jeffhuys··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
It's really simple to me:

- abortion should only be allowed if needed because of health or exceptional cases like rape - abortion should not be used as a form of birth control, use condoms or the morning-after pill

I'm fine with states deciding the details. I think it should be mandated that it's always allowed when health is in danger (I believe this is already true), and it should be mandated that even if a state allows abortion "just by choice" (so, as birth control), it should definitely not be allowed after 9 months even.

> The anti-abortion people do not care about actual outcomes.

I'm anti-abortion, but I really, really do care about outcomes. So if you want to discuss this with me, I'd love to.

-

> You get people who think life is so sacred abortion should be banned allied with people who'd like to see an AR-15 under every pillow

I don't understand the problem with this... Not wanting to kill unborn life but still wanting to be able to protect yourself and your family when someone breaks into your house.

It's statements like this that make me question the intellectual honesty of people. It doesn't take much thinking to understand it, right?

Yes, of course! By all means, update the law. I don’t think anyone misses that part of being a human. Any concept we think of is fabricated.

But here’s the real meat of the issue I guess, how far do we wanna go? At what point SHOULD something be un-copyrightable? What describes a certain “style”? My style is black&white, can I copyright that?

What would your diff be? :)

Of course it's impossible to prove, which is why so many people are doing it, like you/your team, at least recently. At some point in the past your blog seems to have gone from "real" to "slop".

I've seen enough LLM sh*t to know.

I know you'll never admit this. I don't care about that. But please understand that your credibility goes out of the window with this; it doesn't make it look more professional, especially to developers.

If I'm extremely wrong here, I genuinely apologize, but I would be very, very surprised.

jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
Last time, I promise: please, PLEASE don't use ChatGPT (or others) on us. It's _extremely_ obvious, and it takes away 90% of your credibility. I'd much rather read a bit of broken English than read this kind of slop. It's a huge reason why I can't take this seriously.

ALL your docs are chatgpt. All of them. All your issues. Your comments here. Are you even real? Yes? Then TALK to us.

/rant.

Here's the source, I believe: https://github.com/nuejs/nue/blob/master/packages/examples/s...

It does, and it muddies the waters a lot. Why does it read like a sales pitch?

> Where does the LLM get their opinions on “foreign affairs” from?

Yeah that's a big problem with LLMs at the moment - people are having an argument online, and one of them posts a piece of text from an LLM and says "see, Grok/ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini agrees! You're wrong!", which only reveals how much they did not do their homework and that they're arguing on the basis of hear-say, just like the LLM; the LLM has no mind of its own. If 90% of the internet says A, it will defend A to the death. What's not part of the equation is how much of that 90% has the same source, financed by a certain group.

We have a LOT of work to do soon.

jeffhuys··on Cross-Platform P2P Wi-Fi: How the EU Killed AWDL
Yeah, that's arrogance. I wish people were less simple-minded and throw everyone under a label; multiple times I've gotten the comment (irl) in the vein of "you actually know a lot about computers for an _apple user_". I always tell them that it's the reason I switched.

I'm not accusing you of being simple minded btw! It's just that most people are like that. Dumb people use windows. Dumb people use apple. Reality is more complex than "X = Y".

jeffhuys··on Cross-Platform P2P Wi-Fi: How the EU Killed AWDL
Right, I get the usefulness. Absolutely. But would you just randomly mock a person for not having a USB-C connection? They just saw my phone, I didn't even ask for a charger.

Besides, I always carry a collection of cables, even for those who mock me.

jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
Interesting that you think that I'm not aware of the difference, lol. Whatever.
jeffhuys··on The <select> element can now be customized with CSS
Yeah they are, which is IMO a good thing but it'd be better if you could link them somehow, maybe have a temporary session or something.
jeffhuys··on Everything is Ghibli
Well, it's a Pandora's Box. It's irreversible, so we as humanity should learn to cope with it. That's just reality. What's the alternative? Banning LLMs? Good luck because I have a few on my hard disk. And even if you make it illegal, how would you detect it? I could've used an LLM to write this comment, would you know?

