jeffbarr··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
I thought I was the only one who had trouble with this. Based on the other replies here, that's definitely not the case.
jeffbarr··on AWS CloudShell
Thanks for being such a long-time reader!
jeffbarr··on AWS CloudShell
https://aws.amazon.com/cloudshell/ is the right link; I am updating the post now!
jeffbarr··on Model fits in a tweet and predicts all elections since 1960
This looks and smells like it was evolved by a genetic algorithm to produce those (and perhaps only those) results.
jeffbarr··on Pressing YubiKeys
Can you use UDDI or CORBA?
jeffbarr··on Studio Ghibli releases 400 free-to-use images
This was in the BSD C Shell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_shell) way back in the early 1980s!
jeffbarr··on Amazon Honeycode – build web and mobile apps without writing code
Thanks for listening to Polly! That's Polly's Matthew voice, there's not special preprocessing, and you can make your own text sound like that.
jeffbarr··on Amazon Honeycode – build web and mobile apps without writing code

jeffbarr··on Update to L.A.'s stay-at-home orders
How are things in Peru, COVID-19 wise?? That's my wife's home country and she's not heard a lot about how well (or not) things are going.
jeffbarr··on Now Open – AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region
> things like the ELB hosted zone identifier

If you file a ticket on the proper page, I am sure that my colleagues will fix it ASAP. Go to the page and click "Provide feedback."

jeffbarr··on AWS Ground Station
Per the Details page:

"You can connect with any satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO) operating in X-band and S-band frequencies, including: S-band uplink and downlink, X-band narrowband and wideband downlink."

jeffbarr··on AWS Ground Station
Yes it was: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/aws-ground-station-ready-to...
jeffbarr··on Lego ISS
There are some really good fan-created plans for LUTs, including a spectacular 8000-piece one by Nathan Readioff. PM me for pix and other info.
jeffbarr··on Abstreet: Traffic simulation game written in Rust
Seconded!

I would also like to see some pedestrian bridges or tunnels that would allow walking commuters like me to cross our major streets (Mercer, Denny, Westlake, and Dexters) at any time. This, I strongly believe, could reduce traffic, make residential neighborhoods effectively closer to commercial areas (due to reduced walking time), and improve both vehicle and pedestrian safety. Bridges should be far less expensive than roads, and could be built very quickly.

jeffbarr··on AWS Is Now Available from a Local Zone in Los Angeles
You are correct!
jeffbarr··on AWS Data Exchange
Sorry to let you down.
jeffbarr··on Amazon’s Consumer Business Turned Off Final Oracle Database
That was the actual shutdown. I was there, it was not rehearsed, and there were no retakes.
jeffbarr··on Amazon’s Consumer Business Turned Off Final Oracle Database
There is no departure fee. As others have pointed out, this is simply data transfer.
jeffbarr··on AWS' Sponsorship of the Rust Project
I've never heard that folklore, and the Ruby team is more than welcome to apply for support.
jeffbarr··on The 2002 mandate for internal communication systems at Amazon
I strongly believe that Steve was exaggerating for effect here. In my 17 years at Amazon I have never seen or heard of a threat of this nature. The overall intent of the email was to tell teams to decouple, decentralize, and to own their own destinies.
jeffbarr··on Amazon S3 Path Deprecation Plan – The Rest of the Story
You are correct; thanks for spotting this! All fixed.
jeffbarr··on Amazon S3 Path Deprecation Plan – The Rest of the Story
You are welcome. And now, back to my stay-cation.
jeffbarr··on The Next Generation (I3en) of I/O-Optimized EC2 Instances
I am supposedly on a stay-cation this week. I'll ask the team to check this thread.
jeffbarr··on AWS Asia Pacific – Hong Kong Region
No, we already have AWS Regions in Beijing and Ningxia. Each region includes multiple Availability Zones (AZs).
jeffbarr··on Please Don't Say Just Hello In Chat (2013)
This works for me! Far too many IMs seem to go like this:

Them: Hey Jeff ... Them: Can I ask you a quick question ...... Them: I am sure that you are really really busy with re:Invent ......... Them: And I could look this up, but you have been here forever and I figured you would know .................. Them: Where can I find X?

I am happy to help, but would prefer:

Them: Hey Jeff, hope all is well. Where can I find X?

jeffbarr··on Open Distro for Elasticsearch
Thanks for sharing; I wrote the post and also submitted the distro to HN. In most cases (apparently per HN policy), blog posts that announce new services are removed in favor of direct links to the offering.
jeffbarr··on Experts cracked laptop of crypto CEO who died with $137M, but the money was gone
Works every time!
jeffbarr··on Jeff Bezos at YC Startup School 2008 [video]
Jeff's original request for S3 was, as I recall, along the lines of "We need malloc() for the Internet."
jeffbarr··on AWS Ground Station – Ingest and Process Data from Orbiting Satellites
No sharks were jumped in the making of this service or blog post.
jeffbarr··on Amazon S3 Block Public Access: Protection for Your Accounts and Buckets
This is great feedback, and I appreciate your taking the time to write it up.

I definitely try to do this in my blog posts, but I do assume that my readers have been following along for some time, and that they have internalized some of names.

As you noticed, I like to use the full ("formal") name at the start of each post, and then switch to the informal name after that. In fact, I have a shortcode system that makes this fairly easy. The first reference spells out the entire name and is linked; the others use a short name and are not linked.
