001 stats about your download, categories, tags, etc etc etc.

Transmission is just a small, floating window with your downloads. Click for more. It fits in the macOS vibe. But I'm a person that fully adopted the original macOS "way of working" - kicked the full-screen habit I had in windows and never felt better.

Can I ask, why would you go FROM Transmission to qBittorrent?

jeffhuys··on Apple M3 Ultra
Docker Desktop now offers an option to use the virtualization framework, and works pretty well. But you're still constantly running a VM because "docker is how devs work now right?". I agree with your comment.
jeffhuys··on Apple M3 Ultra
Do you understand that it's UNIFIED RAM, so it doubles as vRAM? I would love to know what computer you can build for <10k with 0.5TB of VRAM.
jeffhuys··on Apple M3 Ultra
Sure, but if you have models like DeepSeek - 400GB - that won't fit on a consumer card.

> we make the conditions worse for all species

That's your deduction. We should correlate the "dying" to other times in the last millions/billions of years where the temperature rose tis "quickly".

I really feel humans think they change way more than they do.

jeffhuys··on NASA Successfully Acquires GPS Signals on Moon
We WILL colonise Mars. You might think it's absurd, I don't. As we both have no real arguments besides "just look at it", we're both just as correct.
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
"I don't want solutions! I want to complain. Meh!"
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
There's an app for that.
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
Do you have a source for that? Because that's news to me...
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
Doesn't mean they want macOS to go away though. Merging code-bases is a bad thing now?
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
You need to have a color selected to begin with. This bug won't appear when switching from an image/dynamic to color. Only color selected -> close app -> reopen -> top right custom color. But even then, it's a MINOR thing, it doesn't stop me from selecting the right color at all...
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
Sigh. Seems like Reddit is leaking again.
jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
Can't reproduce. Second one this thread where someone had this error "for years" but I can't reproduce. Smells of a setting that's been migrated for years from an old version, as where I'm writing from is a clean macbook with a clean account (M3, about a year old now).

EDIT: can repro. But it's very important to note: you need to have a color selected already. So select a color with the + sign, close the app, open it, top right click custom color, and then the bug appears, although not like you describe: the color selection is easy, it jumps around for 20ms during dragging. If this is what we call "low quality" I'm happy to stay on Mac.

Might be a reason why it wasn't fixed if you didn't include that vital step in your repro.

jeffhuys··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
I can't reproduce the crash. Does it happen every time for you or only after a few times?

Makes me think of arguman[1] and kialo[2]. I discovered arguman maybe 10 years ago and have been thinking about it ever since. It's non-functional now but the source code is available. Maybe it's just my wishful thinking, but if we could map out every detail of an argument, maybe we could make progress faster, as a species. If this were incentivized well (like for instance polymarket), maybe with crypto rewards or something, this *could* take off.

[1] https://github.com/arguman/arguman.org - the website exists but is non-functional now

[2] https://www.kialo.com - feels like a dumbed-down version of arguman

Can't be more obvious.

How hard could it be to add "add a few grammatical and spelling mistakes. Use no emojis. Reply like someone on instagram" or something to the system prompt? I shouldn't give them ideas, but come on, that's low hanging fruit.