I agree though that schools are even more in trouble now. But my point still stands: we have NO CHOICE. We must adapt, or Idiocracy awaits ;)

jeffhuys··on Everything is Ghibli
I believe you can't copyright a _style_ of art.

> no, you cannot copyright the Studio Ghibli art style itself. Copyright law doesn’t protect styles, techniques, or general aesthetics—like the hand-drawn, watercolor-inspired look with soft colors, detailed natural backgrounds, and whimsical vibes that Studio Ghibli is known for. It only protects specific, original works, like an individual film frame or character design from Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro.

And your answer... Doesn't seem to cover my question, I think. So the point of copyright is that the value of the style doesn't degrade?

jeffhuys··on Everything is Ghibli
If it has value to them, what do you care? Does the value in your mind of <artpiece> drop when somebody creates <artpiece 2 in the style of artpiece>? If so, you might benefit from focussing more on your own life. I mean this lovingly, as I myself am going through the same thing right now; I realize I'll never be happy if I stay grumpy like this. You can't protect the world from itself.
jeffhuys··on Everything is Ghibli
In someone's mind, you are part of the shallow mass.

You're just not shallow in the parts of reality that you care about.

Don't feel superior for you are not.

I'm sitting here for a few years already, happily using Safari as my main driver. Recently switched to Orion to get Safari + Chrome/FF plugins. Best combination.

Easy on the battery, freaking fast, low ram usage, and plugin support (ALSO on iOS, yes, uBlock on iOS). Screw firefox, screw chrome.

Yes, I also dev on Orion. The dev tools are fine.

It's interesting. I believe many of the people here know how it goes. There's no possibility of shrinking this further. It will only expand; we just have too much going on. We do have a genuine use for SPA, though - our webapp IS as complex a web-app can get, we offer no mobile version (for that, get the app).
jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
It's not just 2 MB of JS. I'm describing ALL traffic, also the JSONs received, CSS, images, everything.

Besides, we show many charts, and believe me when I say: financial people are PICKY when it comes to chart functionality. It needs to have EVERYTHING or you're not considered serious.

jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
Well, the post I replied to said "on a 10G connection peered within 5ms of the host" so I think it's fair to assume they also were in a sterile environment. I'm even on a lower connection with 20ms+ ping!
jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
You're solving a problem nobody has. If you encounter this problem, you shouldn't think "ah, let's yeet the JS engine because it clearly isn't good enough for my awesome SPA", you should think "hm, maybe I shouldn't render 10000000000 records in the DOM".

What's next? "Oh I have a memory leak, let's get a subscription on RAM modules and just keep adding them!"

jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
A Vite button? You mean Vue? Vite is just a bundler lol.

Also, would like to see some comparisons to Preact, as that's an (almost) drop-in replacement for React with SUPER small bundles. I'd be impressed if you manage to beat that.

jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
Now do macOS Safari......
jeffhuys··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
I get what you're trying to say, but aren't you blowing it a little out of proportion? At my job we have an SPA that loads a dashboard with 20+ widgets, all doing their own requests, transferring 2+ MB (compressed) of JS. It loads in two seconds, with all caches disabled. And I mean full load, not "ready for interaction". It runs on Vue 3.

I agree that the web could be lighter, but "finding one that will do a first load under 10s is close to impossible" sounds like exaggeration - it might not be due to the framework or lack thereof.

Btw, the webapp I'm describing is NOT built by the best of the best.

jeffhuys··on Cross-Platform P2P Wi-Fi: How the EU Killed AWDL
It wasn't really prevented, though, right? Apple was late to the game, yes, but that by definition means that its adoption was already well on its way; most of my non-Apple acquaintances were mocking me for having a non-usb-c phone (such an important issue!)...
jeffhuys··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
I used a lot of these, but actually stopped due to my text sometimes being called out as chatgpt output. I also thorw in the occasional spelling mistake. If a piece of text on reddit/x has "–" (not "-") in it, you can be 95% sure it's an LLM.

Not only confusion, but inability to just install on mac/linux, right? I believe both come with screen by default…

Edit: let me actually think a bit before commenting - it would probably just install, but then you run screen and you might or might not get your newly-installed software (so yeah confusion). Not a great first experience at worst
